Hallelujah (1929) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #Hallelujah
Hallelujah is a cinematic milestone: the first all-black feature from a major studio and famed director King Vidor's (The Champ, The Big Parade) first talkie. But the film surpasses its historical significance, telling a story of such profound dignity and understanding that it as fresh and moving as the day it premiered.
Directed By King Vidor
Starring Daniel L. Haynes, Nina Mae McKinney, William Fountaine

I definitely give her kudos for being the the 1st black woman signed to MGM. That was tarnished by her putting black people down in her heyday. She also did some great acting in the movies Sanders River and Pinky. She had other movies as well.

I have not seen the full movie, but Hallelujah (1929) was one of a kind in that not only was it one of only a handful of 'speaking' films produced, surrounded by silent pictures. It also was unique in that it featured a large black cast in the 1920s!!, think about that. The 1920s media was fairly new and full of racist adverts and programs on radio and in print etc. Not just in the USA but here in the UK and the rest of Europe to a lesser degree. In the USA lynching was taking place in the south and north. The KKK had the government's backing to a degree. So MGM should be so proud to have created this picture that showed the other side of the coin

@@joedanns5678 While I agree with the sentiment and point that you're making: that we're lucky to have this early representation of an all black cast directed at that specific audience at that time, I reserve my kudos to the studio, as I'm sure they were only motivated by greed and didn't want to leave a particular demographics spending money unharvested. I know that's a cynical view, and I'm sure they also wanted to provide quality parallel entertainment to an underserved populace, so that IS a good thing, I still know that they wouldn't have done it if it weren't for the money. Still, what a great document. Jim Jackson is in this movie!

The only way this was made at MGM (of all places!) was Louie B Mayer pulled a fast one on director King Vidor and afterward felt guilty. Louie B told him he could make any picture he wanted to. So he packed up a film crew and went to the South and shot Hallelujah without the suit's prying eyes looking in on him. When he came back to Culver City with the film, the suits jumped out of their collective skins upon seeing the finish film but released it anyhow, where it died a quick death and was largely forgotten for 50 years.

You are correct it wasn't until 1979 this film was found in the MGM Vaults at one point it was considered a "Lost Film" by King Vidor it was until 1989 it was shown on television when Ted Turner created the TNT Network the year before in 1988 the full uncut version wasn't shown until Ted Turner created TCM in 1994 i'm glad it's part of the Library Of Congress this is a historic piece of Black Film History

I remember buying this movie on ITunes years ago. I was in college and read about her and in different books read about her usually just a few sentences when Billie Holiday was mentioned. She got a chance but the powers that be took it away as fast as she got it. But I like this weird little movie , to me it’s her best film the rest were mostly race films that weren’t even a movies more D and E . Life is strange. Seems she disappeared without a trace and very little personal pictures seem to exsist except publicity pictures
