I hated what Stannis did here from a writing perspective. Spoilers ahead btw… He’d been so unconditionally loving to Shireen, her face is living proof of how far Stannis will go to keep her safe and yet he burns her to death because Melisandre sort of told him to so he could somehow win a war. In fact it would be more interesting to actually have him win the war because of that the same way it’s implied the burned leeches killed Joffrey, Robb and Balon, like if he could live with himself after winning after murdering his daughter to do it. In the books he just leaves Shireen with a few of his men at one of the Night’s Watch outposts. And in fact in the books, Ramsay just lied to Jon in writing, saying Stannis was defeated, when in reality, Stannis is competently leading his men in war and is still well!
@monkeyman1350 Жыл бұрын
It's not bad writing IMO because it shows how convincing and tempting Melisandre's magic is. Turned a guy as good hearted and noble as Stannis into a total POS.
@The_Story_Of_Us Жыл бұрын
@@monkeyman1350 I just don’t really buy that as sufficient justification to do something this extreme of a character turn
@catherinemckeown2746 Жыл бұрын
@THE STORY OF US I don't really think it's that much of a character turn. Stannis has always focused on "his duty" to be king and he needs to regain the North as part of it. Also he is in a desperate situation, one he's faced before. When Davos smuggled in his onions during Roberts rebellion Stannis had been under siege for months. Everyone was starving, eating rats etc some men became cannibals. I'm sure facing that kind of hunger again is also part of his fear and despair.
@The_Story_Of_Us Жыл бұрын
@@catherinemckeown2746 never once hurt Shireen for it though. And the fact that Shireen and Stannis are still alive in the books, with Stannis not even bringing Shireen on his dangerous warpath I think makes it clear this was just an example of D&D not knowing what to do with a bunch of characters. As another example, Mance is still alive in the books, here Stannis burns him alive in front of his own people as if that’ll somehow make them join his ranks as punishment for respectfully not bending the knee. Based off predictions by Melisandre that were literally just wrong… Sacrifices everything, gains literally NOTHING. It’s narratively unsatisfying is what it is. Things like the Red Wedding are satisfying because everyone dies due to choices that are noble and admirable. Ned dies because of a pigheaded adherence to honorable values when he shouldn’t have, Robb dies because he marries someone he actually loves when he shouldn’t have. Stannis dies because he burns his daughter (the person he loves most in the whole world) alive. Like it’s literally because of that. Half his men abandon him. If he hadn’t burned her alive (like he didn’t do in the books), he’d still be alive. It’s too much for not enough. He literally does it because the northern weather is bothering him. What did you expect, it’s the North! Tough it out another day, make some fires and don’t murder your own daughter in front off all your men… It’s not that it doesn’t make sense on some level, it’s that it doesn’t make enough sense and isn’t powerful enough to warrant it, the means are awful and the ends are awful.
@jackthehat1093 Жыл бұрын
From a writing perspective it's perfectly consistent. Stannis values duty above all else. He's already seen the power of the red god and he believes it's his destiny to defeat the white walkers.

GRRM has himself confirmed Stannis burns Shireen but please keep lying and be in denial. Its funny Latest confirmation was from the book, James Hibberd's book Fire Cannot Kill A Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series, DIRECT QUOTE FROM GRRM "It wasn't easy for me. I didn't want to give away my books. It's not easy to talk about the end of my books. Every character has a different end. I told them who would be on the Iron Throne, and I told them some big twists like and Stannis's decision to burn his daughter. We didn't get to everybody by any means. Especially the minor characters, who may have very different endings." In fact all these have been foreshadowed right from Stannis's first chapter where he lets his foster father be mocked like a clown and killed in front of him without doing anything. He hid the secret from his brother the king. He killed his own brother. Mel has stated multiple times he will betray his family Exactly why i hate the Stannis online fandom. They are delusional weebo fan with daddy issues who least understand his character and want him to be some white knight who can do no wrong. When he is a Michevelian character who is tragic and will lose everything for the throner. What a pity
