Very informative. I jumped on this as I have MS and occasionally cough through eating. I joke that I can cough/choke on “air” but it feels quite serious and scary when it happens. I have my infusion (Ocrelizumab) this month and will see my Neurolgist soon do I will mention this. Thank you for this video 👍🏻😁

nutcracker esophagus is a diagnosis I have experienced. One of the causes of this I was told is nerve damage. This is where I assume there is a link to MS.

Thank you for sharing this video. I also have and have had swallowing trouble for over the past 6-7 years. It can cause very dramatic hiccups that if I just let it be ... they can continue 1 to 2 hours. Can not swallow cannot vomit. I need to self isolate in a bathroom and sit on the floor and meditate to just calm my spazzrming throat and esophagus. I have discovered triggers that I avoid. Also found a secret... that clear water can be a 1st response to stop them if I catch them early. If I feel them getting started, get a swallow without spitting down. Then drink a full glass and a 30-60 seconds break before continuing eating. Also plain vanilla icecream. Rich creamy coatsand cooles the muscles. Also avoid animated or emotionally intense conversations. Good luck with your journey, and thank you.

I had an MBS done this last July. I was diagnosed with GERD. The study also showed "decreased esophogeal function" as well. This is what concerns my neurologist at the Dalhousie MS Research Clinic. Smaller bites, slower eating, and thinking about swallowing before trying to do so, helped a great deal. Still, it's really scary when it happens. I don't like it.

This was very helpful! I've never heard the term premature spillage, but that's exactly what I have been dealing with. Things like cereal or chicken noodle soup, where there's liquid but also something you need to chew, are the worst.

Excellent video! I’ve had the barium test done and they found I have moderate dysphasia. I have a lot of problems with swallowing everything, including saliva but things like fruit are particularly difficult because I have to accommodate the solid and the liquid at the same time. I also want to point out that I always feel like I “forget” how to swallow. This makes more sense to me now that you’ve explained the cognitive aspect involved with choking.

Very helpful information. I’ve worked with a few SLP over the years and this information tracks so well. One thing not addressed is the coughing that results from just swallowing spit. This is so much worse for me lately.

Thanks for this, it was really helpful to get an overview of the hows and whys of dysphagia and the treatments. I'm heading in for a MBS in the next couple weeks and really had no idea what to expect. The last time I choked was actually during an infusion. The nurse came in to check on me - I tried to say "I'm fine!" and no sound came out. Super scary. Thank you!

Good morning! Thank you for another great video. I'm a new MS patient, so I'm trying to do all of the research that I can, without linking EVERYTHING to MS. I've had an annoying cough (especially when eating) for a long time. I thought it was just a stupid habit. I'm going to be sure to talk to my dr. about it next time. Thank you again.

I eat super slowly by the way and i have never been able to chug water. I drink from a straw more than fifty percent of the time and I never ever drink a lot. Choking for me happens when eating and talking. Not sure if I officially have this diagnosis but I am thinking I do 😐 I’ve always been fascinated by the field of speech pathology and now this takes it up a notch.

I have had swallowing problems (especially with liquids) for a couple years and have had an x-ray swallow study done. My speech therapist assigned exercises to try to strengthen the muscles involved. I've taken to swallowing my medications with yogurt, because I rarely have a problem swallowing food. Lately, I've been experiencing difficulty breathing while I speak, especially toward the end of the day. My neurologist prescribed steroids because she suspected spasticity in my throat muscles. Is this something that you've seen before in other patients?

I just got an upper GI. No reason found for my dysphagia except Gerd. You got my attention with the title. I only have dysphagia when I fall asleep briefly then wake up. I can't even remember how to swallow so I take a sip of coffee to force myself. It literally feels like I'm going to die if I can't make myself swallow soon. My throat completely collapses sometimes, too. I have to spit my drinks into the garbage can a couple times a day because I choke and it tears my guts where my hernia is from all the coughing. Does that sound like MS or something else? I have a severe hunchback from breaking my spine so I can't sit up.

I chooke quite a bit on liquid, it seems that there is not much u can do, it just gets in the wrong way. I wud reccommend people to always be aware of their swallowing(how stupid that might sound) and eat in peace and quiet. Thanks for educational vid doc!

If you thicken your liquid a bit, you may find it a little easier to swallow. There's a product I bought for my wife called, "Thick-it," which helps a lot. The more powdered product you add, the thicker the liquid becomes, so you can figure out what thickness works best for you.

Is there a similarity with heat and cold affecting swallowing? Not so much with external heat or cold but with the actual food? For example, certain foods - mostly cold like ice cream does this to me. I, for a bit thought maybe a dairy allergy but it doesn't happen with all dairy. Cold affects my other nerves. i.e. cannot lift legs or walk in cold so I would assume that it could possibly affect my swallowing nerves🤔. I suffered for a long time with speech and throat muscles. Had to go to speech therapy in past (before ms diagnosis). And I also frequently choke on my saliva! 😳 Never before thought any of it could be related to MS.

What Is the difference between barium and modified barium swallow study?
@kiwipics
@kiwipics Жыл бұрын
The modified version follows the barium as far as the GI junction / stomach. A normal barium swallow just shows the mouth and very top end of the Oesophageal tract.

So...how often is not normal to choke on saliva, drink or food...or having something go down the wrong tube or feeling like you swallow and it gets stuck and feels painful to swallow down? Is several times a week abnormal?

would you consider " difficulty swallowing " as when you have to actually think about swallowing . or when you don't completely chew ur food before u swallow.. I find myself always saying .. okay chew your food. as I have already swallowed it realizing its only been chewed 3 times

I also have to “think” about swallowing liquids. I generally drink from a glass and hold it in my mouth before swallowing (not on purpose), just because I can’t seem to automatically swallow anymore.
