Regarding Neil's health. There are several hints that he's ill. If you go with him to the lighthouse in the beginning, you can see that his health bar isn't full during the RPG fight with the squirrel. Then of course the lies about the painkillers. And then there is the moment at the fair. If you talk to the fortune teller, Neil says "Good or bad, I'm screwed either way." implying, that he might be terminally ill. His snarky comments seem to be his coping mechanism.
@SwankyBox8 жыл бұрын
+kuh punkt - Very interesting! I forgot about the dialogue at the fair, so thanks for bringing that up. I definitely think there is something going on with his health and that he may be terminally ill. It makes me wonder what desire he would want fulfilled by memory alteration, or if Eva is doing it against his will for some reason. That is, assuming that is what is taking place in the holiday episodes. I wonder if anything has to do with having a crush either. It makes me wonder if Neil is dying and never got to express his feelings to Eva, so Eva as a parting gift changes his memories so that he is involved in more functions with him, and then eventually end up together. The concept is a tad creepy, but it makes me wonder. Although I guess when it boils down to it, removing a relationship (River) and adding a relationship are in the same ballpark.

So, in Finding Paradise, sometime in the start of Act II when Neil goes to get his pills from the car, he sees again the bike that he comments on at the start of the game. He says "Wait a minute--" like he's about to recall seeing it before, but then there's this white flash, and he says "Huh, that's a nice bike. Sure wish I had one like it..." Neil is definitely losing memories.

But that's just a lie, it never really happened. Their lives were still miserable, boring, sad or disappointing and nothing can erase that. Now everyone else still knows, but that one person decided to forget about everything and everyone to die happy.

my vote? Neil's dying. Slowly, but surely. Neil may be wanting to alter his own memories involving something horrible he did to his family. Something he wishes he had forgotten. The "2nd" Neil would have to exist to stop whatever Neil 1 was trying to accomplish. It's possible that Eva in the end is actually Eva 2. Eva 1 went to her sister's home. Eva 2 made a pleasant memory for Neil that one year. What we see is a memory being altered in front of us.

I don't think we could be in any of their memories. In the beginning of To the Moon, when someone is supposed to have Sarah and Tommy show them to the basement. We are able to choose who goes down there. If we were truly in a memory, we would only be able to follow whoever's memory we were in. And we don't follow only one doctor throughout the story. Neil is gone at the beginning of Act 2 when Eva is exploring, and Eva is gone during the whole mindf*ck when Neil is trying to keep her from removing River (unless you count the Zombievas). I'm sure something bigger is going on, but I don't think it's that.
@StarlitSwamp8 жыл бұрын
You're right : if we always got to control the same character, we could easily deduce that everything could take place in their mind, but the changes of perspective make it very confusing. They would've had to somehow combine their memories (real or rewritten) to make all of this happen only in either Neil or Eva's head, which makes no sense. But considering the weird glitches and contradictions, it can't be just an objective outsider's POV either... I hate being aware that I'm missing something !
@kuhpunkt8 жыл бұрын
There's a moment in To the Moon where Memory-John asks Neil, what he is. "You're merely an algorithm..." And Memory-John asks him: "Is this really what I am?" Memory-John is/was not aware that he's not real. It seems real to him. From his perspective, Neil and Eva can just appear out of nowhere and disappear into thin air, when they actually just enable/disable visibility. This is what Eva could have seen in Minisode 2 when she was in the car. She might have just been an algorithm that saw the real Eva appear in front of her on the street. Real Eva noticed that algorithm-Eva saw her and disabled visibility.

+kuh punkt - I agree with you 100% on this. Sorry if the video didn't make it clear, but that was my intentions for this part. It makes me wonder about Neil's involvement in all of it too though, unless it was simply Eva who altered the memory and cut the power in the office.

+L16htW4rr10r - They have complete control over the memory though. It would be no different than the time she used it to rearrange the school halls, add zombies, and scatter traps about. If this is just a memory of what was happening, then they could surely defy the logic of the power supply log by simply replacing it with whatever they wanted. The world is just putty in their hands to some extent.

Hypothesis 1: If Neil use pain killer, it's because he tried to use the machine on himself which is potentially dangerous as it cause memories contradiction, so it had painful side effect. Hypothesis 2: He try to use the machine on himself to change his memories about something wrong he made (linked to his family) Hypothesis 3: At the end of the second minisode, Eva doesn't look older. Maybe she used the machine to change her memory about this christmas night, where she left Neil alone at the office.

What really happened during the christmas minisode: a) Eva went to her sister's with the company car. Neil stayed behind to use his machine. The Eva that came back is a memory Eva, while the Neil that used the emergency shutdown is also a memory Neil (presumably to stop Neil from using the machine). After Neil turns the power back on, he runs into memory Eva, and hits her with the broom. b) Eva didn't use the company car because Neil wanted to use it to go home. Eva waited for her sister to pick her up. Neil used the emergency shutdown to turn off the building (such a Neil thing to do), and left. The Eva that gave Neil a present (the recorder) is a memory Eva; while the Neil that received the present and that didn't say anything about the company car, is also a memory Neil. This memory Neil stayed behind to use the machine. Real life events (Neil shutting down the power) influenced memory Neil's actions. After memory Neil turns the power back on, he runs into Eva (not a memory), who was waiting for her sister, and hits her with the broom. Basically, during the dinner, we have a combination of either "memory Eva + Neill *or* "Eva + memory Neil"; depending on who is trying to use the machine to alter whose memory.

I don't think the second minisode could have been either Neil's or Eva's memories because (if we're looking through either of their POVs, which we would in a typical memory), we couldn't have seen Neil alone in his locked office or Eva alone in her car. We would have only seen what the person has seen. I propose a third culprit. Please hear me out. (This is copied from a post I wrote in another forum on this exact topic.) The intended purpose of the machine, as we’ve seen in “To the Moon” is to hook both the doctors and the patient up to the machine, so that the doctors have access to the patient’s memory. The way I think this works is that the doctors log in to the machine with a username and password, like logging in to an online server. A required log in would make sense, since it would prevent just anyone from messing with the machine. Their consciousness are then transferred into the patient’s head, and the machine renders the doctors as apparitions or avatars that can now interact with the patient’s memories. No clue if I’m right on this. Eva and Neil are obviously using the machine for something other than its intended purpose. (They have to do it in secret, after all. And it looks experimental if Neil has to try it thirty times.) They’re hooking themselves up to the machine without a patient, or in other words, without someone’s memories to dive into. What if Eva and Neil aren’t trying to dive into anyone’s memories? What if the machine allows them to project their consciousness into the actual, real life world and make things happen? Kind of like turning yourself into a poltergeist, while you sit safe and sound in the privacy of your apartment or office? You could, say, infiltrate the Sigmund Corp office and shut off the power. Or you could simply “turn off visibility” and spy on people? Or investigate an incident to get to the bottom of what happened? What if that’s why Eva and Neil have tried hooking themselves up to the machine in secret? What if they already suspect that someone has been illicitly using the machine in this way, and are trying to catch this person? Let’s consider the possibility of this unknown third culprit. If you were up to no good, and you knew Eva and Neil were on to you, what would you do? Sabotage them. If this third culprit has Neil’s login info and could possibly be watching Eva (See: her diary), this person could very well have Eva’s login info as well. He or she could have stolen one of these machines, used Eva’s login info to access the machine, and that would cause the machine to render their consciousness as Eva’s image. Stealing the machine doesn’t sound that hard, after all. During the second minisode, Eva’s brother-in-law asks about security, and someone (Eva or Neil, I forget which) mentions that security is really light. What if that’s all it took? The memory device sees a person using the machine, sees that this person inputted Eva’s username and password, thinks “This person must be Eva,” and renders this person’s avatar as Eva’s image. How else could the computer know that the person using it is NOT Eva? It would’ve been a brilliant plan on the criminal’s part. He/she could very easily stop Neil from investigating the memory machine by shutting off the power, while simultaneously framing Eva for it by doing it in her image. No one would be any the wiser, because this person would be safe and sound in their own private lair. We know that Sigmund Corp has a lot of dissenters, after all. It’s not too far-fetched to think that one of them might be a bit on the extreme side…

@cocoacoconuts244 жыл бұрын
@@wojciechmuras553 There are 2 possibilities: either it's real life or it's a memory. The reason why I'm ruling out memory is because it would have to come from an omniscient person who has seen both Eva and Neil alone, which doesn't sound likely. Besides, what would be the criminal's motive in altering a memory? Nothing would've changed in real life, so why would they bother? It makes more sense to me that the criminal is using the machine to do something (we don't know what yet) in real life. As for their motive for doing that, the games have been building up this question of "Should Sigmund Corp exist?" "Is it right to alter the memories of the dying?" Judging by the protestors throwing tomatoes at the building, it looks like a lot of people would say no. To me, it's not too far-fetched to imagine one of those dissenters would take it to the extreme and take down the entire company using their own technology against them. (And on a side note, wouldn't that be a fitting finale for the series - for someone to try and take down the entire company?)

After watching another playthrough of this game just a few minutes ago, I noticed some odd things I didn't notice on my own playthrough.And yeah, they might just be mere coincidences but since we're talking about a game which deals with altering memories, they are at least worth taking into concideration. First of all, some small tidbits of dialoug that kinda stood out to me this time: Neill was talking about his memories with his grandfather, while Eva was dropping hints of memories with her and Neill (Helping him cheating the entrance exams, "You of all people should know that" after Johnny invited River to the movie). That may not seem so strange, but the only times Neill kinda talks about memories of him and Eva together, are events that happend during the game(Car-Crash, Pushing him of the lIghthouse), while Eva only talks abou memories we haven't seen, as well as not talking about memories only involving her. While this simply could be because of their personalitys it still strikes me as kinda odd, again especially given the whole Memory altering shenanigans. And one little thing you kinda missed, or at least did not mention in the video, was the fact that two Neills could be seen for a brief moment on the bridge before the space shuttle took of. And since I think that entering and altering your own memories would kinda result in a paradox similar to the grandfather-paradox with timetravels, it makes me belief that at this particular moment, we are in Eva's memories, not Neill's. That again would imply the exact opposite in the Holiday Minisode where we get to see two Eva's. My conclusion on that, at least based on the clues and facts we have as of now, is, that in fact, both of them are dieing, and they are diving into each others minds at the same time, but trying to achieve different results. But at the end, all we can do for now, is wait for the release of Finding Paradise, and see how the story continues. Sorry for any kind of spelling- or grammarmistakes, but english is not my mothertongue

The thing about Neil’s parents being dead and Eva not knowing really really hits home for me. There’s no doubt in my mind memories can be self aware. Eva showed us a glimpse of this when she explains how River still ended up with Johnny. She explain it something to the affect of it is still up to “her” if she rejoins Johnny later in his life after being corrected out. There’s no gurantee there as she makes her own decisions based on Johnny’s wiki of knowledge(? I forget what the actual terminology was). Although if Neil knows something Eva doesn’t know this should mean this isn’t strictly Eva’s memories, it should be Neil’s.

But we know Neil is sick right? That initial squirrel fight shows he is lacking HP which isn't the case if you play as Eva. Then the red flash shows that he's in pain and in a simulation. It makes the most sense to me that he is dying and they're using the machine to artificially give him more life, future memories he won't have time to experience. He keeps his same job because he just wanted to live out his life but couldn't do that in the real world.

There’s always the possibility that Neil and Eva are at war within each other’s memory (or perhaps just Neil’s). Even though I vouched for the power supply turning off for other reasons, it could also be that Neil entered Eva's memory and shut it off preemptively. What are your thoughts?

07:33 THAT IS THE MOST MAKE SENSE THING EVER. 09:53 Finally someone mention this thing purposes! As for what I was thinking, there is should be another question we should asked ourself. If Eva is the one who try to alter Neil's memory, why is she the one who lost her memory? Except she didnt lost it and Im misunderstand it. And what is the purpose of the pills Neil eats? What if Eva is trying to alter either her own memories, or Neils memory when he is not dying? The memory!Neil notice this and want to go into her memories to stop this process. But of course it continues on failling because he is just a memory either. And because she or he wanted to try to alter someone memories who is not death yet, their true memories keep clashing with each other. It would probably why he needs the pills too. He doesnt want anyone to alter his brain, and the struggle harms his brain. Food for thoughts here.

I personally think that the events of the holiday special were Eva rewriting her own memories to forget the fact that she left Neil alone in his office, and that the thing with Neil and the painkillers in the base game was because Neil tried using the device on himself before Eva perfected the technique. Mainly because 1. The theory in this video makes my head hurt, 2. This theory has the potential to ruin the best ending in gaming history (To the Moon), and 3. Eva is alone in her house, key word, alone, with no patient hooked up to it, meaning she is probably rewriting her own memories. Though I might be missing something because I've never played Finding Paradise.

I think the best guesses to take out of this are: 1) Neil is the patient we'll meet last, due to the pills. 2) Both Neil and Eva seem to have, at one point, tampered with their own memories. (Quite possibly _why_ Neil is dying; that process isn't good for you.) Aaand that's really it. Any guesses as to their motivations for tampering with their own memories are pretty futile since there's no way to tell Memory Eva/Neil from Reality Eva/Neil.

Interesting speculations. My belief is that this is all some kind of bleeding effect, which is why eva sees herself in real life (not in memory) for example. The biggest question here is: what is sigmund corp and why is the world angry at them? What if their machine is being used for nefarious reasons? What if doctors who have used the machines to do good have gone ballistic for example? And its actually some form of brainwashing tool (which is technically true anyways) Onto Neil: he knows this. He's been fighting against the effects. Hes been hacking and lying and fighting against sigcorp to find out what is actually going on. We see eva using the machine in the episodes as well. Or used on... but if its not supposed to be used on still going to be alive tomorrow people then what is actually going on? I think Neil is trying to SAVE THE WOOOORLD! Cuz he would. And if not for the world he would save it for Eva, his best (and probably only) friend.

Just the very existence of memory rewrite technology is enough for mass protests against the company to materialize. Rewriting memories is by nature an extremely ethically dubious process. You can see in Finding Paradise that families can be potentially be torn apart through one’s choice to use the tech. There are also implications of how the technology can be abused, such as invasion of privacy for unwilling participants and brainwashing. Corporate and political espionage actors would have huge interests in utilizing this tech. Literally no piece of info is safe anymore once this tech became established. Used on a large scale, it’s great way to subjugate and control entire populations ala 1984. False memories = false info. TL;DR This tech is capable of robbing you of your sentience and you’ll never know otherwise.

A question: have you read Eva's diary entry from the second minisode? It says something along the lines of, she feels like someone is watching/following her. Man, so many questions, pretty much no answers. I guess that's Kan's style though, maybe in case he decides to change something later on (like how he always overshoots his deadlines, so now he just never gives specific dates) so it can still make sense. Or he's just withholding as much information as possible so he can shock us when it actually is revealed, but we can still see clues tracing back (like in To The Moon itself, and in the way he's showing off Finding Paradise right now).

What I thought when I finished the game is that they were in Neil's memories and Neil was the one that was dying and his final wish is to help more people have their wishes fulfilled. they didn't succeed with Johnny's wish but Neil and Eva went back to make sure they did. in the next game they will make sure they fulfill that persons wish because they didn't before. I am probably wrong but that is what I thought of when I finished it.

There's two Neils in Two to the Moon at the Shuttle blasting off scene. I thought it was a glitch originally, but something more is definitely going on here and there.
@kimm9208 жыл бұрын
There's also a part in the game To The Moon when they are at the bridge watching the space ship take off, where there are two Neils in the scene: the one with Eva and the one somewhere in the crowd of people. I haven't seen that when I first played the game but when I watched a gamer played it I saw it. Kinda gave me goosebumps, too.
@SwankyBox8 жыл бұрын
+Kim Mallari - I heard somewhere that the second Neil in that scene is actually a glitch and not intentional. Within RPG Maker programs, in order to achieve custom animations you have to swap out character graphics constantly to do that. Sometimes it is easier creating a separate "character" that isn't the one you control to change the graphics with. I imagine he forgot to keep the current Neil (the one you're actually controlling) to invisible for the full duration of that cutscene, and that is what we are seeing. Then again though, I could be wrong. I just know I've accidentally done that before too, so I instantly thought of that right away.

Wait maybe they never did fulfill the wish of Johnny and Neil wishes that he did fulfill it which brings us this game where he alters his memories to make him think that he did fulfill Johnny's wish
@nimeshghelani8 жыл бұрын
Another thing which stands out and confirms something wrong with Neil is the conversation he had with Johnny's last memory, when the duo go back to him to see if anything changed (after hitting that memory block). Neil was definitely out of character when trying to explain things to that "memory", instead of freezing him/not giving shit (which was the expected behaviour from him). A lot of the mystery relied on what that modified machine does? Seeing both Eva and Neil using the modified device, it can be concluded that only a single person is required to operate the device (unlike the older device which requires a doctor and patient). I just can't come up with a possible theory about it which stays consistent with other facts.
@TheNJfusionguy8 жыл бұрын
On the subject with Neil being a memory, I'm surprised you didn't mention the part in the interlude where Johnny asks Neil if that's all he is. And instead of answering, Neil just considers it for half a moment, and then leaves.

I do have a idea for a undertale theory. What if frisk isn't human? Think about it. Most humans have their souls last after death, but frisks heart breaks as soon as you hit 0 hp. Also, he doesn't really look too human (the former is stronger than the latter).

The weird thing is that the side-stories imply that he's not the only one who has had his memory tampered with. I don't even _know_ what to think at that point.

+L'Inserviente - I just assumed it was a mistake in RPG Maker. I used to make games in the past, and often times I would forget to turn off player graphics when I had the character move elsewhere (in this case, Neil climbing up by Eva). I immediately thought of that upon witnessing it in game.
@bruschetta63028 жыл бұрын
SwankyBox Well, that's a pretty lucky bug if that theory is true!
@kuhpunkt8 жыл бұрын
"It's not them" was a response to Eva's question, if they did something wrong. Like it's their fault that Neil doesn't speak to them anymore. The "It's not them" means that it's nothing they did.
@SwankyBox8 жыл бұрын
+kuh punkt - I debated this back and forth several times and I couldn't say one way or another what his intentions were. The way that someone would naturally answer that series of questions in a conversation would be to normally just say no before anything else, and then address the first part. I think the phrase "it's not them" is a odd way of stating things, as I think I would expect a different type of response to the question (or at least a different choice of words). I could of course just be reading into it too much. There's always the chance that Neil is calling his parents, who he cut ties with a long time ago, and wanted to wish them a happy holiday. Something I wonder about though is what happens when someone's memory is altered slightly and then they dive into a memory that references that alteration. If memories are clashing in the user's present mind, and they encounter an incomplete topic within a memory, how does this internal battle play out? In normal life it causes someone to not be able to function properly, but what happens when the damaged topic comes to play within a memory before being fully instilled in their mind?
@kuhpunkt8 жыл бұрын
*There's always the chance that Neil is calling his parents, who he cut ties with a long time ago, and wanted to wish them a happy holiday.* That's what I would go with. Who else could it even be? And he/she called him Neil and son. I think there's no need to make things more complicated than they already are :D I guess his parents don't/didn't know about his health issues, too and maybe he tried to reconnect with them because of this. Hard to say. *Something I wonder about though is what happens when someone's memory is altered slightly and then they dive into a memory that references that alteration.* That's an interesting question. Maybe that's something that will come up with a patient in the sequels. I mean, there needs to be some kind of conflict - otherwise there's no drama and you can't bring up beta-blockers in every story. Memories are always flawed to a certain degree anyway... so visiting those flawed/altered memories could change a lot.

Because she said that she was going to befriend a lighthouse, meaning being able to communicate with it, with someone else. What she tells to John under the stars about the lighthouses not being able to speak to each other represents her illness and her inability to communicate. She wants to build the house near the lighthouse to trigger Johnny’s memories of their meeting and she can only achieve this trough showing Johnny the importance of the lighthouse. This is ultimately an attempt to finally escape from her illness by being able to communicate with Johnny. Sorry for the confused explaination and mostly for the bad English, which is not my first language.

Hmm... fun video, but it feels like you might be overcomplicating things a bit. I always assumed Neil was terminally ill, and that perhaps his experiments with the machine were the cause; that in the events of the holiday episode, the power is shut off to prevent whatever actually happened to Neil because of his experiment.
@FabiolaFaby8 жыл бұрын
..buuut if he's really dying and this is a memory, what is the point in preventing him from doing his experiments? Even if he doesn't remember he did them, he still has in real life and thus this won't solve his problem...
