I remember! This is the Richter sound. His sound is very, very heavy, like mercury. When Richter gave his first concert in Japan, I was a 10-year-old piano-loving girl. I had been to many pianist recitals by then, but Richter was the only one who grabbed my ears and heart and kept me going. I will soon be 60 years old, but I am still captivated by Richter.

The bronzen burnished tone quality is unforgettable. The brooding quality and autumnal mood bring Brahms to life. A mesmerizing performance that shows Richter's genius despite the poor sound quality.

Richter has been cursed by youtube. Lots of videos of him are all shot with terrible sound quality and worse video. The best part of this performance is how Richter separates the INNER voice from the top and bottom melodies. Too many amateur pianists think the 3-note ostenato is played like a noisy car alarm. Worst offender is Ragna Schirmer.

@Shana Yeah. In fact, this is one of the very few pieces ever where I've "converted"-from Rubinstein to Richter. Both titans, but IMO only Richter gets the phrasing perfect at the climax.

So beautiful to compare Richter with Rubinstein when it comes to this little masterpiece. How I see it is, Rubinstein the perfectionist, each note powerful and perfect and as it was intended on paper... but Richter the genius, with that emotional swagger, pretending to be Brahms himself, and therefore we hear... what Brahms intended. My words aren't coming out right here, but I think the word "swagger" comes close.

La mélodie est noyée, le rythme incompris, l'ensemble un brin caractériel. Nous voilà assurément très loin de Brahms. La renommée de Richter ne peut sauver cette interprétation abusive pénible à suivre.

"le son est noyé" "la mélodie est noyé" même commentaire même oeuvre, interprètes différents je me trompe ? Il va falloir se renouveler... D'autant que j'ai du mal à me représenter un "son noyé" - une mélodie à la rigueur.

Не смотря на безумной уважение Рихтеру, но это было объективно очень грязно, много фальши, она мешает восприятию его трактовки очень сильно. Не сказала бы, что это исполнение может считаться показательный, и тем более таких васторженных коментариев оно тоже не особо достойно
