About hippos, if you camp close to a large lake or river, they're very curious and will walk through the camp to check you out. Not something you'd enjoy accidentally walking into when you need to go to the bathroom... At least they rather walk on land when the sun starts to set.

Ive never mentioned this before because it sounds crazy but when i was a kid i looked outside my front door onto my deck and saw a big black dog like carnivore, the memory is extremely vauge but i am sure of that much.
