“Meet the Grahams” was the turning point. It’s the song that people usually don’t go back to because it was so dark. But Kendrick is a master of timing. “Family Matters” was a great song with great energy and Drake in his bag. But when “Meet the Grahams” dropped it cast a dark cloud over the culture. It was venomous,it drained all the energy from Family Matters before it started and you can tell Drake was thinking “Family Matters” was gonna go atleast for a few days or weeks( he took time to shoot a video),however, it didn’t have time to stick it brought the energy down while simultaneously clearing the runway for Not Like Us which which brought the energy back up this time in Kendrick’s favor and that was ultimately the k!ll shot

Drake knocked Kendrick & a long list of others off of their square with push ups then literally taunted them for a week. Kdot’s responses were all subpar at best, nothing special OR impressive about them. “I hate the way you talk & dress.” Really? that’s the best he could come up with after a week? 🗑️ Family matters was the nail in the coffin, they not like us raised Kendrick from the dead. It went viral bc of the shock value/comical aspect of it & also those algorithm bots j cole mentioned on port Antonio to sway the public’s opinion so everyone says he won. But did he? This is battle rap, bar for bar who had the better diss records? Line up push ups with ANY of the 6 songs kdot dropped & bar for bar… Diss record vs Diss record, Kdot fell short. Battle rap is a matching of wits & intelligence, not social media memes. Tde capitalized on it flawlessly tho no question! But to a REAL battle rap fan, kdot got lucky. It’s the Same situation like when nas appeared to have won the jay z beef with ether, but lyrically jay z’s superugly was WAAAY worst.

I don’t respect Rick Ross just like I don’t respect Drake) Euphoria knocked Drake down a lot of notches Family matters got the air sucked out of it Not like us (regardless of how anyone feels about it) is objectively a certified mainstream hit and people are still looking at Drake differently. 🤷 probably his voice projection. With so much potent lyricism the matrix had to make a balance of strength to weakness as a defense mechanism to keep the chaos in motion. He needs the right producer/engineer with an ear that can force a psychological intrusion to a mass audience but hip hop has had cancer for many years and getting choked out and shot up for the past few years so... There's only so many remedies left if any. And they're mainly drastic.

It feels good to hear the perspective of a real fr lyricist that pays attention to the intricacies of the art form. It's definitely missing in all the convos about the battle, & really just all coverage about rap that I've seen. I wish a lot more ppl dove into the art of rap more & drew conclusions, projected their own perceptions as facts, & regurgitated the messy shit, less. To me, it's like, the standpoint of appreciation for artist is way more valuable to hip hop as a culture, long-term, than the degradation of artist is. When Lupe Fiasco, who I considered to be a top two lyrics all the time says that the only rapper he is scared of is King Los, that tells you everything you need to know.
