Why does everyone worry about the pianist's expression and posture, editing and shots of face vs. hands? Richter himself preferred to play in the near-dark because he said people should not be distracted by such things. I always close my eyes of have the greatest possible concentration - very rewarding

Richter was a famously able sight reader, but here he seems to be playing with no score (maybe because it’s just too fast) and at about 3:30 he signals the page-turner to remove his glasses! These are trivial observations, I know, but all the superlatives about his playing have been written!

A few months before this performance I had first heard Richter play live (Beethoven Rondi op 51, Sonata op 101 and Variations on a theme by Diabelli ). His 1959 recording of Schumann's Toccata has been hardwired into my musical mind for more than 25 years - with my eyes shut, this one is clearly Richter. For one reason or another Richter had a page turner - you can see him in the video, however he does not require any sheet music for this performance of the Toccata

Stupendous performance...I have the legendary DG performance on CD. I think Richter's tempo in that one is a bit faster than here, and I like the piano sound a bit more, but both performances are great! Being able to WATCH Richter in his virtuosity here certainly adds much to appreciating his magnificence as a performer! Clearly human! Just wondering, that's all! Just testing my ears (2). There are mistakes in lots of live performances (e.g. Horowitz) which make them even more "human", of course. The newer "Wunderkinder" like Yuja Wang, Evgeny Kissin, Lang Lang, etc. don't make technical mistakes. But, as much fun as it is to hear them at a live performance, they have all the energy and passion, but lack the "connection" to the composer, as the legends have. I do agree with you.

@c.g.marseille4510
@c.g.marseille4510 7 жыл бұрын

Richter was out of his prime here and he was still learning pieces like this which are considered major hurdles for young virtuosos. Pogorelich's recording was in his prime, if you listen to his most recent performance of the Toccata it is even more labored than this.

BANGY, a little fuzzy around the edges, and surprisingly labored for a pianist of Richter's exalted stature. I heard him several times and he was marvelous, this is no one of his best performances. I suspect by this time in his career he'd stopped practicing, and I'm sorry to say it shows. I hate comparisons, so I won't mention other performers, but there are several nearby right here on KZbin who give much finer renditions than this.

Da gibts wenigstens was zu Lachen. - Grauenvoll.
@berlinzerberus
@berlinzerberus 8 жыл бұрын

Folks, be honest: this is the biggest piece of junk in music history, such an insane composition. First the raising white horse at the beginning, then the boring sound of that sewing machine going out of control, with finger No.4 being raped again and again until falling off, and then the "romantic" slow ending saying "Oh, how beautiful this was...." Absolutely unbearable stuff.

You can dismiss anything in this manner, dispensing arbitrary metaphors in the naive hope their supposed (nonexistent in your case) descriptive power translates into a coherent aesthetic appreciation. Prokofiev's piano music could be "hammering nails into the keyboard" or any number of inanities having to do with percussiveness. Anything slow can be written off as a "ponderous dirge", anything by Liszt as "finger raping" plus whatever metaphor a given piece attracts (it's too easy with program music). Not advocating never questioning the authority of famous artists or composers, but the fact that the likes of Richter, Gilels and Horowitz found it worth their time speaks so much more eloquently to the quality of this fun and invigorating piece than words - even those chosen by wordsmiths far superior to yourself - ever could.
