Wow!I have heard Richter play this sonata many times but this is surely the best of all. This recital (with the Brahms) is one of his best recitals.

Without melody in its usual sense, this extremely emotionally intense work might sound overbearing to some listeners, however, I am not counted among them. "Colossal" is truer in describing this music's effect. Its profundity is certainly extant, but confusion is also conjured - a door of complexity has opened to the listener albeit while tracing motives and form. Richter does not hold back, I feel he reveled in Szymanowski's music. Most pianists don't have the technical wherewithal to keep from bogging. For some listeners, this piece will be sublime - ever drawing, almost mystically, to further hearings.

The only problem for me with this piece is that it's too obscure to understand fully in a short time - so obscure that i eventually get 'almost' tired of it, which disturbs a full and complete appreciation...

He is not tragic. Dramatic, so enlightened and easygoing. Still so complicated and simpleminded. I can't even call him genious but absolutely tier 1 composer.
