I realized that laughing it off means "laugh away the pain" Undyne laughs when she's fading away, Toriel laughs when you kill her and by so monster it says "You laugh so hard tears roll down your face"

and also Mettaton, when he casts you into the 'dungeon' with the multi-colored tile maze. He says "I'm so filled with grief I can't stop laughing" I'm beginning to think that laughter is a common coping mechanism in the underground. Undyne laughs as she dies, Toriel laughs as she realizes who she should have protected before her death, Mettaton references this coping mechanism like it's the default response, and sans hides his depression through humor. The entire underground tries to smile and laugh, in spite of their pain and tragedy, because, in the words of one of the minor characters... "We can't do anything, so why be morose about it?"

The only thing that confuses me is, in genocide route, asriel immediately tells you that you are Chara, AND you have a STOLEN soul. BUT when you get to the ending, Chara 'asks' you for your soul to bring back the world. In the game it is said that a human cannot absorb a human soul. So Chara cannot be a human.

+lightsen - It sort of goes along the lines of being a demon as well, since a soul can be sold to a demon or devil (in a figure of speech sense). And since humans can't absorb other human souls like you said, it leaves a lot to be interpreted about why a human would want to acquire another human's soul then. Unless Chara's intentions were not to absorb it, but more so to prove dominance over it.

+victini pokeparkroad - The dialogue about Chara being a demon is the second genocide route's ending. I included bits and pieces of it in the video and make note of it at 5:09. As for the repeatedly destroying the world part, while I didn't feature the dialogue in the video visually, I sort of believed it to be snowballed in with the part about Chara being bored with the world. In my eyes, their analysis of your behavior was that of confusion because they don't see the point in repeating what has been done. They find it entertaining regardless though, so they might as well stick around for the ride for the next world. However, I suppose that would only hold true if your interpretation of the purpose behind Chara's behavior aligns with that.

... What I have as a theory is kinda crazy. So Chara, the first fallen human, raised with Asriel under the care of Asgore and Toriel Dreemurr was a normal child. Possibly abused or orphaned on the surface, they were left with a deep 'hatred' for humanity which is really just depression. Finding a family, Chara forgets their depression until a misread recipie causes them to send Asgore into a near-death sickness. This reincarnates Chara's depression at a higher level, believing it is their fault, they do what most people do when they want to hide sadness. Smile and laugh so the ones they love stay happy. ~Time Skip~ Asriel finds the camera and begins asking Chara about their past. Chara refuses to answer, but instead does a 'creepy face' that scares Asriel. This may be Chara's depression showing through, and Asriel being an oblivious monster, takes the fake yet creepy smile as a scary face. Then Chara remembers about Asgore's situation with buttercups when Asriel mentions them being able to laugh it off and requests the camera to be turned off so their parents could not listen in on the conversation. ~Time Skip~ A few months later, Chara has torn up their internal organs with the poisonous buttercup. Eating the flower puts them into a comatose state. This had been the hidden conversation Asriel and Chara had. Chara was to poison themselves, die, and let Asriel take their soul to get six more and break the barrier. Sadly, in the state of mind they are in, they talk about golden flowers of their village, and Asriel takes that as a tell that Chara wants to see them. After crossing the barrier with Chara's soulless corpse, humans see and attack the young monster believing he murdered the human child. This fuels Chara's rage towards humanity. ~Fallen Down~ More children fall down. Not a single one had the determination Chara had. Then, Frisk falls. Young little determined Frisk. Their determination is strong enough to awaken Chara. Chara then proceeds to help Frisk through the underground. When they begin to kill, Chara grows confused, and ends up helping. Sadly, this twists Chara's mind, and after killing Flowey, they remind Frisk just who was helping them. Chara explains that they are the feeling players get. That they are the summoned demon, but truly, they don't believe this. They are a confused kid who sat through limbo after watching their brother be mercilessly murdered by humans. Chara wants to erase the world, so the player learns a lesson. They want to teach the player that every action has a consequence.

heres why, its not really my theory but it sums up my points. You did not "teach them" that killing is okay. In fact, Chara helps you every way they can in the genocide route. They give you the kill count, both in the stat screen and save points as early as Snowdin. They would even go as far as calling Papyrus "Forgettable" and Monster Kid "Free EXP". Also, they are not corrupted by the LV either. Some proof to this is that if you kill 36 Knight Knights in the Core (There being 40 enemies) that will bring you to LV 15, even if you don't kill anyone else in the game. This proves that Chara doesn't care about LV. The genocide ending will not occur until EVERY. SINGLE. THING. is killed. Finally bringing you to LV 19 and all monsters possible are killed in the Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, and Hotland. Only then, will Chara reveal themself. If Chara was really "taught" that killing is okay, then they wouldn't have required that you killed everyone. More evidence to prove that Chara wants to destroy monsterkind is that if you kill everyone in Snowdin, but spare Snowdrake everytime you pass him, the SAVE point will say "The comedian got away." and the genocide run will be aborted. Which proves that Snowdrake is a special enemy and requires to be killed, even if you got the kill count reqired. Also, in Waterfall before you get to the bridge, Chara will advise you to go back and kill everyone before continuing because of the changed battleground scene. These actions are not of someone who was "taught" that killing is okay, these actions are from someone that wanted to be The Angle of Death and kill everyone in the Underground and destroy the timeline. Just Snowdrake in itself is enough evidence to prove that Chara is out for blood- er... dust. Since Snowdrake is a random encounter, you will randomly meet him if you do not kill him. If you get the kill count you need (and therefore "teaching" Chara) but you spare Snowdrake everytime, you will abort genocide because unlike the rest of the random encounter monsters, there is only one Snowdrake, and it is required you kill it.

In my mind, Chara was a very damaged and traumatized child. They ran away from their village and sought to commit suicide upon Mount Ebbot. However being taken in by the Dreemurrs caused him to grow attached to monsters. Thus began his misguided effort to destroy both the barrier and the humans who hurt him. Later, when Frisk arrived Charas essence latches onto Frisk. Then it is the Player who decides the outcome. If the Player goes towards the Pacifist Route then Charas soul is pacified and simply laid to peace. However if the Player goes the genocide route the soul of Chara, who is still that of a traumatized child reaches a breaking point. Seeing Frisk and the Player mercilessly kill monsters and his "mother" Toriel causes the soul of Chara to become corrupt by not only the Players actions but also the accumulated LV. Chara then becomes a demon and takes advantage of the Players actions to escape the underground.

it was LV that corrupted chara, the stat menu says chara not frisk. She absorbs the LV and as sans says 'the more LV you gain, the easier it is to kill. The more you get disconnected.

After you finish the Pacifist route completely, and the 6 main characters are standing in a circle you can walk all the way back to the ruins. If you go to the very first room of the game after defeating Asriel, he is standing over the flowers that you originally fell on. If you talk to him, he tells you that Chara hated humanity and fell down the mountain to kill themself. So yes, they did attempt suicide.

It's actually the opposite, Frisk killing monster is what corrupts Chara, not Chara corrupting Frisk. Chara says "with YOUR guidance I realised the purpose of my reincarnation" which means that Frisk killing everybody made Chara think that he was reincarnated to get more power, and if you go by the Chara narrator theory you'll realise that Chara got reincarnated the moment Frisk fell on the flower bed and since they were so confused they decided to let Frisk guide them instead of controlling Frisk by themselves.

Honestly, portraying Chara as the great threat in Undertale is unfair. In the Genocide route, he says that he realizes why whe came back when you start killing monsters, prompting him to gain in LV and boosting the stats. So what I'm saying is: the Darkness behind Chara? It's you. The player. You're the one who turned him into a demon. Because in the end, in the genocide route...you are the bad guy who decided "let's just kill everyone". Even Sans noticed it. Who do you think "the anomaly" was? Chara was no angel in his living...but YOU made him a demon.

I honestly think that Chara ISN'T the "evil character". Now, now, I have evidence. Actually ALOT of evidence... *You are the influence to Chara's "evil".* Yes, you, the player. After all, WE are the people who are pressing that "fight" button. We are the ones telling her, pushing her to grab that knife. At the end of the game, Chara states (Not exact same words cause I can't remember the exact words...) 'Oh? You want to go back? After all you've done? Since were you the one in control?'. What Chara said is true but we did have the power of influence. After you play the Genocide route again, you see Chara again. She begs you to do the special "Pacifist route". Sure, after you do what Chara wants, at the end, Chara scribbles over all the characters on the picture, she is actually serving justice. After doing the Genocide route 2 times (or more), she is giving you want you deserved. You killed everyone's families, friends, monsters, you deserved something at least. Most players feel that oh no what has Chara done? No, what have YOU done? This world didn't do anything to you. Actually, it saved you from dying (Starvation and fall) So, why do you have to kill every single creature you see? Note for all paths (Genocide, Pacifist, Neutral). It doesn't matter if it's red text or not, she's always narrator. Chara even knows how the player is! She knows that we think we are above consequences. Chara's story is still a bit clouded. It starts off by Chara trying to kill herself? Again, I'm not sure. She lands on flowers and Asriel finds her. She asks for the fallen human's name and she joins Asriel's family. Fast forwards and Chara and Asriel backs Asgore a pie. They put buttercups as one if the ingredients, Thus posioning him. They children after all! And Asriel was helping Chara so why isn't he one of the "evil characters"?. After that discovery, Chara realized that if she died, the border could be broken. She was a human after all. So, she posioned herself so Asriel could absorb the 6 now 7 humans souls, thus be able to break the border. Well, that was their plan. Asriel made it up to the surface, Chara still with her and advising her, Asriel walked towards a small village. The humans, seeing this monster with a dead child in it's hands, assumed that the monster had killed the child. So, they drove him out. Chara told Asriel to fight back because she wanted to show Asriel how cruel humans really are, thus driving her to falling down the mountain (I theorize). But Asriel gave Mercy. But the humans did not. They drove them down, back into the monster world. So, they placed Chara's body down below the golden patch of flowers where they had met her. When Frisk fell down, her/his determination was so that Chara was brought back, thus making herself useful by giving tips and building the child and acting as the narrator. Anyways, if you want more evidence I got more. Just tell me if you want to see it. I guess I should wrap this up. So those were some of my reasons and explanations to why Chara is not "Evil". So yeah. Debate all ya want but I'm sticking to my theory. Sorry this was so long... For more evidence search: Judgement boy who is the true villian of undertale? None of that is really evidence. You string together facts from the game, then jump to conclusions. But this is what all the Chara fans do. This is what we know. Chara hated humankind. All of them, and this may well include mom and dad. Even after poisoning Asgore with buttercups, which is a really nasty affliction by the way, what did she learn? Not "hey, don't mess with these flowers like that." No, "they're deadly." What does she do even after spending a happy life with the Dreemurrs and particularly her new step-brother Asriel? Plots her suicide. When she dies and merges with Asriel, what does she do? Tries to gain control so she can kill all the humans. Asriel resists and stops her, even as he's being killed. Yes, we are the ultimate villain of Undertale, should we decide to go on a killing spree. The game won't play itself. But Chara is not a nice, normal girl in any way, shape or form. And this is the real evidence.

Is Chara really evil? Whe Chara fell she was probably fell because she wanted to commit suicide, she was being bullied . She fell and got found by Asriel. He took her Chara to the Dreemurs and was loved. She baked a pie using buttercups and poisoned Asgore. She felt bad and "laughed it off". Most characters do this when they are sad or scared. She poisoned herself to let Asriel absorb her soul. She wanted to see the buttercup flowers in the overworld. He got there and was accused of killing Chara. He went back to the underground and died where you first start out in the game. Where Chara died buttercup flowers grew there. When frisk fell Chara was awokken by Frisks determination and was now a ghost following Frisk on her adventure. She saw everyone she loved. She gave you descriptions of all the characters when you were in battle. But if you choose the genocide route she be silent for most of the battles like Sans, Undyne, and mom and dad. Chara was never a murderer, the only person she killed was herself. Frisk was the one making the decision to kill everybody while Chara is just hopelessly watching while all off her friends and family were being killed right before her. She was around 10 most likely and didn't know how to respond to all of that confusion.

On top of that, they even state themselves that they don't like the players actions. When you recreate the world and do another genocide run, they state: "You're wracked with a perverted sentimality." Key word is "perverted". That means they don't like your actions and choices. Also, THEY are the one punishing you with doing that run. They jumpscare you and then corrupt your game so you will never get a happy ending. In other words, they aren't the bad guy. Chara was the good guy all along, you just have to look deep enough.

My theory on Chara's relation to Frisk *Pacifist Run= Truly Frisk. this is Frisk acting as their truest self. with no influence from Chara. a hint to this (if I remember correctly) is that your name is only revealed and you are only called 'Frisk' in the pacifist run. I really feel this was a hint left by toby along with "despite everything, it is still you" *Any Neutral Run= Frisk is being 'influenced' my Chara. almost like having a ghost or demon whispering in your ear, or taking temporary being taken over. like, maybe Chara's soul is still human at this point so they are unable to steal Frisk's soul (more about soul steal below) *Merciless/Genocide Run- Total Chara possession. As stated by Flowey in the beginning of the genocide run "you're Chara right?" and "i have a plan to become more powerful, even more powerful than you and your STOLEN SOUL" this means that Chara has stolen Frisk's soul. but I believe this also means that Chara is also no longer a human but rather a demon (like this video stated) because accorded to Alphys's Journal entries, humans can not steal other human soul. Same with monster being unable to steal other monster souls. That is why Flowey could steal both human AND monster souls at the end of the pacifist run, because he was neither monster nor human...he was a demon...flower...thing...lol. anyway, it's also hinted that Chara is not a human or monster based off of how Sans and Asgore address them. Sans stated "it would make my brother really happy if you were a human, so I would really appreciate if you could keep PRETENDING TO BE ONE" and Asgore says "i'm sorry but what kind of monster are you? sorry but I can not tell." this pretty clearly implying that they are neither human nor monster. now again, this is only MY THEORY so I could be wrong but I do think I have some pretty solid evidence to support it. but what do you guys think?

Well the question about Chara falling into the Underground--Unlikely that it was out of suicidal intent. Chara canonically trips over a branch into the Underground. Upon their landing, they also call out for help, likely out of desperation. If they truly wanted to die, they probably would've just stopped trying and accepted their fate. Another thing is that Asgore himself compares Frisk to Chara, saying they have the same "look of hope" in their eyes.

dazai-san I think that Chara climbed the mountain because of the legend, but they didn't actually know that the hole was supposed to be the reason why people should disappear, and that's why they tripped. Don't forget that Asriel tells us the reason why Chara _climbed_ the mountain, not the reason why they fell, so Chara probably climbed the mountain because they thought they will be dead soon because of the legend, but they didn't know about the hole.

The 7 chakra 'centres' are Spirituality (purple), Intuition ( Dark Blue) , Communication (Light Blue), Love (Green) , Power (Yellow), Sexuality (Orange) and Survival (Red). Coincidentally, these are also the representative colours of all the 7 fallen human's souls. Toby Fox did change the meanings (Bravery Justice Integrity Kindness Perseverence and Patience) to suit the game. The mystery surrounding Chara can probably be solved if we delve deeper into what this all means.

I think what is left of chara's soul floods into frisk when they fall. Chara's body is buried under these flowers. If frisk is an evil child, then chara returns as that, the levels and numbers dictate who chara grows into. In pacifist their soul doesn't gain power, but still conscience. It calls for Asriel, your best friend. but they cannot do anything, the only route with asriel coming back is where chara has no control. maybe that's why they want frisk's soul? to do pacifist and end things right. the chara flash thing at the end of the game was most likely them waking up, and I theorize going to find asriel.

I think Chara is a personiphication of Player's decisions in game. Players often are agressive and cruel in game worlds. I agree... also If you think about it, chara isn't able to make you killed is actually quite helpful, for instance translating froggit and giving helpful suggestions during battles. Notice: asgore got sick and Chara laughed it off, this is also a way to deal with pain like how Toriel laughs when you kill her and sans with all his jokes. so she obviously felt for asgore. I think when the humans attacked them, the reason why chara tried to take over and fight back was not because she wanted to kill all the humans, it was because she didn't want asriel to die with her. also on a genocide route, realize this, it was the player that was pushing the fight button not chara and i think she got a very bad influence from someone (frisk/player) and when frisk fell into the underground it awakened chara's soul from death and she was stuck with frisk weather she wanted to be or not. she also hesitated before killing flowey and it was the player who pressed enter to kill flowey. If they had reset then and there, their files would've been fine. P.S. we can all agree chara is a girl, right?

From my understanding, Chara('s spirit?) isn't malevolent unless the player makes them so. In their words, "I was so confused. Our plan had failed, hadn't it? Why was I brought back to life? ...You. With your guidance. I realized the purpose of my reincarnation. Power." With your guidance. Your guidance being what you, the player, do during your run. By using your power to murder everyone in a genocide run, you... corrupt Chara into thinking that was why they were brought back in the first place. They begin to seek power, hence why they begin possessing Frisk. Which would explain why they DON'T try anything funny during a pacifist/neutral run. They have no desire to seek power because you haven't exposed them to that level of nefariousness. If anything, during a true pacifist run, you show them how to love and BE loved, giving them somewhat of a happy ending. I mean, I'm not saying Chara wasn't a messed up kid. Interesting comment, I'd like to put in my input if you don't mind. I couldn't find any evidence to support Chara ever WAS brought back to life in True pacifist. What revives them is the murdering of countless innocent monsters, the gaining of LOVE. If Frisk never gains any LOVE, it's safe to assume Chara never even awakens from within Frisk. If they were present, you'd think they would have stirred inside Frisk, at least when seeing Asriel again, but that never happens. I'd say Chara in genocide, was asking why they were allowed to come back after their previous plan was a complete failure, why they're still alive after committing suicide for their plan. There only other thing I have to add is, if Chara cared about their family or to be more specific, Asriel, even a little bit, I think Asriel, as nice as he is, would have said "but they still cared about us at heart." or something to that effect. But no, all he says is "Chara wasn't the greatest person." And that's more or less Asriel saying Chara was a bad person, but sugarcoating it, like he seems to often do,

(and this is purely speculation, ofc, but,) After saving the souls of all your friends, (all of which were referred to with their own gender-specific pronouns, might I add,) you have to save one more soul."You reach out and call THEIR name." It's easy to assume THEY are Asriel, and it's HIS soul you're saving, but Chara's actually one of the characters in-game only ever referred to with they/them pronouns. Reaching out and saving Chara triggers those memories of Asriel finding Chara, befriending them, growing to love them like a sibling. And THAT memory is what brings back Asriel's empathy and allows you to defeat him. And in regards to Asriel saying Chara's a bad person: At the end of the game, there's another character that gets called a bad person for despising humanity and generally being mean as heck. Undyne. Monster Kid says that she's not as cool as they thought, she's mean, etc, but no one believes Undyne is evil and irredeemable. In fact, there are tons of parallels between Undyne and Chara, but I won't go into that right here omg. Basically what I'm getting at is that if we had gotten to know Chara to the extent we did Undyne, we would probably be more sympathetic toward them. Based on what we know about Chara's life with the Dreemurrs, it's safe to assume Chara was actually rather FOND of them, and Asriel in particular. They wore around a friendship locket, most likely from Asriel, and even in the genocide run, they say that it's right where it belongs when you equip it. Chara drew pictures for their parents which Asgore kept up on the wall of his room, "For King Dad!"Also, in one ending, Asgore says himself that the hope he sees in Frisk's eyes is reminiscent of Chara';s... not exactly something you'd hear about a kid that is completely evil. But most importantly, they never, ever intentionally hurt any of the Dreemurrs. Asgore's buttercup poisoning was unintentional, a child's mistake. If they had wanted to hurt the goat fam, they absolutely could have, being a human and all. If Chara was cruel enough, they could have poisoned Asgore for good, or stabbed Toriel with that Real Knife of theirs, taken a soul, and crossed the barrier to punish humanity themselves. But they didn't. Instead, they poisoned themselves and died slowly and painfully. (I suggest you look up the symptoms of buttercup poisoning.... they're not very fun) They trusted Asriel with their soul, not knowing that they would have any power once a part of him. And I'm willing to bet they NEVER meant for Asriel to get hurt, let alone die.

Sad Goat (Well I'll have a long response myself, sorry, lol) All of those memories/flashback that Frisk experiences while unconscious/dead?. Yeah, I know, those were what led people to believe that Chara's spirit was inside Frisk in the first place. But there is still NEVER any direct intervention, positive or negative. I'm sure the "they" in saving Someone Else was to temporarily hide the fact it was Asriel, especially since it becomes his name afterwards. And I wouldn't say it's exactly right to compare Monster Kid, who is legitimately still a kid, to Asriel, who at that point is a LOT older than he looks, despite still being a child at heart, and actually was close with Chara, unlike Monster Kid who doesn't seem to know Undyne very well at all personally. Regarding Flowey, the part in genocide when he tells Chara that he started killing people out of curiosity, only wanting to do so to see what would happen, he says to Chara "You of all people must know how liberating it is to act this way!" This hints at Chara's violent nature. If I were to speculate, Chara didn't kill everyone at first because they had no idea what monsters were like, I'm sure they TRIED to like them, and not hate them like humans but honestly aside from appearance and soul, they don't seem to be too different. And to be honest? I don't think poisoning Asgore was a mistake. Aside from using the advanced vocabulary, Chara was able to come up their plan. They're smarter than they look. I could even go so far as to say Chara's was testing the potency of the flower's effects on Asgore, probably making sure it will kill them when they try it themself. Chara probably also knew that as large as Asgore is, a small amount of the flower wouldn't kill him. I'm honestly surprised people didn't notice something like that in the VHS tapes. All of the tapes revealed a tidbit of information, and the thing revealed in that one? What, that the kids made a dumb mistake at one point, that doesn't seem to be super relevant to the story? I really don't think it's something as simple as that. There's no other conclusion it could be other than revealing an ulterior motive in Chara, or maybe even a bit of sadism. Considering how it was worded. Asriel said "I should have laughed it off, like you did." There it is, Asriel THINKS Chara laughed it off for the reason you described, because Chara knew he would get better. And that is exactly right, but not in the way Asriel thought, it wasn't wishful thinking. Chara DID know Asgore would get better. Why? Because they did it themself, insuring it wouldn't kill Asgore, to test it's effects in small amounts. All in all, I still think my theory is a bit more plausible, but a lot of your points did make sense. It's made me realize Chara is a lot more of a debatable character than I thought. And I'm guessing Toby meant for them to be like that.

Theory: Charas evil soul and Asriel's good soul are both in Flowey, fused. Asriel's soul has most control over the forms that Flowey takes, but Charas evilness has infected Asriel. WD Gaster is involved with Chara. Chara themself is neither a demon nor aware of the game. But their Determination is. From a spiritualist standpoint, a Soul is a compromise of two major parts. A spirit and a noncorporeal mass. Chara, the good character, would be the Spirit. Whom possesses Frisk at the start of the game. Introducing us to narration. The Mass would be the Determination. In this case, a black blood-like substance that is hinted at in the sprites of Flowey, Hypergod of Death Asriel, the Amalgamites, the Map pieces for True Lab, WD Gaster, and Demon Chara. Also remember that according to Alphys' notes, she extracted Determination from the Blueprints of the Soul. Where did those Blueprints come from? Take not that Chara's soul is also missing from all the souls collected. While this can be assumed it was destroyed with Asriel's body, you have to remember the six souls still existed after the destruction of Omega Flowey. So where did Chara's soul go? It can then be assumed Gaster experimented on Chara's Soul. This is most likely the experiment that killed Gaster, and ultimately lead to the creation of Undertale.

But souls need a body to relocate themselves, which they didn't have, and yet they disappeared, so they were most likely destroyed. So, if other human souls were destroyed in genocide and pacifist ending, means that Chara's soul was also destroyed with Asriel's body. I was thinking about this. What happens if a monster absorbs a human soul but then dies? Asriel did this. I think Chara is sort of like the eye of Sauron - he doesn't have a body, but his spirit is out there, but he will have one once he gets power. He does this by entering frisk's body when frisk lands on the bed of flowers Asriel died on. Chara's soul returned to life when frisk gained power by killing everything, and then Chara took control.

I honestly don't think Chara was inheritantly evil. I think Chara was influenced by what path the player chose; genocide run obviously being very traumatic to a young child. There are some in the community who believe Chara "fell" into the underground to take their own life originally but when Asgore and Chara fall ill and Chara dies, Chara sees how cruel humanity really is and starts to harbor a hatred for them for harming their brother and best friend, Asriel. This is just what I believe though.

I feel bad for chara. she fell into the underground to end their awful life, and ended up finding a family instead. they gave their life in one of the most painful methods, poisoning themselves with buttercups, just so they could save all monsters. they didn't go to the surface to kill all humans, they went to get six souls. and when asriel was being attacked, they told him to fight back. now they're the villain of the story. Chara may have some mental issues from her time on the surface, but I don't think they were ever evil. They only become evil when they are forced to. they are a servant to the player, and they assist you no matter what path you choose. even if it means having to watch you destroy their former friends and family.

It's my personal belief that Chara was NOT the villain of Undertale. They weren't a villain at all. They were a child, an _impressionable_ child. When you first start a game, you, the Player, have a choice. You can choose to be a pacifist, and refuse to hurt anyone, even if it means your character will die multiple times. You can choose to protect your character even if it means killing in self-defense (Neutral). Or, you can choose to actively seek to murder every single monster you can in order to gain power (Genocide). Frisk doesn't choose this. _You_ do. Chara's spirit is there when you make that choice. Since we know human souls linger after they've died, it's a logical conclusion to make that Chara would be nearby when another human falls into the underground. While we don't have any factual evidence that a human soul can speak to anyone, we _do_ have evidence that they can affect other beings, since that's the reason why Omega Flowey is defeated in the Pacifist route. This leads me to believe that Chara actually can speak to Frisk, especially with the theory that the two of them share the same Soul Trait: Determination, which is cemented by the red heart--or soul-- in the True Lab. The only thing I can see interfering with this, is that their soul is _in the lab_ so maybe it's their...essence? That's talking to Frisk throughout their adventure? Still working out the bugs on that one, to be honest. So, Chara is there from the beginning, and I believe that they are the Narrator. Keeping this in mind, when you make the choice to do the Genocide run, they are influenced by the Player. Chara was never the villain. Far from it, actually. They may have harbored a hatred for humanity, but that's the only thing that was wrong with them. They gave their life, sacrificed themselves in a selfless, heroic act to save monsterkind, because in their young mind, they were the only one who could do it. Another human may fall into the underground, but would more likely refuse to give up their soul. Chara's reasons for falling were canonically unhappy. They were, very likely, suicidal in the first place. They had given up on life from the start, and they were just happy to have a family that loved them at all. They were the best candidate, in their mind, because they were supposed to die that day anyway, and their hatred for other humans would make it easier for them to take the souls needed to free the people they loved. Chara was a good kid. Flawed, like any other, but still had a _good heart._ You chose to kill. You believed that it was okay to do that. And in doing so, _you taught Chara, an _*_impressionable child_*_ that killing is okay._ You taught them that nothing else matters, besides power. You. You created a demon from the soul of a child. You are the villain in the Genocide route.

I feel like the first time he fell in, it was a suicide attempt. He landed, and all that stuff happened, but Chara could have realized something. He could have remembered why he threw himself into the cave to try and kill himself and realized how strong monsters were compared to humans, especially in his time since there aren't wizards and warriors anymore. Chara, realizing he can get revenge on all the people who bullied him, hatches a plan for revenge with Asriel. Chara poisons himself and lets Asriel absorb his soul to cross the barrier, from there, he would take over his body and destroy humanity for what it did to him. However, what he did not account for would be Asriel's soul. Asriel was filled with determination, making him immune to the corruption of human souls. Because of this, Chara is trapped soulless and memoryless on the surface after waking up on the flowers. Chara returns home to a new family and new name... Frisk. Frisk goes up to the mountain, looking for flowers to give their mom, and trips into the underground once again. The reason I say that Chara lost his memories is because Asriel's soul was lost inside Flowey, making him forget everyone and everything. For the genocide route, Chara seeks revenge on the monsters for being filled with determination and not letting him destroy humanity, and in doing so, grows stronger and stronger with more souls he absorbs, eventually resulting in the destruction of everyone and everything. In the pacifist playthrough, Chara embraces Frisk as his new self and seeks to forgive everyone, and is then filled with determination, making him finally whole.

Anyways speaking about Gaster: Some time ago me and my friend were talking about Sans and Gaster and their connections so after a bit of talk he said: "People call Sans the shadow of Gaster" Me: "Yeah, cause they have some similarities... Wait hold the damn phone, what if Sans IS Gaster... He see's through the timelines... Like Gaster, he has GASTER blasters, he is very aware of everything going on around him... What if Sans is somehow being controlled by Gaster" I mean think about it: Sans is kinda lazy and likes making puns, but then there is the teleporting/timeline seeing/making people die 100 times side of him that doesn't really seem to fit in with the rest... What if he's actually being controlled a bit just so he can stop any bad things from happening. We have not really got any clue about Gaster but surely he isn't like Flowey/Chara with the wanting to kill the FUCKING TIMELINES!!!... +Sir Goldenblade Actually I had a similar theory... but what if Papyrus was originally Gaster and Sans was his main assistant. He and a team of top scientists were working on a way to use Determination to go back to before the war and prevent it... there is a horrible accident that ends up killing the team and leaves Gaster/Papyrus in a blank memoryless state. Sans decides it would be best to retire to Snowden and uses what notes gaster/papyrus left in a attempt to fix things and fix and finish the machine. Over time it becomes aparent that he just cant do it and gives up. Ultimately deciding to make the best of things and move on. All the while giving his brother a happy carefree life filled with childlike ambition while keeping a watchful eye on him. Basically it would still jive with the whole "gaster fell into his machine and was scatted to the far reaches of the game" thing. It wasn't his physical body but his personification itself. Basically... he RESET himself instead of the world. This would also explain Sans knowledge of the game mechanics, a awareness of timeline changes, and his weaponry. It was leftover's from his time as his brothers/Gasters assistant. :D

I haven't watched the video yet, but I believe chara isn't evil when you think about it, the whole plan with the monster and human soul, if chara really was evil, they'd just kill asriel and take the soul for themselves. Also, I believe i make a pretty good point when i say that they watched asgore in pain, and some of you may say, "Well Asriel says "I should've just laughed off like she did", so HA!" but in undertale, laughing is shown as away of dealing with negative emotions, so Chara wasn't laughing at asgore, but she was dealing with seeing him go through it. Lastly, After chara sees this, she eats the buttercups used in the pie that made asgore ill, putting her through that would cause chara to salivate and her mouth to become inflamed. Pains in the stomach and constrictions happen right before she dies. she put herself through all of this, just so the monsters could get through the barrier. If you say that Chara is not a hero, then, well, you're probably wrong

I believe Chara was just influenced by the human who fell down and started attacking everything that they saw, and decided to just follow that human around, or they didn't have a choice. And then they were later influenced by their choice and became a bit, unstable. She even goes silent during some battles in the genocide route (and the others routes, I think).

When you play a game, any game, you are Chara. You kill, you gain, and that's the game you play. Because you as the player kill so easily because you know the people you are killing have no real feelings, no soul, you become Chara; Just someone playing around in a game they can toy around in, just like Flowey. When you are doing the pacifist/neutral route (or whatever the route you wanted to do the first time around), you are putting the soul of you, the player, into Frisk. You act the same way you would if you were Frisk them self. Frisk, however, is NOT a human. The only reason why they are assumed to be human is because you, the player, are human. The monster souls represent characters in a game. They are weak because although they have some meaning to the player, the player knows that none of the characters are real, and the game is in the end a sandbox for the player to mess around in. The thing about Undertale is the surface is reality. When a human fell down into the underground, it was your character, Frisk, the one you control, being given a physical form. Frisk has such a blank expression all the time because they do not feel anything, as they are not even human. During the Sans fight, he mentions Frisk's expression, and is able to read it. That's because Sans sees YOU. The player. Flowey is able to do this, too, at least he is aware of it. He says "I bet someone like that is watching right now, aren't they?" hinting at the presence of the player. He knows you exist, since he speaks directly to you. Also, Chara has that smile on her face because they do have a soul. They are able to have/feel expression, as Toby Fox intended for that to be a part of the game. Chara's smile indicates that they were a player that actually fell into the game. The player, however, still had the ability to save and load. I would go on, but gosh, I need to stop at some point. Any thoughts?

But we need to consider Charas existence from two different perspectives: both as a metaphorical device and as a character within the fictional 'sandbox'. From a metaphorical standpoint I feel that Chara like flowery could be thought of as a manifestation of the Buddhist concept of attachment. There is no love, no enjoyment, just predictable lines of text that nurture a heartless indifference. Your soulless MC who continues to run the false pacifist ending is the ultimate result. This is why after the true pacifist ending Flowery begs you to stop, not give in to the power that you have been fighting all along, this soulless attachment. From an in-game point of view my theory is that we should continue with the Buddhists theme and focus on the word 'reincarnation'. Every time you see a game over screen your MC sees Charas last memories and when you fall in the trash zone your MC relives Charas fall into the underground. In world I believe that Frisk is Charas reincarnation and that this connection to the underground from his past life might have been what drew him there in the first place. Perhaps it was what drew all the children there. In waterfall it's mentioned that the barrier was constructed by seven human mages. But in that case, in-world what is possessing Fisk? One thought could be that Frisk reverts to his personality from his previous life, but I don't think Char was as much a horrific evil as he was in the genocide run when he was alive or he would have just killed the monsters then. No I think that like flowery the Chara we meet in the genocide run is a soulless essence left behind by Charts corpse buried under the flowered you fall on. Like Flowery your souls enormous DETERMINATION animates him within frisks body instead of inside a flower and that on every run Frisk fights against his influence as you play. The Level of Violence you gain as you kill monsters is Charas influence slowly warping Fisk into something inhumane. This is all my interpretation and could be 100 percent incorrect but I do feel that Chara needs to be examined as both an in game Character and a reference to part of the one controlling the CHARActer.

Joel Sasmad I see what you are saying there, but here's a theory: What if Frisk isn't human? What if they are what they are in reality; A 2d sprite that you control. That's why Chara can posses Frisk, but only in the genocide route. This is so because in the pacifist or a friendly neutral route, you as the player are acting like these characters are real. That's why some people cry at the end of Undertale. However, once you do the genocide route, you know that all the characters are purely fictional. You don't treat these characters as living things; Only as pawns in the game you control. In the genocide route, Chara is just the in-game representation of the loss of one's ability to treat characters as real people. Eventually, as you kill more and more, Chara, your ability to kill characters without any serious concern, becomes more & more powerful. This applies to any game where you can kill things, not just Undertale. Take games like Fallout 4 or Dishonored for example; When you kill someone in those games, you don't have that sense of "Oh my god, what have I done! I just killed someone!!!" That you would get if you took someone's life in reality. That's what Chara is; Your Character. The one that you control (thus having no soul) and the one that carries out the act of killing without feeling ANYTHING. They are just a sprite, so they don't care if you kill. The only reason why you can end the genocide route at (almost) any moment is because you, the player, can still say "Hey, this is wrong! I have to stop killing these guys!" And Chara can't stop you. Once you complete the genocide route, though, Chara's in charge now. You have fully committed to murder, and you have basically reached a point of no return; You killed every monster in the underground, and if you were able to keep playing to be able to kill the shopkeepers, you wouldn't hesitate to do so. That's why Chara can take over; They would do the same as you if you were to keep going, so you are no longer needed in that world. Hence Chara, being that she is actually a force within the game, can crash your game, delete saves, basically run the game themself. And once that happens, there's no going back; You have fully become Chara.
