I have owned a 2009 with AT AND 2.4 L petrol from brand new. Done 130ooo klm no real troubles. An annoying creaking noise in front suspension when going over gutter on right or left turns at very slow speed eg into my home driveway. No oil leaks anywhere.Runs very smoothly .Drivetrain is a bit clunky on deceleration at roughly 20-40 klm per hr coming up to an intersection. I must say 2.4 L is insufficient for weight of car to get excellent acceleration in an emergency but in everyday running is enough. eg if you are parked on side of a highway and want to get back on, you need a heap of time to accelerate hard to get to 100klm per hour so as not to be a danger to traffic coming up behind you.

I have one of the first 2005 models 2.0l in manual. Although basic transport been pretty good mechanically and I haven't been the best owner I admit. Now I'm taking better care of it as great character and I want to keep it as 2nd car. Current project is to replace air compress for A/C as it's getting tired. Then replace a suspected dying PCR valve as it's starting to smoke. I wore out the clutch at 140k kms it's now at 194k kms. I would have liked the 2.4 or the 3.2 v6 (rare) they are better engines partly designed by mazda.

2008 1.9L Turbo Diesel model. Oil leak between engine and gearbox. It feels like it needs an extra gear between 1st & 2nd, and being a diesel it is a bit less forgiving on the clutch and it will wear out faster. Around town it is quite unrefined and you need skill to overcome turbo lag while in peak hour traffic. Inside is quite comfortable for passengers. I am 6'4" and fit in the drivers seat OK leg room is liveable not great, I am not able to straighten my legs all the way but very few 4x4's will allow that anyway. Off-road it is VERY good. It talks back to you saying that this is what it was designed for. Took it out to high country in VIC in mud and snow up and down hills as steep as you like the diesel engine never struggled. Excellent turning circles doing an about-face on a narrow track was never a problem. It kept up with Defenders and Jeeps it was only limited by wheel clearance in what it could do and ofcourse that meant picking wheel placement more carefully than them. It received compliments on how quickly it was able to move, the others like to move quickly and had their reservations at first but in the end were delighted that "the little Vitara" was able to keep pace. It feels really good doing all the rough tracks, i dont know how much better it would be with a lift kit or if I should just get something else. It is quite good on fuel, consistently 8.6L per 100km. It is not the cheapest thing to repair. Don't buy one that was pulling large loads regularly. It's rated at 2 tonnes breaked but the transmission will need to be rebuilt.

@@wens999 The "lag" or lack of power going into second is generally injectors - they do clog once the miles have accumulated. However they are easy enough to un-clog & clean ultrasonically. Once given a clean, the 1.9's are generally transformed - better economy, loads more poke & no more lag.

Once I was driving a 2.0 2008 petrol model for a week WITHOUT motor oil and the strange noise made me go for a check. After adding oil to the motor, the car was again the same as before with no appreciable damage done. Perfect sound, perfect behaviour. It has been a year after this incident and 0 problems. Tell me another car that can resist a week without motor oil without having major motor damage. That for me is the best way to explain what a Grand Vitara 2008 made in Japan is: an excelent motor and parts material: 90% of your money is invested in the real car behind what you see and touch. Cheap car with expensive motor and steel parts.

Have a 2007 2.0 Petrol AT which I have owned since new. Have never had any issues in the past 15 years with it except having to change an electric valve for gearbox once at when the car was 12 y/o ($500). other than that, its been just having its oil and filters changed. one advice specially for anyone with small engines is to change the oils every 5000 miles or less. the engines run a lot in their high rpm due to small size and changing oil frequently really expands their life cycle.

2.7l v6 Vitaras have an issue on the trannys where the rear seal leaks out at the input shaftx you drop out all the oil and the tranny dies, happened to me, it's a design flaw, to replace that seal, you have to take the whole transmission apart! You have to disassemble the whole Front of the engine to get it off as it is under the timing chain cover. The new one started to leak a couple of years later. So I have just completed a 3,900km trip over four months, mainly off road in New Zealands South Island. I have a 2"lift and running 16" steel wheels with Falken Wildpeak AT3's. The little Zuk went amazing. We took the back seats out so we could sleep in the back, mainly on top of mountains or at remote lakes and rivers. We could go 90% of the places the bigger rigs could go. The only thing that stopped me was the deeper wheel ruts that the 35" tyres on the bigger rigs would cut into the track. I reckon we went 90% of the places for 1/5th of the price. The Zuk gave me no troubles the entire time.
