To explain more or less what Swagger was talking about at the end... When you look up at the sky and see the stars, what you are seeing is what they looked like light years ago (which means some of those stars already died but we are seeing their past) For example, I believe the Sun is like 9 light minutes away from us. Which means when we look up the sky and see the Sun, we are seeing what it looked like 9 minutes ago, because that is the amount of time it takes light to reach us. If the sun were to suddenly dissapear, we wouldn't know until 9 minutes later (or something like that). Tbh this a topic someone like me shouldn't talk about because I'm simply remembering stuff I've read on the internet, sorry if I'm misinforming anyone.
@DarkMan12904 жыл бұрын
The exact number would 8 minutes and 20 seconds and you’re right about looking up at the stars and seeing their past,also random fact,because gravity waves travel at the speed of light we would also orbit the spot for the sun for another 8 mins and we know once we see it disappears,this all hypothetical because the sun just poofing out of existence all of sudden,yeah things Can quantum tunnel but on the scale of the sun there isn’t enough time in billions of universes for that to be something worth discussing
@karlzuppin48234 жыл бұрын
Your first sentence trying to explain it proves you know nothing. "When you look up at the sky and see the stars, what you are seeing is what they looked like light years ago (which means some of those stars already died but we are seeing their past)" Light years is a measurement of distance, not time.....
@senorvillhiamdlieahl1184 жыл бұрын
Karl Zuppin, Light Years is not just a term for distance, yes it is for distance, but it is also for time, as in the distance light travels in a year. Light years exist so that astronomers and physicists could describe the vast size of the universe in a coherent manner.
@scuffed42044 жыл бұрын
This makes more sense now, thank you.
@Myemnhk4 жыл бұрын
Not many people know that a light-year is a measurement of distance not time (how far light travels in one year). Basically it comes down to the fact that those objects are so far away from us that the light from them takes hundreds to thousands of years to reach us so in essence you're seeing the star as it was 1000 years ago when that light first left the star. Cool thing is gravity travels at the speed of light aswell so if our sun disappeared we wouldn't know for 8.5 minutes and we'd still revolve around it for 8.5 minutes after it disappeared too. Also correction to swagger our galaxy is 200,000 light years across not 2000 so light from one side would tale 200,000 years to reach the other.

I feel the same way! As someone who loves science, space, quantum mechanics and just science related things in general, Swagger got a lot of things wrong like you dissapearing if you hypothetically time traveled (since it's not possible to time travel unless you believe you can travel faster than light which is also impossible and wormholes would likely have radiation or some filter to kill you if you could enter one) I forgot what I was talking about but there's a lot of things he got wrong and they never set a middle ground so they just mixed different theories

(warning: extremely long and headache-producing comment incoming) - i'm not a scientist (duh) but i am a huge science & astrophysics enthousiast. I also used to do quite some essays about these specific topics for school projects. Swagger is overall pretty right but its a bit too simplified. So because i have nothing better to do right now and i like brain training these sorta things i'l try to fill the gaps here for anyone interested within the knowledge and information i have, but take everything with a grain of salt. in the end im just a guy with a laptop _________________________ *Time Travel: How far to the future?* - if you would want to ''travel'' to the future today, the only real choice you have is trying to deal with an effect called Gravitational Time Dilation. What this entails is that objects with a lot of mass create a strong gravitational field wich results into the curving of space and time. within this gravitational field time will run slower for objects or people within that field, while on the other hand objects or people outside of that field will experience time faster. - We already ''experience'' this when going to the top floor of a skyscraper or basically moving further away from earth's core but that difference is so minor there is no way we can be physically aware of it. In the movie *Interstellar* they show this in a much more extreme way with a Supermassive Black Hole as the gravitational field. (stay away from Black Holes tough, you really dont want that smoke) if you could get in and out of such a gravitational field or maneuver its orbit for a calculated amount of time the only limit you have is how strong gravity will be. Its not science fiction but it will be centuries in the future that we might be able to pull this off *Missing due to time travel with a time machine:* - this is still pretty much speculation but if string theory and some of its currently associated hypothesis' would be in place here then you will no longer be present in the literal time you are traveling. Because you simply are not there. Swagger had that completely right. So when you travel to the future there is no chance to meet your older self. The part where it gets interesting is: what would happen if you go back to the past when you were younger or when you are not born yet? - the most populair hypothesis at this moment is that this will create a parallel universe where your constructed changes will manifest, while if you would go back to your own time things will be like they always were. Another possibility is that you break space and time and get yourself stuck in a paradox or just cease to exist wich has been quite popular in the past *How much would change if you go into the past?* - like i said above, by what is speculated right now (with much uncertainty) The moment you return to your point of departure in space and time nothing will have changed for you and your ''universe'' if the multiverse is a real thing, wich is still quite unsure but becoming a populair theory more and more every day. Its very possible that you would meet your younger self and you will also most likely disappear in your present time whilst you are traveling to the past. My personal addition and belief to that is that if you were to time it perfectly you might be gone for just a splitsecond and the effects of it could be minimal. then again, im not really a scientist so i might as well just blow up the galaxy with that. ------------- Yes Swagger, you could indeed prevent yourself from time traveling but to do so you should either travel from a later future in your timeline to the moment you used the ''time machine'' or you should directly go to the past and live there up until the moment you used it. Both don't sound ideal to me but assuming the mentioned theories apply it could be possible. No Fitz, there is no keeping the timelines clean. if you use the effects related to Gravitational Time Dilation for endeavours to the future a multitude of timelines is *not in the equation* ..... Sorry. But anything else that would use techniques such as a Wormhole for example would include interaction with the higher dimensions aside from the 4 we know (see that as the XYZ axis and Time) and there is very little surrounding that wich is actually theoretically proved through mathematics,. Simply said: Wormholes work on paper but aside from that we have no fucking clue if they can even excist (there is one way we might be able to test it, but we wont be there to see it) Yes Swagger, Wormholes are indeed really fucking cool. However, Time travel is not the first thing we could or should do when manifesting them. They would be much more effective as a shortcut for interstellar travel and colonising space then to travel to the future or past, since a wormhole almost quite literally penetrates space and time throughout the universe to put it simply. So you would travel through the 5th and possibly 6th dimension as some sort of highway-like spherical tunnel or bridge, and while we could use that for time travel, we first would have to control or evolve into the ability to interact with these dimensions like we interact with time, space, light, and everything else we experience in our current 4 dimensional experience but who the fuck cares i would like to go to another galaxy just as much. I hope anyone who read this has enjoyed it. If i fucked anything up feel free to call me out, i like a good conversation but as mentioned im not actually educated in these subjects or careerpaths, its a hobby thing.

Wormholes work like a piece of paper. Think of it like going from one end of the paper to another instead of traveling across the entire paper its quicker to just fold it in half as now the distance is a short as physically possible. Wormholes bend space and time to get you to a destination in theory.

Swagger was actually somewhat close to what he was trying to say light years is a measurement of distance and time itself it's the distance and time it takes for light from our sun to reach earth light travels at a set distance and a light year is the time it would take for that light to reach earth so when we record things we are recording them from a different time in it of itself we are seeing what it was from how many light years away it is so if you were to teleport there it would be different than what we see here on earth

Swagger was correct by the way. When you look at a star that is 2000 lightyears away, the light from that star will take 2000 years (because it's 2000 lightYEARS away) to reach your eyes. Where he was wrong was that if you went through a wormhole to said star, you wouldn't travel through time but you'd see the star as it currently is and not how you saw it on Earth. I could be wrong about the second part, but not entirely wrong I don't think.
@thathologuy82994 жыл бұрын
About the wormhole thing, if the "string theory" is the explanation of the universe, thn wormholes are like shortcuts. In other theories, wormholes act like "whiteholes" which are the opposite of blackhole and travel to a parallel universe. Wormholes sound cool, but they're likely to not exist with our current understanding of the universe.
@rexthegrand12324 жыл бұрын
I believe swagger was trying to say, something on the lines of this. For you to get to that other galaxy 2000 light years in an instant it would cause you to have moved a lot faster than light which is impossible, as light speed is constant so to make sure the speed of light is constant you would have to basically go into the past

Personally, I think going back in time is inherently irresponsible. Anything one does could affect the timeline in all kinds of negative ways, and the further back one goes the more likely that gets. Not to mention all the people who would go back for the express purpose of changing the timeline, whether out of self interest or a misguided sense of justice. If one of them went back, they could do all kinds of damage, potentially erasing billions of people from existence. The responsible thing to do when one encounters a time machine is to destroy it/any documentation of it, and kill anyone who could possibly build another.
