My Mums Great Grandad William Gammon who was the coxswain of the Mumbles lifeboat and a few family members who were amongst the crew, all lost their lives on that fatefull day the lifeboat went down! R.I.P to all those brave men that didn't come home that night. You will never be forgotten.

My grandmother was born Eliza Bancroft in the groundsman house on St Helen’s. Two of her brothers were Jack and the immortal Bill, both Wales rugby internationals. The family lost members in the Mumbles lifeboat. John Poole, Oxfordshire 4:53

I'm from Swansea (I'm currently IN Swansea typing this), I was down the Kingsway this morning to get some pasties from the market (and yes, Carol Watts is still selling cockles). Thank you VERY much for this video, to see it from this perspective is, rather astounding. WOAW! 😅

Great vid' which shows the Swansea in which I grew up in as a child and gives an insight into how much has changed throughout the area.

When ever I see people from the past in films like this, It makes me value life more, As a life time is just a blip on the world clock, You got to take care of yourself because now I want to grow old gracefully now I am older, Growing up I did not care about reaching the old part of life, I want to live to over a hundred at least, lol, Jokes aside God willing I do live to a ripe old age...... I used to go to a Caravan park in Swansea, Riverside Caravan park At the beginning of Swansea though, A great Caravan Park if I am honest, You could have a peaceful life in Riverside Caravan Park as long as you keep yourself to yourself..... I am a Cardiffian though but I never had issues with people from Swansea being from Cardiff.... Wales is an amazing Country as far as I am concerned lol.....

6.05. Pompa's Cafe at Morriston Cross. I don't know what year that was, ( early 1900's perhaps ), but I was brought up in Waun Road, and did my courting in Pompa's in late 1950's. Juke box and coffee. It was a winning combination.

Really interesting video, seeing how much things changed post war. The market always a key part of the town, then the city. Cockles and welsh cakes always present. Great insight.

Few of the trees we saw being planted survive today. They've been swept away by a sea of concrete. The wealth of Wales came from the manufacturing and exports of Swansea. I doubt if there is one manufacturer or exporter anywhere in the lower Swansea valley now.

This was great. I am a child of the 60's and seeing some of the older memories i have of the town, really took me back. Riding on a red double decker bus, on the parallel seat toward the front, through castle street, around castle gardens and up princess way. The view toward the dock from high st station was bang on, loads of crane masts in the distance, a very distinct memory for me. Holding my mothers hand, walking past a wall of the old train station where the leisure centre is today, the red brick and narrow steel window frames toward the top. I remember the ugly side of the city too, places that were yet to be developed. Very dingy and depressing in some places, especially around the south dock area. It did deserve the name in parts but to be fair swansea had a lot of beauty amongst the ugly too. Castle Gardens was an oasis in the city. The kingsway roundabout at the west end always had a great flower display on it. There were lots of little things that put life back into what seemed like a dreary place to me as a child. Swansea or an old name i found for it on an old map, LLys Waun Isaf, which i believe means, Territory in the lower valley, deserves its place in history and isnt given enough credit for its part in it!!!!

@@localpm Thanks for the reply. I left Swansea in early 80s at age of 20 so much of the film is unfamiliar to me but the lad on the bike I thought, from the hills ahead and to the right of him, might have been approaching Cwmbwrla on prerhaps an old Carmarthen Road. Either way, great to see some sights of familiar places before I was born. Thanks for sharing.

The pollution that is STILL present from copper production is so bad that when time team worked in excavating the site they had to don protective equipment as it potentially lethal. God knows how many citizens of Swansea died young from working there . its adressed at around the 8 minute mark. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHmofKWeac13p6M

@@localpm i think there are 3 currently. castle, high street and the arcade/shoppers walk. i found some stuff online which said there was one where bhs and m&s are to goat street and there was one called alexandra arcade near the station. were these the same ones ? and did they even exist ?

@@iaw7406 The only 3 at the moment are Shoppers walk/Picton Arcade and castle(although no shops are left in it). I remember an arcade in the 60s in High Street where alexandra house is now situated.Never knew of arcade where m and S or BHs was.
