Like others have already commented, the song is about forcing Christianity upon the people of the Häme (Tavast) area. Tavastian being one of the oldest tribes in Finland (yes, we had tribes and quite the animistic belief system!), you can hear the pain of the people when losing their old ways.

My family comes from Savonia area, and likewise, fought the change til the end. There still exists old sacrificial sites, but the church did all it could to make us give up for good. They told us to burn down our sacrificial trees; get rid of our old habits and rituals. Finns of today have very little knowledge of their true origins and history, as nothing is teached in schools about it and Finns are made to believe how insignificant we have always been.

The lyrics are a bit tricky, since they are in a poetic form. They are about being doubtful (/resentful) towards Christianity, as the people of Tavastia were baptized by force. Chorus tells about "a night in the middle of the winter, full of stars; seeing the lanterns of the castles (and magic of the witches) and the shadows over Tavastia". A poor translation, forgive me.
