Many people in Baden-Württemberg speak a dialect. In Stuttgart, we met with Anna from the language school "German Institute". She is a Swabian native speaker and shows us the most important differences between Swabian and standard German.
In Baden-Württemberg sprechen viele Menschen einen Dialekt. In Stuttgart haben wir uns mit Anna von der Sprachschule “German Institute” getroffen. Sie ist schwäbische Muttersprachlerin und zeigt uns die wichtigsten Unterschiede zwischen dem Schwäbischen und dem Standarddeutschen.

Im Sommer 1969 bekam ich eine Stelle als Lagerhilfsarbeiter bei einem Textilbetrieb in Augsburg. Obwohl Augsburg in Bayern liegt, ist die Stadt westlich des Lechs. Der Lech ist die Grenze zwischen den Schwaben und den Bayern. Damals war Schwäbisch die Mundart der Mehrheit der Bevölkerung Augsburgs. In diesen Bettwäschelager kam ich als Amerikaner, der Deutsch als Hauptfach an der Universität studierte. Ich war erstaunt, dass ich fast niemanden verstand und meine Mitarbeiter hatten sehr viel Humor. Allmählich lernte ich genug Schwäbisch zu verstehen, damit die Arbeit möglich wäre. Die Brotzeitsholerin machte sehr viel Spaß. Jeden Morgen fragte sie: „ Horch, Stef! Wos kriegschte denn heit‘?“ Ich verhungerte fast bis ich mich dazu gewöhnte. Als ich im Herbst wieder an die Uni in Amerika kam, musste ich das alles verlernen. Aber das bisseli wos i do zur Brotzeit zu nasche 🤣bekam, war so guad. I wollte ned hoimkomme.

Haha ich komm aus Westdeutschland und alle süddeutschen Dialekte sind für mich kaum zu verstehen. Einmal hat mich ein alter Mann im Allgäu angequatscht und ich habe getan als könne ich nur Englisch, weil es mir zu peinlich war, ihn nicht zu verstehen 😂

@@NeurosenkavalierEmilSinclair Ich kann in einem Meeting in Wien oder im Salzburger Land sitzen und niemanden verstehen. Und ich habe seit ich 15 Jahre alt war Deutsch gesprochen. Am schlimmsten ist es in der Schweiz. Ich habe aber gehört, das sei keine Sprache sondern eine Halskrankheit. 😂

There isn't one swabian dialect, but rather many dialects in different regions. The swabian from Stuttgart sounds very different than from Ulm and their dialect sounds different than from Meßkirch in Oberschwaben for example :)

It even matters from which village you are. For example the swabian in Esslingen (eastern neighbor town of Stuttgart) is different from Leonberg (Western neighbor town)

@@leobin6344 Yep. In my region (Bodensee) it all sounds very similar but every town has different words for the same thing sometimes. My mother is not from that region but when she was speaking dialect to other swabians she was told "One can hear you're from XY because you say "älle" and not "alle".

I live 25 km from Stuttgart, and my schwäbisch sounds a lot different from there's, don't know how to explain it, theirs is city schwäbisch it's a lot softet, with lots of hochdeutsch integrated into it, to were mine sounds more country...

Die Videos mit den unterschiedlichen Dialekten finde ich total interessant, selbst ich als Deutsche lerne dadurch noch viel dazu. Und es erinnert mich an unsere Reise nach Großbritannien, als wir zuerst bei Freunden in Schottland waren, und anschließend bei Freunden in Nord-Irland. Mit unserem Schul-Englisch waren wir da nahezu aufgeschmissen 😅

Ich komme aus Nord-Irland und dass kann ich nachvollziehen lol In Nordirland sprechen wir so schnell und unserr Aussprache ist sehr unterschiedlich, auf jeden Fall anders als in England oder Schottland. Wir hatten einmal ein paar Deutsche "Exchange students" für ein Semester und ich musste sehr deutlich Englisch sprechen, also icht musste meine Aussprache ein bisschen verändern, damit sie mich verstehen konnten lol. Aber mittlerweile spreche ich ein bisschen Deutsch und ich würde dieses Problem nicht mehr haben :)

I am from Pennsylvania, US, and I grew up with PA Dutch (German) grandparents. I never learned the dialect fluently, but I know enough of it to notice that many of the words that are different in Schwaebisch are the same in PA Dutch, but with a different accent. For instance, Grumbier=potato in PA Dutch, too! Wir haben=mir hen in PA Dutch. I was surprised! I knew that Pfaelzisch and PA Dutch are almost the same in many ways, but I did not know that Schwaebisch had so much in common, too. BTW my family tree traces my ancestors back to near Heilbronn (Massenbach.)

Heilbronn Dialect is what we call, a little too easy, Schwäbisch here, because of the Baden-Württemberg Dialect. Hen die Spätzle aus, nimmscht die Maultäsch? I am Bavarian. My Suabian is rare. 😁

Ja, I was thinking the same thing @playerofbach . Both sides sound closer to the Swabian accents I hear versus any other, and my family is one side Texas-German and the Penn-Dutch. I grew up hearing both from all the elders in my family, but being Texan. I heard Texas-German the most growing up versus Lancaster county Penn-Dutch. Though oma on the penn-Dutch side made the best gingerbread houses. I miss those so much. . .

I find these local dialects to be very charming. It shows how diverse languages actually were back in the day. It is only in the latter days of television and other media that languages have been merged and simplified

My grandma (in her late 80s), who lives very close to Stuttgart, used to say, she can also speak "English", because this Swabian sentence just sounds like English - and this would be: "Faif bier fe mi." which equals "Five beers for me." So, also in my opinion, "five" usually does not sound the same in standard German and Swabian :) !

Yes, I was thinking that, my family definitely says feif. Schwaben has many sub-differences. I'm from the Danube, Oberschwaben, and the Godfather, potato and 5 are all different from what the Ostälblerin said. But she doesn't have the semi-dialect Stuttgart "Honoratiorenschwäbisch", i.e. city folks attempt to sound posh and mixing Schwäbisch and Hochdeutsch more.

half of my family is from Bruchsal, which is a good piece from Stuttgart, but i had all the phrases and vocabulary down, even though i was raised in Unterfranken, which is a very different dialekt.

​@@uliwehner well, strictly speaking Bruchsal isn't schwäbisch but badisch (to be pronounced as bawdish). However, Swabian and Badenian dialects in the northern half of Baden-Württemberg are less different than they are in the southern half of the country.

@@davidrama5484Kind of, all goes back to actual old germanic tribes, and the Swabians are in fact the only germanic people in germany that still use many very old words from the older germanic languages. Together with the Saxons, they were also the ones that prayed to Wodan the longest (some untill the 8th century).

I came to Germany for the first time this summer, and met a ton of cool friendly people. The only two I couldn’t understand were the girl from Chemitz and the guy from Stuttgart. Listening to this makes me realize that even within the Swabian dialect there are differences, because I could understand most of what Anna said but not all, for example the word for potato, I don't think that is the same in the Tübingen area where my family was from. This video is my absolute favorite now, just loved hearing it. Please go to Tübingen/Esslingen and talk to the elderly people. :)

The word for potato would be in st.germ. "Grundbirne" - in engl. "groundpear". The yugoslavian people adopted this german word for potato: "Krompir" (sl), "Krumpir" (hr).

Yes, there are vast differences among all the speakers of Allemannic dialects. Those dialects include Schwäbisch, Elsassdütsch, Badisch, Schwyzerdütsch, Schwarzwald, among others. They have their subgroups too. The Swiss dialects can change from valley to valley.

Both Swabian and Swiss German are similar, because both dialects, and of course the people ,are descendants of alemannic tribe . Up to 1268 , execution of Konradin, last male of Hohenstaufen dynasty , the Herzogtum Schwaben existed, including german part of Switzerland, middle and southern part of Baden- Württemberg, bavarian diszrict Schwaben, and i think also Liechtenstein and austrian Vorarlberg.

Honoratiorenschwäbisch wäre dann die Steigerung🤣 Wusstet ihr übrigens, dass es schwäbische Worte gibt, die Hochdeutsche meinen zu verstehen, aber eine ganz andere Bedeutung dahinter ist? Ja, das ist interessant! Prvotno sam mislila da je ta riječ preuzeta iz turskog jezika, pošto oni imaju jednu jelo (punjeni krumpir) koji zovu krumpir (jelo)

Das liegt an den Donauschwaben, die im 17. Jahrhundert im Balkanraum lebten. Der Begriff wurde von verschiedenen Sprachen in der Region übernommen.

@@Landy258 In Österreich sag man neben den hunderten Aussprachen für Erdapfel auch Krumpa(n)/Krumpia(n)/Krumpea(n). In meinem Heimatdorf ist beides vertreten Krumpan sagen die Bauern, Erdapfel heißts im Wirtshaus und in der Schule sagt man leider Kartoffel. Muss also nicht zwingend mit den Donauschwaben zu tun haben.

Das serbische "Krumpir" ist ein Lehnwort aus dem (dialektalen) Deutschen. "Grumbier" bedeutet eigentlich "Grundbirne", von der Idee her ist's also ähnlich wie "Erdapfel"...

My husband is from BW and when I started learning German I found Schwäbisch extremely difficult to understand. Not only the pronunciation but grammar can be very different as well. E.g Oma always says “Mir kaufen nichts” which means “WE are not buying anything”. I have to say after a few years of learning German suddenly Schwäbisch is no longer that difficult to understand anymore (although I don’t live in BW) Btw, my husband really enjoyed this episode 😂

Swabian ist only spoken in a part of Baden-Württemberg, mainly in Württemberg. If you live in Baden, you won't hear Swabian although there are some similarities to Badisch and Alemannisch.

I live a bit close Stuttgart but living in Schwaebenland and when I moved to this area 2 years ago, I wanted to cry bc I lived in R-Pfalz for more than a year, then I came here and I couldn't understand anything, it was like if I have to learn German again haha. After these 2 years I can say, I like the dialect and I can understand most people. Saludos gente! :)

Ich liebe die verschiedenen Dialekte. Ich komm aus Österreich, und mir fällt auf wie viel Ähnlichkeit der Schwäbische Dialekt zum Österreichischen hat, viele Wörter hören sich sehr ähnlich an, nur anders ausgesprochen. Ich würde es super toll finden, wenn ihr mal tiefer ins Österreichisch eindringt, zb Burgenländisch oder gar Vorarlbergerisch. Das verstehen selbst die meisten Ost-Österreicher nichts mehr.

Ich liebe Dialekte! 🥰 Allerdings muss ich die Uhrzeiten korrigieren. Echte Berlin sagen (wie in Schwaben) "dreiviertel" oder "viertel", die andere Version wurde eingeschleppt. Verstanden werden beide Varianten, man muss aber mit 'nem frechen Spruch rechnen. 😉 In Bayern heißt es "Viertel vor" oder "Viertel nach". Im Raum Hannover gilt beides, wird verstanden und akzeptiert.

Dazu kommt noch der Uebergang zu Badisch in viele Orte. Als (von Kindheit auf) Alemannisch sprecher verstehe ich Badisch, Schwäbisch, Schwitzerdütsch und Elsässisch, und finde die Unterchiede eigentlich nur im Ton; ob Chääs oder Kaas, Chrüt oder Krüt M'r sàga àlle d'Geis, s'Ross, Emmala, d'r Butter, d'r Wurscht, m'r luaga, sìnd wunderfìtzig, und massa mit Muggaseckel. Un sìcher kei Hohseschisser mìt grossi Gosch...

This summer i spent a few days around Stuttgart before heading to the Black Forest, and i got talking to a lady on a train and mentioned how i was trying to learn German but was struggling to understand people. She told me that the problem was i was learning standard German, so the Swabian accent and dialect were comfusing. The funny thing is coming from the UK I'm very used to how difficult regional accents and dialects can be to understand.

Ich bin in Stuttgart geboren. Bin aber mit hochdeutscher Sprache aufgewachsen, allerdings mit einer Mutter, die Hochdeutsch erst mit zwanzig gelernt. Ich würde behaupten, im allgemeinen hört man meine Herkunft nicht, aber ab und an schleichen sich auf wundersame Weise kleine schwäbische "grammatikregeln" ein, die mich dann doch entlarven 😅. Übrigens, als ich mit zehn auf die Schwäbische Alb zog, habe ich monatelang einen "Dolmetscher" gebraucht um die anderen Kids zu verstehen. Hinzu kommt, dass es doch recht große regionale Unterschiede des schwäbischen Dialekts gibt. Stuttgarter Schwäbisch hört sich für mich niedlich, nervig an. Ostalb hat eher derbes schwäbisch. Reutlinger Alb liegt irgendwo dazwischen und Richtung Bodensee verändert es sich auch wieder. Das Schwäbisch auf den Fildern und Voralb klingt in meinen Ohren oft nach streiten.

The Suebi, alive and well. You can read about them in Roman texts from 2000 years ago. Natural History by Pliny, Germania by Tacitus. In fact the first story told about them on parchment is one in which they crossed the Rhine to the west under 'Ariovistus' and occupied the lands. Who wrote this? Well, Caesar, because he fought them. By the way, many theories exist asto what Ariovistus would look like in Proto-Germanic and thus mean. I personally think Ario is from *Harjaz and vistus is *wisaz. So that would be something like *Harjowisaz, which would mean "army-wise" or "war-wise", aka someone who knows much about war.

Interesting to know maybe, Swabian preserves some very old sounds. She doesn't say 'fleisch', she really says 'flaisch'. And a reconstruction of how it was 2000 years+ ago is *flaiski. And for example *haugaz is hauch in Swabian. And this is interesting because it is usually the vowels that change the most and the consonants that stay the same.

Wie ist es eigentlich mit dem Dialekt der Schwaben im Banat? Ich kenne Leute die von dort stammen, und obwohl sie sich als Babaterschwaben sehen, ist ihr Dialekt dennoch ein wenig anders, als das hiesige Schwäbisch. Gemäss Wikipedia sind einige der Banater Dialekte Mitteldeutsch (Mosel- und Rheinfränkisch) also definitiv nicht Schwäbisch. Kann sein, dass der Ausdruck "Schwaben" ein Exonym der umgebenden Völker war. Ich kann mich erinnern, dass ein Tscheche den Ausdruck "Schwaben" generisch für Deutsche verwendet hat, und wir tun das (despektierlich) definitiv in der Schweiz (Sonderbarerweise vor allem in der Region Basel, wo die direkten Nachbarn Alemannen sind, nicht Schwaben.)

Das mit den Uhrzeiten kenne ich aber auch. In Ostberlin war und ist es nach wie vor vorwiegend "viertel 5", "dreiviertel 5", "5 nach halb fünf", " fünf vor dreiviertel 5" etc. Ich spreche so und meine (ostdeutschen) Freunde und Bekannten auch...nur die aus Westberlin verstehen mich dann meistens nicht sofort 🙂.

Viertel und Dreiviertel ist generell in den den östlichen und südlichen Bundesländern (auch in Bayern) üblich, in Nord- und Westdeutschland sagt man Viertel vor und Viertel nach. Für geborene Westberliner gibt es nur Viertel und Dreiviertel, es sei denn es sind Zugezogene. Was ist dann hier "Standarddeutsch"?

Fun fact: in Serbia we call cockroaches “buba švabe” (swabian bugs). But also derogatory term for all germans is švabe (we use it when we want to say something bad about germans in general), i guess it stuck from ww2.
