Sviatoslav Richter plays Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.1

Richter was one of the greatest Russian/Soviet pianists of his era/this piece is fiendishly difficult in terms of changing keys and awkward technical hurdles-not only does he conquer them, but his freshness and light, almost airy approach fits the music like a glove-especially love his tone colors and propulsion of his chords and octaves-one of the best performances of this amazing concerto.

Little quibble..."one of the greatest" .... I would say, "the greatest". Feinberg... sure in Book 2, WTC. .... may be, eclipsed Richter.

The piano is a percussion instrument and Richter is one of the greatest percussionists ever born. His tempos and power are unmatchable. At times it sounds like he is pulling the orchestra and conductor along gleefully.

...Когда Прокофьев почувствовал, что перерос педагога, он перешел от Винклера в класс известной пианистки А.Н.Есиповой, считавшейся лучшим профессором консерватории. Общение с мировой знаменитостью, даже еще у такого восприимчивого ученика, даром не прошло. В результате, возрос артистический масштаб, развилась художественная индивидуальность. Прокофьев поставил себе целью окончить фортепианное отделение с отличием и завоевать премию имени А.Г.Рубинштейна. Любопытна программа, которую он выбрал вполне самостоятельно. Вместо традиционных фуг из «Хорошо темперированного клавира» И.С.Баха он выучил трудную фугу из баховского «Искусства фуги». Вместо классического концерта поставил свой Первый концерт. Завершала программу фантазия «Тангейзер» Вагнера-Листа. Сам Прокофьев назвал выпускной экзамен «боем роялей». Консерваторская профессура раскололась на две резко противоположные партии - «за» и «против» Прокофьева. Красноречив был отзыв директора консерватории А.К.Глазунова: «Самобытный виртуоз нового типа с своеобразной техникой, желающий извлечь из современного фортепиано непосильные эффекты, часто в ущерб красоте звучности. Утомительная аффектация, не всегда искренняя». При этом Глазунов поставил высший балл. В результате бурного обсуждения Первая премия имени А.Г.Рубинштейна «Рояль фабрики Шредер» была присуждена Прокофьеву. Он победил. Теперь ему предстояло покорить публику.

Кстати, по условиям конкурса жюри должно было ознакомиться с музыкой, и Прокофьев рисковал "пролететь" со своим концертом. Но издатель, к частью, успел - и судьи слушали исполнение Прокофьевым собственного концерта с новенькими клавирами перед собой :))

i saw Martha Argerich play the Prokofiev Piano Concerto 1 with Charles Dutoit & the Montreal Orchestra (?) 20 years ago in Philadelphia at a summer concert outdoors. i think it was the first work they performed and i was spellbound. i can't recall the other pieces they played. i had never heard nor seen anything like that performance. i bought a CD with Prokofiev's Piano Concerto 1, but it sounded nothing like hearing la Maestra Argerich playing it live. muchas gracias y saludos desde Tokio.

Великолепно!!!Какая мощь,напор,вот это действительно исполнение!!!Сразу хватает за душу,эмоции переполняют!!!Превосходное исполнение!!! А вот Д.Трифонов совсем не понравился,надеюсь,у Д.Трифонова всё впереди и он достигнет ещё высот великого С.Т. Рихтера?Или сейчас это просто публике не нужно?..Печально,если окажусь прав...

Наверное не правильно сравнивать, но я думаю Даниил уже и выше поднялся. Рихтер - веоикий пианист.. Трифонов - великий пианист и композитор.. + у него все впереди. Выбор очеаиден

Played with great rhythmic clarity. This has been one of my favorite piano concerti since my aunt gave me an LP of it (along with Rimsky-Korsav's and Glazunov's) when I turned 12 or 13 (over 60 years ago). When Phillips planned their set of recordings by the greatest pianists of the 20th century, they polled many people who ought to know, including especially pianists, composers, and critics. They only one voted by everyone to on the list was Richter. I wish more of his performances had been better recorded. I own and love Kissin's performance of this. My favorite pianist is probably Argerich; her performances of the Rach 3rd (live c. 1982), and the Bartok 3rd (from 2007 in Japan, purchasable only as part of a large set), are the best I've ever heard. And I've heard many, many recordings of the Bartok; he's been one of my 5 or 6 favorite composers since my mid-teens.

Notwithstanding other great artists on the keyboard,Richter was like a force of nature on the piano.The greatest musical enigma of the 20th century.When I listen to hom play I can't imagine the music originating for the composer,only Richter

И никакого блядского (fucking) ритмического кокетства в каденциях, в т.ч. в главной из них. Как это нередко бывает у других исполнителей, даже у мужчин. Жестко, беспощадно, как танк (merciless like a tank). В том числе и в лирическом эпизоде. И там триоли - как молоты по наковальне. Так и нужно это исполнять. Только так.

This Prokofjev piano concerto no 2 belongs 4 pianists S.Richter Mikhail Pletnev Andrei Gavrilov and Marta Argerich.Mikhail Pletnev plays the most poerful fashion from 8.16-8.50 like a nuclear explosion.But Richter Gavrilov Argerich may have a brighter piano sound.Andrei Gavrilov won the Gramophone award his Prokofjev 1 concerto recording.S.Richter was the king playing Brahms piano concerto no 1(wth Lorin Maazel and The Paris Orchestra) and Rachmaninov piano concerto no from 1959.

Acually i had a c-cassette Mihail Pletnev playing Prokofjev piano concerto no 2.I listen it so many times it was broken down.S.Richter many consider him the greatest.But Pletnev playing Haydyn piano concerto no 11 d major with a diamond piano.Pletnev problem is that he is the coolest.Richter and Gavrilov had or has a better colorful sound.Andrei Gavrilov his recording J.S.Bach concerto 1052 is better than Richter ever did.It is sad that S.Richter never played a masterpiece Prokofjev concerto 2
