Suzuki first launched the Vitara in 1988 and since then have been leaders in the field of compact SUV's. As this sector of the market booms, it is essential for every manufacturer to ensure that they have models to cover the market.
In SA, the Suzuki Crossover/SUV range starts with the little Ignis and, until now, there was a large gap to the popular Vitara models and then the Grand Vitara at the top of the tree.
The new Vitara Brezza fills the gap absolutely perfectly, both in size and in price range so now gives Suzuki SA an ideal range in this segment.
The Vitara Brezza may be a bit smaller than the Vitara but has many styling cues that immediately identify it as being part of the same range.
Available with a 1.5l 4 cylinder petrol engine providing 77kW and 138Nm to the front wheels through a 5 speed manual gearbox. (A 4 speed automatic option is available). As expected from Suzuki, fuel consumption is always a strength and we averaged 6.8l/ 100km in mixed driving for the test period.
On the road, the engine is zippy and buzzy in the typical Suzuki fashion and all controls being typically light and easy in everyday use. Freeway cruising is smooth and comfortable but there were occasions when I wished that the gearbox provided a 6th ratio. This would make long trips that much more relaxing at lower revs.
Ride and roadholding are typical of a smaller SUV and although I did not venture offroad, the 200mm ground clearance is a boon in these conditions.
Where Suzuki SA have really gone all out is with the specification levels. Available as a GL or GLX as tested, the lists are long. Both models include touchscreen infotainment screen with reverse camera, daytime running lights, 2 airbags, Isofix fittings. GLX adds items like 16 inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry and start and even a cooled glovebox.
The test model is currently priced at R289 900 with the range starting from R244 900. All models offer a 4 year/ 60 000km service plan and 5 year/ 200 000km warranty.

I think you can change the instrument cluster to show l/100. On the Swift you can change it. Just hold in the left button and turn the right button to the right and then it will change it to L/100 :)
