Pamir was the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn, in 1949. By 1957, she, one of the, famous Flying P-Liners, a four-masted barque built for the German shipping company F. Laeisz, had been outmoded by modern bulk carriers and could not operate at a profit. Her shipping consortium's inability to finance much-needed repairs or to recruit sufficient sail-trained officers caused severe technical difficulties. On 21 September 1957, she was caught in Hurricane Carrie and sank off the Azores, with only six survivors rescued after an extensive search.

The Passat was decommissioned in the same year after almost sinking in similar conditions, and is now (still) a museum ship in Lübeck.

I was a young child sometime in the late 1940s when along with thousands of other people I stood on the cliffs overlooking the Rangitoto Chanel watching the Parmir come up the Chanel under full sail headed for Auckland New Zealand. It was one of the most beautiful sights I ever saw. Not sure but I think it loaded wool for a trip to England. I remember that some tugs were in the Chanel probably to assist if needed but they couldn’t keep up with her. I’m glad I saw her we will never see the like of her again a bygone era.

I visited the Peking during her residence at the South Street Seaport in NYC. "Ploddy Erickson" was well known in shipping circles.

If the stories of old grain ships are true. I hate to think what would happen to the ship if you flooded tanks full of grain. Apparently grain expands quite a lot when wet.
