Returning after its inaugural holding last year, 'Roads to Rail' at the Swanage Railway has grown significantly from its previous iteration. Held over the weekend of June 24th-26th, the 2022 edition would see a variety of spectacles on offer, as a number of heritage vehicles descended on the Isle of Purbeck.
This year saw the implementation of a display arena, with traction engines, classic cars and other vintage machinery taking to it over the course of the weekend; providing demonstrations to the public. The volume of trade stands had increased healthily, largely consisting of local crafts and charities. Among them, David Ensor - photographer and volunteer with Southern Locomotives Ltd - was selling prints of some of his spectacular images in order to raise funds for SLL. In addition, adjacent to the display field at Norden, U Class - 31806 was positioned on display with the cab open for members of the public to view.
On the rails, the railway were offering a three train service to supplement the event, with two steam locomotives bolstered by the Class 117 DMU. Steam services were in the capable hands of the SLL stalwarts, 34028 "Eddystone" and 34072 "257 Squadron".
