I've been waiting on this one for a while! I had always heard it is a slipper clutch but the factory book pictures are inconclusive. Please show and explain how this works, and of course, why its important and desirable.

It isn't a slipper clutch. It's a back torque limiter. Its purpose is to add pressure to the clutch plates during acceleration and keep the clutch lever pull light. If you have ever taken off briskly from a stop and noticed the clutch suddenly go full grab and send your front tire skyward without warning- it's the back torque limiter. The two pieces that fit together with the ramps in the center of the clutch basket- weld them together and be done with it.

The shit on the big fucking washer is copper grease to make it super slippy! I doubt hardly that it could be just some shit from the clutch wear. It has to suck to remove all the shite to just replace a stupid clutch... what does not look to bad to me.

Did you remove the clutch basket for the video and our benefit or do you advise taking it out to check the baring, spacer etc.? I would have assumed you would normally just replace the clutch pack with the basket in place?

It's a good idea to give everything a good coat of looking at while one is already in there anyway. And replace anything inexpensive, recommended or needed too. Ya never know when you will be in there again next. Hopefully not for some while. Do the job right and it needs doing once.

@@rationalmartian That seems like mildly extreme logic, we wouldn't do an engine rebuild because we have a flat tyre? I have a slipping clutch - I'm looking for a minimalistic approach to the solution without pretending like I'm doing a full engine rebuild. Lol, that's just me anyway. I don't believe in kicking the hornets nest if there's no reason to.

Geared Vegan Also depends how old the bike is. If it is ridden easily on the streets like every day I'd say it's alright. But some sunday wanker or if the bike was on the track often it is a different issue.. Also you can never be sure and have to prepare for a possible partial rebuild.
