I own a Rodent 6 and love it. I don't do a lot of carving but have made numerous fires and shelters with it. I only wish I could have waited for a Rodent 7 but it took over 3 months to get my 6 and it was in stock!!. Azwelke built me a nice custom kydex sheath with multiple ways to attach and wear. I like the grip and most people that have handled it say it fits and feels nice. I am a bigger guy with pretty big hands maybe that helps?

For anyone wondering, the SpecOps 6" sheath DOES fit this knife. I have two of the 6" sheaths and it fits in both of them perfectly with no issues at all. The knife does not rattle or move inside the sheath and goes in and out smoothly.

Good review, I was shocked to see the ergo rating. whenever I choke up to use a choil I naturally place my thumb on the back of the spine or I lose leverage. an when the thumb is on the spine my hand naturally arches over the guard an I cant even tell its there... I have a team Gemini an even with the larger guard I find it very comfortable to do detailed work. interesting how everyone does it different

Busse has a Custom Shop that very few knife companies have. Everybody has an opinion and opinions are like noses and everybody has one, I have my Modde Rodent 6 alot longer than you had this loaner. Infact I have almost the whole complete line of Swamp Rat Knives in the Rodent Series, but I didn't like the look's of the Rodent 6 Tactical look, it's not a knife for what I did in the bush But now Aaron, it's my all time favorite 6" blade hands down Its still robust and tough as nails that holds a super great edge, and no top gaurd. That allows my hand to move more naturally when I'm chopping, infact it out chop's some of my larger knives. Aaron, Your underestimating the quality and how good that steel is for the money. Do this Aaron, have someone else make you just a plain 52100 knife that size and see what they would charge you. Sure some guys will agree with you, but those guys are the ones that don't have a Swamp Rat, and don't have a clue what a Swamp Rat is. And believe me Aaron I'm not trying to be rude, I really enjoy your channel and watching your videos

Swamp Rat well Busse knives use that Rough coating because they know it's going to smooth out, it's made like that with that specific coating for that reason, it's their special coating.

My favourite knife in the 5"-7" range and it does fit the Spec-Ops short sheath just fine. I disagree with your appraisal of the handle, but I have large hands and maybe it just fits me better. Other than that, great review on a knife that, as you say, gets very little air time on KZbin.

I think it's really important to call this what it is, which is a soldier type knife. Not in any way a bushcraft or woods knife, unless it needed to be in survival situation. Less important than even a sidearm in terms of "fighting" but could do it well if needed. Indestructible, probably used sparingly but when used it would be used hard. Without specifying that, which to me seems it's obvious market, I can see why it's rated low. I suppose a lot of people would not not consider these things

I think leather sheaths sold at the Pathfinder store (made by Condor, if memory serves) might fit this knife. They're just a few bucks, and very solid quality. Just an FYI for those who don't want to spend much on the sheaths.

Aaron that handle reminds me of that Zero Tolerance fixed blade. That knife if I'm not mistaken is $300. I don't know what it's made out of but I'm wondering if that problem of hand fatigue would carry over. I have recently purchased some pricey Italian knives, LionSteel M7 and Extrema Ratio Dobermann IV and RAO. KnifeCenter has the latter two. Good video thanks. Mike

Excellent and honest review. I took one look at that knife and before you said anything about it I saw that the ergonomics would be an issue. I speak more from a bushcrafter perspective so I don't see much of a use for this one myself, but if nothing else, the price point and lack of a sheath alone would steer me away from this blade. I did purchase a KA-BAR BK-10 BECKER CREWMAN FIXED BLADE (quality of which is nothing to sneeze at) some years ago and have since given it away to a friend, but even after putting micarta scales on it and making a kydex sheath for it, the price gap remains a huge one. I'm not knocking the quality of the RAT but from a price and ergonomics perspective I think the Becker would be a better purchase. Just my humble, not very tactical minded background, opinion. As always great review... Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next one.

@Randy Bear The Rodent 6 is easily customizable and the SR-101 steel is awesome. The upper knife guard can be taken down and the knife thickness can be lessened. One hell of a knife in my opinion.

Say Heah Aaron, Yesterday Santa in his Brown Truck delivered my RatWeiler, WoeW, it's a Beast. My measures from tip to handle is 7 3/4" and 1 5/16th's" thick, a real good chunk of 52100 Ballbearing Steel that came newspaper sharp. Now I have a nice stable of Rodent with the Lightning Bolt Style Handle and a nice stable of the Seahorse Style Handle which include my Rodent Solution, RMD and my Modde Rodent 6. I'm so use to my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4 I consider that set as one of my Fav's. But for a almost 8" blade this RatWeiler is going to give a run for the money as a chopper. I would almost say it might give one of our Fav's a run for the money the Gen2 SP-53. Although I haven't face them off together yet. But by just the similar weight, It seems like it will be a good chopper in the shorter side of the heavyweight's. Abyhow I'm very pleased and as usual, Swamp Rat, Trissy and the Guys did a excellent job on mine. By the way. a large Spec-Ops fits it like a glove. It might fit into the Potbelly or the Zomstro sheath's Dunno yet I will check it out. Nope it didn't fit in the Zimstro Sheath, It's too long, but it can work in a pivh, That Zimstro is a big knife. I use it similar to a Carpenters Hatchet with its straight coping style blade. it's a awesome knife but a little too much wood drag when I baton. Would I buy it again ? in a heart brst. It's a very good chopper.

I have this knife. I still love it and use it all the time. I modified the knife a bit. First I removed part of the integral guard. The scales I removed and set up torx screws through the scales and tang. This way they could be removed for basic service such as cleaning . I also went with a cold blued finish and added a good convex edge. I went ahead and also worked the blade to achieve a better flat grind. Still for the most part kept the basic knife blade design. I did go with the Spec Ops sheath and removed the screw at the bottom which allowed this knife to be carried in a 6 inch sheath rather than the 8 inch. So basically it could still be used in a Tactical situation but now is also better suited for bush craft or basic survival. On the top edge also worked in a area so it will strike a ferro rod and throw some real sparks. I have Busse Combat knives I have not modified and never will. But the Swamp Rat is in a decent price range to be a hard use knife. I still to this very day believe this is one of the best Swamp Rat knives ever made. This knife basically was modified before Swamp Rat created the Ratmandu. And the Rodent 6 I have is almost identical to the Ratmandu. The Ratmandu is another one of Swamo Rats better designs. Great knives and the scales work extremely well in all environments.

I really like a lot of the Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrap Yard knives, but they are expensive, and I have yet to get one. I really like the Swamp Rat Rucki, it would be absolutely perfect for the blazing I do up in central Maine over the summers. But between the Rucki and a really large kydex sheath, I would be pushing over $400... so that is not going to happen any time soon. Nice and well planned out review as always.

Sheath: yeah, it should come with a sheath. IMO. BUT, the Spec-Ops sheath works like a CHAMP with this knife, with the rivet drilled out of the bottom. I never liked the rivet anyway, not sure why it was there. I think you can buy new liners from Spec-Ops now and they don't have the rivet. But anyway, I originally thought I'd eventually get a Brown sheath, and use the Spec-Ops with some other knife. However, I like it so much, I never got the kydex. I personally prefer nylon or leather sheaths, as long as they have a plastic liner of some sort. So, agree with the 0/5 on the sheath, but the Spec-Ops with this knife is a 4/5, maybe 5/5. I have not noticed the issue with the upper guard. I was hesitant to get mine with it -- you can order it customized from Swamp Rat, although it does incur an additional cost. I think $30, but then it is like a Ratmandu, scaled up slightly in all dimensions. But I have used mine quite a bit out in the yard in clearing brush after storms, hacking branches off of trees that I'm going to later use as firewood. And where I've used it for whittling tasks (admittedly, not building a shelter or fabricating snares/traps), having the upper guard against the web of my hand, with my index finger in the choil, has been fantastic. Really locks my hand into position, and I haven't noticed it being an issue. In fact, it has caused me to wish that more of my knives had an upper guard like this. Not the big, squared-off ones like on the USMC knife, but rounded like the Rodent 6. I think, though, that most of my work with this knife has been with gloves, as I only pull this knife out for the really heavy duty work. So, while in most every review of yours that I've seen, where I own the knife, I would 100% agree with you, this area we differ. For me, the Rodent 6 sets a benchmark for ergos in the hand, that make it feel the best in my hand of any of my knives (BK&T, Buck, Ontario Rangers, even one custom Simonich Aurora) for heavy duty work, that would make it a 5/5 for me. But I think that is entirely because I have and use this knife for tasks different from the core bushwork that is your forte, it appears. It's thick, it's heavy, it's a beast. But it opened my eyes to thicker, heavier-duty knives, and made me try a few more. But the Rodent 6 is the one I come back to as my favorite. If I tried to use it for core bush-craft work, I'd probably change my mind, because I think your reviews are so often spot on, you're probably right. Loved the dueling tree segment. Haven't seen that one before. Overall, though, even though I disagree with you on a couple things on this knife, your review, as always, is definitely 5/5. I haven't seen any better. Just the right amount of talking, working, and justifying your review. Always great. I have a Ratmandu, and HAVE used it a little more for bush-crafty things, and general utility. You might take a look at one of those. It and the Rodent 6 fall into that sweet spot of blade length that I like to use.

I never liked the handle design on the Rodent 6, for what I know the Rodent series (from Rodent 3 to 9) are all single guard knives so I'm not sure why they only made double guards on the 6, and to me this knife is a bit too heavy to be used as tactical knife. For the knife this size I personally prefer the Sykco 711 from Scrap Yard, their Resiprene C handle is more comfortable in hand.

Good honest review. I struggle to see the value of these high end fixed knives - especially when there is no sheath, and loads of others that do the jobs about as good for half the price (esee 6, BK7, cold steel recon scout even). I'm sure its well made but it all has to come together for $208 and no sheath!

I was really interested in this knife until I saw the review. The sheath I could make no problem. The fact that the hand guard would create hotspot and the handle creating a hotspot, is a deal breaker. Thats why I love my Tops Condor Alert. After long use I dont have any hotspots, no guard but the gimping on the back of the handle is not aggressive but gives enough traction when chopping or stabbing to keep hand from sliding. For the $, I would buy a Tops or an Esee.
@blainwilson7937
@blainwilson7937 6 жыл бұрын
@Todd Klekotka The Rodent 6 has combat applications and is offered in very tough SR-101 steel. The Tops or Esee are both very good but limited due to their 1095 carbon steel. You get what you pay for with Busse's subsidiary, Swamp Rat.
@schlooonginator1227

Completely agree with all your points. I hate guards and think they are silly even if they are supposed to be somewhat tactical, at least the top portion. It leaves me wondering why bother with a choil? Had they brought the edge right up that would be an improvement. All your points are exactly why I chose the Scrayard 711 with the exact same blade but an extra inch longer and mine uses their Res C handle which is like Fallkniven's-rubber like but larger and a palm swell. Its a very plain but proven design. The 711 is a decidedly less of a looker but a better performer IMO.I was a bit surprised about the hot spot though on your review as I thought it "looked" very ergonomic but looks can deceive Mine is also blade heavy due to the tang much as a Fallkniven should be which is fine for a woods knife as it improves chopping. Besides, who wants a .265" stock fighter? I have grown to dislike blades this thick though but I try to justify it by thinking it would improve chopping and batoning. The traction coating is something I am not a huge fan of but don't hate it because it does protect the blade and is easy enough to remove. Finally, why I chose the 711 was it was quite a bit cheaper, about $50 cheaper for a longer blade, no brainer. So don't forget to check out the "yard" if you are checking out Bussekin knives. They are the best bang for the buck if you can live without it looking pretty. I would love to have you review mine but I am too cheap to ship it from Canada.

Say Heah Aaron, First of all the SR101 is 52100 Ballbearing Steel that's Deferentially Busse Technology Tempored that's why it's so tough, 52100 by itself is a excellent blade material, I had my Rodent 6 modified at Swamp Rat I had the blade thinned down and it's just a super slicer and I also had the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods (to see how it looks, look at a Ratmandu but a little bigger), as far as the sheath I used a Small Spec Ops Sheath also I got a dangler sheath from Battle Horse and they also have leather sheath's to fit it with dangler and their not that expensive My friend at Mashcats will make you a beautiful kydex with Tec-Loc without sending the knife in and he's not that expensive. Yes the Rodent 6 is more a Tactic Knife, but at Swamp Rat you can have them take the Top Gaurd off for just a little extra and they didn't charge me at all for the thinning, Here is my thought on it, for a knife this tough and the Ballbearing Busse Technology Temporing for what your getting it's a EXCELLENT price best buy for the $$$, check out Mer on KZbin and see his test on the SR101. My knife with the simple modifications made my knife a super slicer and not having the top taken off I have NO problems with hotspots, infact it made it a better natural chopper for that size knife, I love mine, and if I ever lost mine or it got legs and walked away, In a heart beat I would get another one, even if it cost more. But if you get a Swamp Rat Aaron, try the Ratmandu. That's the knife that started me on amour with Busse's.

You send this vid to busse to maybe persuade them to redo the design of the blade
@paulie4x1
@paulie4x1 9 жыл бұрын
Inner Primate, Even after you get a knife from Busse, SP Rat, Junk Yard, you can still send your knife back and have their Custom Shop do a modification on your knife. I was only charged $30.00 to have the too gaurd taken off and they didn't charge me anything to have mine thinned down, now to me it's the most perfect knife that I love using mine for a field/camp knife, but I have no doubt I can easily use it as a survival knife, I should be so lucky to have my Modde Rodent 6 on me if I ever was up against all odds. Also long story but I bought a Blind Horse Bushcrafter I has the handle thinned down because I didn't like how the broomstick handle looked, literally it looked like a broomstick, Oh and I had it polished, it came out beautiful, it now look's like a classy Kephart Knife, anyhow the sheath it came with was a little too loose, actually dangerously loose and I almost cut myself several times from it just flopping out of the sheath. So finally I got fed up, but Blind Horse broke up. I tried contacting L T, but I got a hold with this guy and to no avail. So I went to Battle Horse and Ashley was a Charm, I defenetly will buy knives from Battle Horse especially the Tree Frog which is a almost fixed blade but it's a fokder, great design.But before that I had my BK-2 in a Spec Ops SMALL Sheath, then I found out that Ka-Bar had a BK-2 same all with the BK-2 except it's a full flat grind, but the BK-2 fits like a glove in the BK-22 sheath. Now that I has the new sheath for my Bushcrafter, so I took my Rodent 5 and it fit in the Dangler Leather Sheat the Bushcrafter came in and that fit like gkove, so I took the Small Spec Ops Sheath and guess what, my Rodent 6 fit it like a glove. So the Rodent 6 cost $206.00 plus $30.00 fir the thinning which was free and the top gaurd taken off that's $236.00 and in my honest opinion, it's a better knife than my Bravo 2 in A-2 (rolled edge), my Bravo 1 in 3V (harder to sharpen) my BK-7 hands down. Again buy or price a almost custom knife in 52100 Ballbearing Steel, just the steel without the work is expensive. and it has a no ask Lifetime Warrenty to booth.

This knife is neither tactical nor survival. Which kind of makes it both for me..like my tundra ..doesn't do anything great but does everything well. I have used my rat to do some processing on game as well since my last comment below. Also more shelters, more fires. I use it just to beat on it anytime I can...again what I said before.. I will always wish I had the 7".. . I am a bigger guy and most people won't like the weight . I bought this knife making the choice I would never break it and it would be passed down to my son.. when sharpened, it comes barely sharp which is good to put your own angle on, it has more combat use than I imagined. A bit slow from the weight but most the things I would have to fight with it are gonna be big and furry with 4 legs and only if something else went terribly wrong ,lol. This is a lifelong purchase...

For me the choil and the way they designed the knives at Swamp Rat, it's like two knife sizes in one, I never ran out of blade lenght, yet I can really choke up and use it as a smaller knife with just one knife. Swamp Rat Rodent designs are awesome, check out some Forums and see what others say that have them. One great advantage, if you don't like a Swamp Rat, see how fast you can sell yours, for almost the same price you bought yours for.

Say Heah, I don't mean to be rude. And I'm not biased, and I don't work or get paid by Busse, or the other two Sister Companies. But I have almost the complete line of the Rodents, starting with the Rodent 3, Rodent Solution, Ratmandu, my Modde Rodent 6, Rodent 7, Rodent 9 and the Rodent Rucki. I missed out on the MountainRatDu. But to be brutally honest I have all the knife I need if I was in a emergency situation and had my Rodent 9 with me. And I have reference and experience with the knives. To get a friends knife for just a little while and actually I never experienced what Aaron said about the top gaurd hurting his hand, one I had my too taken off and now that area where the top was allows my hand to have a more natural chop infact it out chop's my BK-7 and my Bravo 2 or atleast the same but tge fact the top gaurd is off it just chop's more natural. As far as price, If let's say someone thinks their too much money, and it's not for the steel your getting and the Special Busse Technology Temporing that process is more expensive, I don't know excactly how many times tgey temper the blade but it's pretty near being Austempered and it's also deferentially tempered too, that's why the toughness. Also 52100 Ballbearing Steel isn't a inexpensive steel, it's similar to 5160 but has more carbon in it. Last point, if he still didn't like it, they sell very on Forums. There Guys that know the type of knives they are and their snagged pretty fast. Because they are Semi Custom made, like mine. Thanx for understanding me, again I'm not trying to be rude, but just more of a F.Y.I. guy.

When first setting eyes on a knife it seems to me that there has to be something about it that captures a person's interest. You either like it immediately, or you don't. Difficult to put in to words what I'm trying to say. A knife needs to have character.. This Swamp Rat Rodent 6 didn't do it for me from the get go. I don't like it.

Real bushcrafters make their own sheaths... hehe. JK, I haven't done any friction sheaths or vacuum seals on anything yet. Part of me likes that they don't do a sheath, since a lot of bushcrafters like leather and then the modern survival/tactical people prefer kydex.

What the butt?! Who gives you a knife without a Sheath? That is like buying a car without tires. "Oh in order to use the knife you have to transport it without cutting yourself or slicing a hole in your gear...uh you'll have to go somewhere else for that. You can look at it in the box for now."-Bussy

Say Heah Aaron, The reason I love my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 is because of the High Saber Grind which I can put a Zero Grind on it, we'll it took 3 try's but I finally got my dream Bushcraft kKnife, I always liked a longer blade on my bushcraft knife, Finally my new one is 5 3/16th's, and a little less than 3/16th's thick, Yeah, I just opened Santa's gift he brought me in his Brown Truck, with Black G-10 handle. My first Ratmandu was a thicker Saber Vex Grind my second one was a little thinner but in the INFI Steel, this one is a 5 2/4"+, less than 3/16th's thick and a Saber Grind with a Zero Edge, it came out awesome, and it again is my all time Fav's, Mannyanna I will make my first fire and a hot cup of coffee with it, Yeah, I'm bringing my Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor range Hatchet which I put the same edge that's on my hair popping Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, and you got it, my Wicked Tough Saw, I ' let you know how it does, So far so good, being just a little bigger in both meridians makes it just a little beefed than my other two, like I said, I feel Ike I'm on a Blue Cloud, because Pink Clouds are for girls, eh heh heh, , ,

Say Heah Aaron, I'm tunning up some of my knives for some up comming trips, Yup I'm tunning up my Modified Rodent 6, I'm suprised that Swamo Rat doesn't make a already customised Rodent 6, I just had mine thinned down and the top guard taken off, It puts the Rodent 6 in a different demenssion, Infact it's like a Ratmandu on steriods, My modde Rodent 6 is definitely one of my Fav's. +TurtleWolf Pack I really do not see the problem with it. My Ontario SP10 had a traction coating... if you actually use the knife, that coating will flatten and turn out very slick. But I do agree it would be better with just a good DLC coating, that way no break in period.
@turtlewolfpack6061
@turtlewolfpack6061 9 жыл бұрын
Dan Martin I've had some powder coatings on knives that do eventually wear reasonably smooth but some really don't. The protection it provides to the steel is heavily countered by the way it retains debris, making it pretty difficult to clean the blade. I have also had some that when sharpening the knife it seemed to act like an abrasive and actually dulled the edge during the sharpening process. DLC is pretty good but so is the cheap Titanium Nitride that I've had on a lot of cheaper Chinese made knives. An expensive knife should have a good coating, or none at all-not a cast off from the automotive industry that acts like an after thought.

***** well, I don't test steel when I buy a knife but I do use seasoned pine knots! The steel I've no doubt is good but I still maintain (based on my own experience) that a properly designed handle negates the need of a choil.
