I mean he did "see" or was manipulated into seeing his victory "in the flames". How do you doubt something that's right in front of you. He believes it is his sacred duty and divine right to become King of Westeros. In his mind he is sacrificing a few to save many, which is what society always tells us to do. In hindsight, if Sheeren’s death actually led to his victory and saved the North from Ramsey then we will all be saying “That sucks but at least it was worth it.” but now it’s “Stannis sucks and killed his daughter for nothing”. About the Baratheons brothers: Castelblack's blacksmith, Donal Noye, before being on night watch, was the blacksmith of Acalmie, the castel of the Baratheons. He knew very well the 3 Baratheons brothers, Robert, Stannis and Renly, during their childhood. And he once said to Jon Snow: - Robert is like true steel: Sharp and effective in battle, but he rusts if left hanging on the wall. - Renly is like copper, bright and shiny, pretty to loook at, but too malleable to use as a weapon, not worth all that much at the end of the day - Stannis is pure iron. Hard, and strong, yes, but brittle, the way iron gets. He'll break before he bends.... So is Stannis Stannis's story was here inspired by Agammemon's story from the Troy war. In the Greek mythology, Agamemnon had to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigénie to appease the wrath of Arthemis and provide favorable winds for the Greeks to sail through the Aegean Sea. In this ep, same story, Stannis is Agammemnon, and Rhollor is Artemis.

@@bill.godwin-austen thank you for these details. I couldn’t remember it all. Given that these Sons of Harpy have attacked Unsullied and killed people, it was idiotic that Tyrion or Daario didn’t suggest a larger Queen’s guard force around Dany until they got rid of the SoH. With an army of 8,000 unsullied, even if 3k were patrolling the city and 3k were resting, that leaves 2k available. She should have had at least 1k at the fighting pit, not 100-200

For me Shireen's burning scene was the most difficult scene to watch in the entire series. Not the Red Wedding, not Ned's death, but the screams of a child being burned. It was just too much for me. This was probably the reason I didn't enjoy season 5 as much as I could have.

Very realistic dialogs. If a parent has a son die during the sons military deployment, do they just have to just deal with it, because the son volunteered? Losing a loved one is losing a loved one, and seeking vengeance is profoundly reasonable. Illogical, maybe, but understandable.

That, the character assassination of Stannis, Sansa's marriage to Ramsey, and the exclusion of a certain "raised" character altogether is where the show's writing started veering way off course to the books. And why many consider this season the beginning of the end in quality. To be fair, there are many, many great moments, scenes and even episodes coming. But it all feels off overall. The Stannis one rubs most of all. I don't doubt that just may be Shireen's fate. But it won't be by him. She isn't even with him at this point in the story. Stannis wouldn't even agree to burn innocent men in similar circumstances. And he was very loyal to and loved his daughter. The last order we see of him so far in the books is that if he dies, "you will put my daughter, Shireen, on the throne, or die in the attempt." No way he ever agrees to that. He has many faults. This isn't one.

I really don't like the fighting pits scene. Not simply because it's a major departure from the books, but because it really shows how the show leaves the true way of the Westeros universe behind and becomes this high-budget fairy tale of good versus evil, of magical dragon deus ex machina, of cheap "EPIC" effect that wears off after the first watch as it does not provide any food for your brain. In the books the Sons of the Harpy never attack the fighting pits, it's the blood and the sheer violence of the fighting pits that attracts Drogon. Dany can't stand the violence of the fighting pits and politicially chained position she's in and in comes Drogon, killing and burning hundreds of people alive (including Dany, but she remains unscathed), Dany watches him and she realized that being the mother of dragons is what she is, not the mhysa of slaves and trying to politically outmaneuver the guerilla warfare of the Sons of the Harpy. Which is a lot less black and white than what they have in the show.

Stannis values duty above family, above the wellbeing of those he loves, etc. He has seen visions in the fire, he is convinced Melisandre is truthful, so he feels obligated to do his duty as Azor Ahai. I'ts also for his men, in his eyes if he doesn't comply with the Lord of Fire's wishes he believes his men will die and it's his responsibility to assure their victory, above his love for his daughter. It's really horrible, his own men despise him for this action, but the show is exploring what a man of that character would do in an extreme situation.

From the first time I saw it. I was heartbroken for my favorite character. Davos........a HUGE part of why hes my favorite is specifically his interactions with Princess Shireen. My favorite scene AND the one that put Davos on top for me. Is when Shireen sneaks in to see him in the dungeon and talks him into learning to read. When she dives into her very first lesson about the letters A. E. and G sounding like "egg". Davos just sits there with that loving smile and its clear he already loves her very much. If Melisandre is right (won't spoil either way) her excuse would be valid tbh. She believes Stannis is Azor Ahai, the chosen saviour of the world from the others (the White Walkers). He needs to win to live, and he needs to live for the world to be saved. That can only happen with the help of the Lord of Light. To get that help she needs to sacrifice King's Blood. There's only one option available to her in that regard and it's the kid. Sacrifice one child to save the world from the undead? Worth it. Only problem would be if her prophecy was interpreted wrong...

There are a lot of nasty and hateful characters in the series, but Stannis tops them all. Thanks to this chapter we understand that greatness is earned. It doesn't matter that Stannis is a good warrior, he will always live in the shadow of his brothers. Robert is remembered as a great warrior who made history, Renly was humble and kind, generating admiration with just his presence, while Stannis is just a greedy and infamous poor man impossible to respect.

Shireen's burning is such a good portrayal of extremism. People who were convinced so much they'd do anything and encourage those around them to do the same, only to get a wake-up-call when it's too late, and be forced by those around them.
