“After numerous pandemic-induced cancellations of tours for the previous Swans album leaving meaning, and an apparent bottomless pit of waiting, waiting, waiting, and the strange disorientation that came with this sudden but interminable forced isolation I decided it was time to write songs for a new Swans album and forget about everything else. They came relatively easily, always informed by the suspicion that these could be my last. When I finally was able to travel, songs in hand, to Berlin to work with my friends recording this record, the feeling was akin to the moment in The Wizard of Oz when the film changes from Black and White to Color. I frequently listen to music as I fall asleep and I had this album on loop the other day. I woke up in the morning to this song right as it hits the "and that was the time to let it all go. To let it all go" verse. Then, the chimes come in and I woke up with such a profound sense of peace and contentment. Finally, Gira does his best Braveheart impression with the outro and I legitimately started to cry cathartic tears when that first "Freedom!" hit me. I was still half asleep but it was such a beautiful way to wake up that it made me glad to be alive. This is a very life-affirming song, especially considering how nihilistic the rest of the album (and indeed, most of their music) is. I just wanted to share that this piece of music will always be very special to me as a result and thank you, Swans for your talent and humanity.
