In this video I discuss how we monitor the charge and voltage of our Lithium batteries on Delos including the following topics:
What are some of the heavy draw electrical items on Delos?
What can be run directly off the batteries and inverters?
How do we monitor our Lithium batteries on Delos?
For more details on the gear used for our electrical upgrades please visit:

Brian, I love your engineering mindset. You never jump to conclusions (like at the beginning when you are unclear whether Mastervolt has Bluetooth or not. You simply say "I don't know but here's WHAT I know ...". This is where a big part of your trustworthiness comes from. Love it. :-)

Great job Brian, I have spent a lot of time trying to teach people how to understand these terms and inter relationships. Looks like you have done a great job at getting your system up to date. One pitfall is the inverter. Many boat people threat their inverters like an after thought which is an expensive mistake if the ambient temperature derating curve is ignored. So the inverter winds up in a tropical enviroment buried in a hole with minimal ventilation and then they try to use the full rating of the unit. If you haven't done so, it would be a great service to your followers to get out the docs for your inverter and examine what happens to the output rating when it's in a ambient temperature of say 120° F or 40 to 50°C. Hope all is well....

Hey Brian. Thank you soooooo much for ALL of the videos you and team put out. I've pretty much watched all of your videos over the last few years... and now I've bought a sailboat. It's so cool to be able to look back and see how you did certain projects and see if what you did is the right thing for my Citation 34. It's an enormously helpful resource! THANK YOU! The Victron lineup for battery monitors is the BMV-700 and 702 (for 2 batteries) these do not come with bluetooth but you can buy a dongle add on. The BMV-712 is the bluetooth included model on the Delos. They come with a single 500 amp shunt rated to 96 volts max. The shunt is installed at the battery negative to measure all actual power flow.

I think there has been a Victron firmware update in the time since you filmed this. My MPPTs now have a "Trends" screen where you can select from a variety of electricity monitoring methods to display on a chart over time in real time. It resets when you connect to the MPPT, and I've seen mine display more than an hour (graph is adjustable). It's kind of nice! Good for Victron for adding new features to their existing product line and providing them for free. I'll be buying more! ALSO! There are a few pieces of hardware from Victron for collecting all the usage information and uploading it to their cloud service so you can track the details over long periods of time and view it in a really nice web page. The data is shareable as well. AND! You can run the local app on your own Raspberry Pi and have it send data to the same free Victron cloud service, if you want to do it on the cheap. I think Victron have to be some of the coolest geeks out there.

This is fascinating series, and Brian is a great host. It is a long time since I owned a boat, but I'm a retired techy so it is interesting to see how far things have come and how it is done these days. I've been watching this channel for two reasons. The tech stuff and how sailing has changed over the last 15-20 years, and the amazing video footage, particularly Alex's underwater stuff.

I have a Victron BMV-712 in both my Sprinter van conversión and on my boat. I love the BT interface and even more the ability to update firmware via WIFI or cell service. On the Sprinter install i put a Victron 300ah Lithium battery so with the same IOS app I check the voltage and temp of each cell. Just the thought of being able to communicate with my battery is amazing. Now if I could just do that with my toaster I would be in heaven.

These are really useful videos. I particular like that you are stress testing everything you have installed for weeks, months or years. Your movies are about the most up to date electrical systems like LED vs incandescent lighting, lithium battery banks, and multiple sources of charging. Once you have us all straightened out about power cables I would love to see easier explanations of troubleshooting NMEA connections. Is NMEA 2000 really the answer if you have a boat loaded with devices hooked up to the older standards? So many questions that you can help us to answer. THanks

I have the same unit as well, I love it! Only one annoying problem; some guy in my marina also bought the same monitor and now every time I turn the App on, it doesn't know which unit to connect to. The app displays both serial numbers and you must pick one. The serial number is on the outside of the box it came in..... Do yourself a favour and write that number down somewhere close at hand for that one chance that you park too close to a similar equipped boat. Cheers!

I had a couple Browning bows that were heavy draws 150 # and 80# but the batteries in the sites would last a month is you remembered to turn them off! But they did work good early morning and evening I used sr44 batteries 2 in each site! Was thinking about small solar cells to charge during the day but didn't get enough sun light in the woods even thou I was 15 to 20 foot in the tree! Funny ain't I? enjoyed

Brian, thanks a lot, I'm particularly keen on all your boat tech videos. I hope you get a minute to answer a question that is unrelated to lithium: you often show an handheld depth finder you use when scouting for an anchorage. Would it be possible for you to make a recommendation? It would be very helpful as I would need to import one. I tried to find a reference on your website but I didn't find anything. Thanks a lot in advance,

Brian, you do a great job of explaining technical things. I did not know the lithium vs wet battery differences but now I do! Love these tech moments! One question; I know wire size dictates how much power you can send; is there a difference in efficiency between lithium and wet when sending a longer distance?
@spaleshi1
@spaleshi1 4 жыл бұрын
Here is a really good calculator that helps you define the wire size required over the distance. circuitwizard.bluesea.com/ They have an application for your phone as well and I have used it often for running wire on our boat. Brian will have to answer your question.
@ianmackintosh7278
@ianmackintosh7278 4 жыл бұрын
It is wire size and Voltage that affect current flow over distance not the batteries. The batteries are storage only, that is they have different storage, recharge and discharge characteristics and different recycle abilities thereby different length of life. It looks like Lithium likes long discharge and high recharge while lead like short discharge (less than 40%) and slow recharge.
