In the manga, when L dies and sees Light smiling, he says "I knew it, I wasn't wrong..." in his mind right before he dies. L always seemed to die without struggling. I believe L knew he was going to die since he was acting extra odd in this episode. He also knows that because he says "We'll be parting ways." That line was so damn powerful, he even dies peacefully without struggling. It's somewhat hard to blame Rem since shinigami almost never feeling emotions towards any human, and she loved Misa. It took me a few weeks to continue the series after episode 25. I miss L so much.

I'm someone who does not believe in that reasoning, and imagine that light's true personality is what allowed him to be corrupted by power, not the other way around.
