dude, there is no way that thing ever did 85, I ran one for many years (had a speedometer). You have achieved top speed and should be proud. If somebody told you it could do over 8000 rpm under load in 5th gear, it's a fib...unless your screamin down a hill at 77mph, and you know damn well it would be a freak show to ride that thing over 80:)

That could help a little, but that pipe is tuned for low end, not high end, so even if it's clean, it will only help the low end power. That bike will never do 80 mph, even when new. Top speed is about 60, if you're light enough, maybe 65 but I doubt it. Mine never went over 65, and it was new at the time.

Love your enthusiasm, and hell yes, clean up that trail. Who needs a track when you have that! Stage 2 reeds on my YZ250 made a huge difference, the crusty old ones may be creating a restriction. All of the other comments about 2 strokes being funny with the exhaust tuning are spot on. Even dents in the pipe will rob power. Keep it up man, this is one of my favorite channels.

In my experience, if a bike feels better at 3/4 throttle than at full throttle, it’s often that the main jet is a little too large. Yours sounds like it’s bogging down. Do a plug chop on a full throttle run and compare it to a plug chop at 3/4 throttle. Remember that modern petrol isn’t the same as ‘70’s petrol so the stock jet settings are just a starting point. I also remember from the 70’s that that the exhaust needed cleaning fairly regularly, and if yours is a bit clogged that would make the mixture rich at full throttle. Final points, make sure the needle, needle jet and spray tube are actually right for that carb. The parts interchange with similar looking 4 stroke ones which wouldn’t work well but who knows what the DPO may have tried in the past :)

Great series of vids. Check the exhaust is properly clean. A Two strokes power depends on the exhaust. Put air mix & jets back to factory settings. Clean and add 2 stroke oil to airfilter Check your oil pump settings (too much oil = too little fuel) Check your sprocket sizes are standard. If you still cannot reach 75+mph, take off the head & barrel. Check the condition of the piston now that you have been riding the bike. It may need a rebore. Remember, 75mph plus original speedo error is around 85mph... Thanks again for the vids I have enjoyed watching the TS come back to life.

Hi gold guy , I used to own a ts 125 and had same issue, if you’re exhaust is full of carbon you’ll have to replace it , a two stroke recycles unburnt fuel by the exhaust , an after market exhaust should do the trick, I used fresco exhausts . You should try talking the air filter off for a short run to see if it’s restricting it . Also you should go up from standard jet size 10 % with a pod filter or you’ll seize it on a long trip. You should change the reed valves also . And check your ignition system also . Hopefully this will help, love your videos by the way. Good luck.best regards, john Scott.

I never looked to see how fast I was going, I was just having so much fun driving fast. One night as I had my head down on the bars, I saw lights swirling in front of me on the road. I got off the handle bars & looked in the rear view mirror, a sheriff was right behind me. I pulled over, got off the bike, took my helmet off... he said..."what are you doing... you where going over 90MPH... " I said, this bike can't go that fast, because I was told 75MPH was tops... the sheriff told me to shut up... one aspect of my fine was I couldn't drive my bike for a week.

Your air screw only works with the pilot which is from idle to 1/8th throttle. Needle position will change mid range but also make the main richer or leaner. Each circlip height makes up for about 7 main jet sizes so keep that in mind when you play with needle heights. Your bike will also make more power running slightly rich than slightly to lean if it's not tuned perfect either. There's no harm in running slightly rich where being to lean can cause bearings to fail and your piston to seize, more so if it's pre mix. You should cook all the carbon out of the exhaust and silencer as others have said. If your silencer is the type to have baffle packing you will loose low end and mid range power without any. Good luck with tuning it, looking forward to seeing it on more trails so clean them up!
@All-Sgood
@All-Sgood 5 жыл бұрын
Lol.. Running rich won't cause it to run hot nor will it cause a blockage. I said slightly rich is better than slightly to lean. At most it will get a bit of carbon build up, would take yrs to block an exhaust port even running far to rich. Guess you've never played with jets before? Excessive heat in a 2t is caused from being overly lean and a lack of lubrication

Oh and I forgot. I've ridden a Suzuki AX100, which is 100cc two stroke, and out of the box the thing was able to reach 60 mph. With a little taller gearing I managed to cruise at 65 mph 250 miles of a roadie. That thing should go a lot faster with taller gearing. No need to make it lean to the point where it is about to seize the engine for it to go fast. All you'll end up doing is sacrificing your acceleration (even more than with the taller gearing) and reliability for a couple extra mph. Now I believe there's another thing we might be overlooking here. Is the timing advance at spec? I believe all those "cheap" (alas great) bikes were not all set exactly the same in regards to ignition timing. That's why the discrepancy of the final speeds and power the same make and model can have on two different bikes. I'm eager to see a video on it as I'm about to get myself a TS185. What's your thoughts on the bike btw?

Sprocket size front and back make sure they are factory sizes.. make sure your exhaust is clear, you can check it by taking off your muffler at the end of your exhaust system and then go for a spin you will gain a few miles an hour, if it gains more than 5 mph its because your muffler is in need of cleaning. Also check your timing marks make sure they are aligned. If you put boysen reeds you will gain at least 15% more power, you should definitely feel a difference. the steel reeds that are factory hold it back for sure. If you don't have the money for reeds, then I just flip your existing reeds over. Performance reeds are what I put on my TS185. I'm hitting up to 77 or 78 mph. And make sure you tuck down, when going for top speed. Wind resistance will slow you down. Good luck keemosaby. My spelling is pathetic. My son has a 1980ts100 it does 65 it supposedly does a factory 69 mph. Get to work, never give up, walk away when frustrated and calm yourself, the get your ass back to work. You can do it Young man. Check the engine stamp may have 125 in there, maybe throttle slide is not fully rising, no slack in the cable. Remove exhaust and have a look in the exhaust port to see if coked up or restricted with a washer. Remover air cleaner, also check float bowl petrol height. Would check the timing on the ignition side with a strobe and the points gap. Are you getting 5 gears not just reving it out in 4 th check gearbox oil level as well. Last thing is ignition coil getting hot after a few minutes of running it could be on the way out.

Install a exhaust temp gauge so we can really tweak it. It doesn't get enough gas at top end because the exhaust pipe is restricted and the idle jet is very integral in top end shenanigans...the lack of torque at top end is how aluminum pistons melt. Wait until November when all the trail brush dies.

You can get an OKO carb for it for about $50 on eBay. You also need to change the gearing for 80mph. It will do it, but you need a much smaller rear sprocket

Thats about right for one of these,ignore the specs from factory,try removing head gasket for higher compression ,remove gasket tighten down head remove plug then kick it over to see if the piston doesn't hit the head,remove air filter and cover with an old stocking and lay down full throttle,should take you over 70,tyre size in height and weight effect top speed also.If she feels like it hits top speed quick and holds try one tooth bigger on the front sprocket.

I was around those type of bikes as a kid. I had a 125 Yamaha enduro. Mine topped out at about 55 or so. A 185 probably tops out at around 65 or so. It just isn't true that you are going to get 86 mph out of a bike like that. That's crazy. Your bike is running well. Just enjoy it. And the literature from the manufacturer is often wrong. The Japanese guy who wrote that was obviously drunk.

I had a 75 model TS185 in 1978.Fantastic bike.Top speed is about 75mph on the clock.My mates brand new TS250 would only reach about 80mph. Off road my 185 kicked the 250s butt though.lol. What made you think they were good for 86mph? I also had the GT185 twin road bike & that would reach 85 just about.

clean the pipe out by pouring gas in it and lighting it up. soot and whatever should pour out...ignition or maybe a bit too rich still, try testing by turning off the petcock while riding full throttle and see if the speed increases.

Hey G.G. Nice video. I think you a restrictive air flow when you give it full throttle. Maybe caused by you airfilter/airscrew. What is the color on the sparkplug after your trip? If it black it could be because you exhaust is to restrive. Hope you find the fault.

The Suzuki ER185 did 70 mph, in top gear the rpm matched the mph, it went up to 7000rpm, throttle wheelies in 3rd gear.

get a better gases flow with cleaning exhaust, maybe polish piston and head, grind down sharp edges between carburetter and cylinder, if there are some. Also you need to adjust ignition timing to get the best performance in high RPM.

I would try the next smaller size of main jet. Nothing to loose by doing that, eh? Wouldn´t Change sprockets to get faster on a trails bike, because this means loosing torque. Thumbs up and go on like you did. P.S.: I will try out the screw driver droping method. lol.

I had the first model out. Nice orange paint. looked great. ran great but. 59.9 miles per hour. Above that, it started to hack like it had a rev limiter. Friends liked mine, great bottom end tourque off road. Theirs were not as good on the bottom but easily did over 59.9 MPH. Got stuck behind a VW van and just about bought the farm. He would speed up on straights and slow down on corners. after 1/2 hour of this, I tried to pass. Semi coming toward us. Guess I made it but. Took it to dealer and they could do nothing. It's not carb, gotta be in the ignition.

When I was riding stuff around 35 yrs ago like this they were running on 2 and 3 star petrol , or as you call it gas, here in the uk 🇬🇧, which has a much higher octane as well as the petrol was leaded ,, so guess that would affect it ? Maybe cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

So many variables, i think Suzuki measured the top speed going down hill with the wind behind them!, i think 70 mph isn't far off. i think you need to find out what it's revving to first off, that'll give you some idea if it's reaching peak revs, is the gearing stock? me i'd fit the original air box and filter, put the jetting back to stock, strokes and pod filters don't mix well. bike looks great.
