when is the main event video going to be released?
@TheSouthernerYTChannel6 сағат бұрын
When it's finished. There's a lot of raw clips to sort through and edit. And sleep to catch up on. That's without factoring in the time needed to export the video.

I wonder if Manston was intentionally dirty or was it an accident . Unusual for heritage line to turn a loco out in this condition ! Looks as if it has just come out of BR service !
@juleshathaway38943 күн бұрын
It is intentionally dirty, has been like it for a couple of years now and is proving very popular. It is not dirt it is the finished paint job so it can be cleaned and still look 1967 filthy 🤣 just how it did when it came out of BR service.
@TheSouthernerYTChannel3 күн бұрын
Intentional. When 34070 was last under overhaul in 2022, the Swanage Railway asked Southern Locomotives Ltd if they could possibly turn "Manston" out in a weathered aesthetic. A lot of work went into preparing it, with extensive rust removal/prevention taking place, while the new smoke deflectors were carefully colour matched. SLL put as much work into presenting "Manston" in a worn condition, as they have done with their pristine locomotives. SLL and SR, and other heritage railways "Manston" has visited, have then fully embraced this by letting the locomotive naturally weather. It was done purely as a matter of personal preference, with both parties wanting to try something different, while presenting the loco in an authenticly weathered condition; reminiscent of its final working days at 72A Exmouth Junction. Unusual, yes. Something different, absolutely. At the very least it's got people talking.

That is the actual paint finish so it can be washed but it will still look like that, pure 1967 appearance.

Very fitting that the Swanage get's to host these southern locos for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Portsmouth (where to ships sailed from in that area) is less than 100 miles away.
@juleshathaway38943 күн бұрын
Ships also left from Poole and Weymouth which are considerably closer. Hundreds of American troops were billeted in Swanage in the lead up.

I thought Manston looked great in its working dirty state. That's not being sarcastic, I just like to see engines as they would have been in regular working traffic. It had the number 303 on its firebox door, is that a reference to the venerable British and Commonwealth Rifle cartridge? Or just a coincidence?
@juleshathaway38942 күн бұрын
The 303 on the headcode disc on the smokebox door is the footplate crew diagram number, not a reference to the .303 calibre rifle round. The signalman and anyone else can identify when the crew signed on, who they relieve, what trains they work and any shunting that may need to be carried out and disposal and sign off times.

I lived in a village just outside of Tunbridge Wells and we had a railway cutting at the end of our garden, twice a day we had a light Bullied Pacific hauled train pass by one up one down. I variety of BB and WC were employed on this run which was a delight to this 'spotter'. The 'E' type Jaguar was never intended to be the beautiful creation history has deigned just as Bullied just wanted to make a locomotive that was easy to clean and we have a locomotive which is arguably one of the most elegant and beautiful designs. Thanks to The Southerner for the nostalgia. The effort that is employed by TS is greatly appreciated as it results in a very professional product which is a joy to view.

Brilliant video as usual. What could be better? The sound of a Bullied in the English countryside in springtime. I grew up with them, bunking of school to watch them slip start out of Tonbridge towards Hildenborough bank opposite Tonbridge East Box. Good there are so many still with us, some looking better than me for their age. All the best. Mick.
