Svalbard Bike Ride (Longyearbyen, Norway - August 2023)

A bike ride into Longyearbyen, Svalbard to see a pedestrian street, multi-use pathway, with a reindeer, and a nice view of the area along the way (August 2023).
Longyearbyen was a fantastic place to visit for arctic scenery, wildlife, history, and culture. Additionally, there were also three nice surprises: Very reasonably priced rental bikes available from the Tourist Information Centre, a pedestrian shopping street, and a paved multi-use pathway.
We start by riding North from Nybyen alongside one of the Reindeer we often saw between Nybyen and Longyearbyen. As we glide downhill you can see the old wooden cableway towers in the distance on the right. These transported coal from the various coal mines to the coal cableway centre (Taubanesentrale). We soon pass Longyearbyen Skole and the Svalbardhallen Athletic Center on the left.
At the next crosswalk, we leave Drammensveien (Vei 100) and enter a pathway that takes us to Hilmar Rekstens vei (Vei 200). After a short ride we see the Tourist Information Centre which offers rental bikes that can be rented for multiple days. At this point we have entered the pedestrian street. This is a great spot to go for a stroll where you will find shops, a grocery store, restaurants, cafés, post office, library, a medical facility and access to accommodation.
Next we head towards the paved multi-use pathway and pass more shops, restaurants, accommodation, and new student housing for Norges Arktiske Universitet (The Arctic University of Norway). As we turn right from the multi-use pathway onto the road (Vei 501) if you look straight ahead you will see the Longyearbyen disc golf course.
After we cross the bridge we pass the remains of buildings from Old Longyearbyen on the left. We then finish the ride by making our way to Svalbard Kirke for a nice view of Longyearbyen.
