Swap out the DIN Socket on a BMW R1250GS

Here I am swapping out the DIN socket in the right-hand cockpit space on my R1250GS and replacing it with a purpose-built USB socket replacement from Nippy Norman's. I then, using a bracket from the same supplier, re-purpose the old DIN socket to be an auxiliary power outlet direct from the battery to charge other items of connect a battery charger through.
Hope you enjoy it.
Below are various links to kit I use or items referenced in this video.
These are amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom) links and clicking through and purchasing does earn me a small commission and costs you nothing extra.
I'd be really grateful if you are buying any of these if you used the links and help support the channel.
Thank you
Nick

Nick just left this on the Nippy Norman website...... Never really used the DIN connection and thought it was a little pointless. However, by chance watched a Nick Hodge (KZbin video who does a few mods to his GS) about changing it out for this dual USB socket which for me is far more useful! Fitting is very straight forward comprehensive instructions provided! Worth the money thanks NN!

Rather than the GS which was a gradual add-on process I’m needing to assemble luggage from other suppliers, some Denali stuff that I want to upgrade and/or doesn’t fit the GSA. Then I’ve got to unwind most figments off the GS so it’s busy. Then got to refit it all and run her in to 1st service before 18th when were of ‘who knows where’ on a weeks tour

Hi Nick, thanks for another useful video. I also fitted the dual USB socket from Nippy Normans, but also bought from them another DIN socket with spring loaded flap cover and integrated wires around 25cm long. Rather than use the bracket as you did, I drilled the plastic cover under the seat on the left hand side, allowing the new socket to fit just behind the ECU. The wires can then be routed directly onto the battery terminals. I'm very satisfied with the result, which looks very discreet. I mainly use this for a mini compressor that I carry in the top box on long tours. It has mostly been needed by other riders!

Yes I agree. The other slight ‘down’ over my adapter is one of the outlets came out the back. Both out the top can make them brush the underside of the bars if the USB cable is thick. No danger but just the bracket could no with being 10mm lower or I should invest in some flexible cables 😂

Nick, thanks for that I saw this under my seat in a bag not sure what it was so kept it with the tools that were also under the seat in my top box. Nobody mentioned it at the 600 mile check, and also just had the 1st year service and nobody mentioned it then. Just been out and fitted it, and the plug now shows on the TFT screen. Not sure that I am going to use it for off road, but now it is fitted. I thought one of the service people would have mentioned it ? I too have the optimists 4 but just fitted the connector straight to the battery with the adapter fitted up under the seat, so just connect the charger straight to that, so no need to worry about the canbus. Just waiting for a Cymarc front engine protector to be delivered as I noticed a stone chip on the front of the casing, don’t want the dreaded rust showing. Hopefully this will stop any more from occurring.

Just while your on the subject of accessory sockets, if you want to use an 'Airman' compressor or similar for pumping up tyres/punctures from the bike, you will need the standard socket plus the only why the compressors work is if the socket is connected directly to the battery. Because the canbus system will not allow them to operate, due to it thinking the power drain is too much and shuts down the socket ! If like me over the years, a small portable compressor is a gods send. 👍

Nick, yes just have it available to charge items if necessary, the second light circuit on the CANSmart is only 4amp, with my set up now probably not going to get a lot of use, I run my Gopro from one of the USB ports, the GoPro remote from the other port and I charge my iPhone from a Quad Lock wireless mount connected to the battery via an Optimate O-100 as this cuts the power 4hrs after turning off the bike, the O-100 is connected to an SAE connection from the battery which I can disconnect and use to power my Rocky Creek pump😉

I just aquired an Optimate charger, which was supplied programmed to interact with the Canbus system. My bike is a 2010 fGS650 (the 799 cc parallel twin), and is Canbus equipped. Currently I have a (straight) Optimate DIN to USB charger that I use to keep my Iphone (using GPS navigation apps) charged up when riding, and this is the only charging outlet currently installed. It would be nice to be able to twin out the USB connectors as per your installation, but I am interested in how the charging works with the Optimate charger reprogrammed to a normal charger that does not interact with the Canbus system. Did you lose any of the functionality of the Optimate charger when used in this way? The Optimate charger is expensive, and it seems a waste in a way to give up some degree of interactivity if in fact this does happen. Does it still operate as a smart charger in both charge and maintain modes when reprogrammed in this way?
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce. You will lose Sumerian’s functionality of the charger talking to the canbus although the charger remains ‘smart’ so reading voltage, applying load, waiting, remeasuring, charge, trickle charge, etc. I have the same unit and got more fed up with removing USB adapter for fear of theft (they’re not cheap) and then remembering to plug it back in than I ever did with the optimate charger function loss also, with the 1250 the DIN socket is quite low and pulling the optimate lead out has already resulted in one new lead as the plug snapped. Whatever you do. Be very careful pulling that plug. It’s more delicate than it feels 👍🏻

@@nickhodgeUK Hi Nick: Prompt and helpful - I am grateful for the benefit of your experience. How are the rubber covers on the twin USB connector holding up? I have to say that is one virtue of the DIN connector supplied as OEM on the bike - the hinged cover is robust, but I am not a fan of how far the Optimate USB adaptor sticks out when plugged in. Fortunately it is in front of my tank bag and somewhat protected, but is pretty easy to dislodge the thing and lose connectivity. .
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 3 жыл бұрын
Bruce Bolster certainly the usb rubber covers could engage better. They do tend to pop open. However I would again say that normally I have stuff plugged in in a serious ride and not much wet gets down there in the cockpit to worry too much.

Hi, good install but I believe your new USB sockets are permanently live. 🤔Possibly better to wire positive lead so that the socket is off when the ignition is off. Alternatively, Hörnig supply a twin USB socket which has its own on/off switch😉
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Ernie that’s not the case if you refer to the ‘cockpit’ USB twin socket? That is Canbus controlled and switched off after short delay of ignition switching off. If you mean the new DIN socket under the seat, yes, that is permanently live but really only used for my charger although useful for unrestricted (to 10A) power supply

It amazes me that BMW do not put a USB socket on the GS as standard like for instance Triumph but that looks a simple fix if you need 1. The DIN socket mounting bracket is a brilliant idea-what many don't realise is that when run through the canbus system it won't power things like a mini compressor if you get a puncture so for that alone it's well worth having (I used the optimate flying lead direct to the battery via an inline fuse to do the same and also to power my heated vest) To save having to faff about taking the battery out I used the jump lead stud forward and right of the battery as you look at it to connect all my accessories which is far easier and quicker than having to remove the battery. As far as the pro plug is concerned I think BMW don't plug it in as IIRC it's something to do with being able to switch the TCS and/or ABS off completely in pro mode so they don't want to be open to any legal action if things go pear shaped in pro mode so by default have provided the bike without that option so the owner has to enable it themselves. Great vid as usual and good luck with the camping!

What's really infuriating and I think you eluded to it in this video, even the BMW Techs forget to install the chips, even if the customer has forgotton also. Hi Scott. It’s obviously on the right side but if you look on your bike there’s a triangle in the frame just behind the battery cover on the side. Without looking I’d say it’s under the front seat and the socket faces backwards. I’d say I’d rather have the lead there than running over the tank and into the cockpit. I reckon it’d be ideal and only £20 (for the bracket and wiring (you use your DIN socket))

They’re fine. Mainly as it’s in one of the driest parts of the bike. Normally the reason it stops charging when pelting down is the other (lightning connector) end and although the new iPhones are so say water-resistant. It doesn’t take much ingress of water to get the ‘charging disabled which you can override but one of your children will die’ warning. And that can last for hours 👍🏻

Do not want to end up stranded in the middle of Norway :-)
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul. No. The output of that ‘channel’, be it DIN or USB is controlled to a limit by the Canbus. If you re-site the DIN you can of course use more as it’s connected directly to the battery but I’d still advise it as the charging system while the bike is running is putting back far more than you could take out even with high draw heated suits let alone very low draw charging items. In ALL cases, be careful what you draw when the bike is switched off (if you have anything connected directly to battery) as the battery is pretty small and if you have a tracker too that’s on 24/7. Bit of a waffle but hope it makes sense? Ride safe 👍🏻

I have the optimate dual USB adapter but three main reasons. I mainly use it for USB and a fixed one isn’t stealable. The fixed one required no wire alteration and finally I could inexpensively and again with wiring alteration move the existing DIN to a useful (for air bed, battery and heated jacket) position below the seat and in fact still use the USB adapter as a ‘charging station’ for helmets and such during rest stops in tours for my and fellow riders helmets where they can rest on seat/panniers. Hi Nick, Great video. I'm interested getting the Din relocation kit, but my local BMW dealer can't find it on their system. I don't suppose you have or could find the part number?

Mike. It’s an aftermarket part sold by Nippy Normans in the UK. (Both the USB socket to go in the factory fitted space of the DIN socket and the ‘kit’ to relocate the now redundant DIN socket under the seat as an aux power supply) 👍🏻

Hi nick, Great video. Think I am going to do the exact same thing having just got the socket for Xmas! Can I ask how you find using the optimate 4 in standard mode through the new din socket? Is it still effective? I am assuming you just switched it from canbus to standard mode and plug it in using the din connector?
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Liam. Exactly that. You lose a little of the Canbus feedback to the charger but she’s been plugged in ‘standard’ mode since October. When first on she charges then drops to a maintenance charge and if it senses a low voltage switches back. You’ll likely need a slightly longer bolt for the bracket (I didn’t on my GS (just) but did on the GSA) 👍🏻

Hi Phil. It’s no longer set in its Canbus mode as it’s effectively connected directly to the battery via the DIN repositioning but works fine as an ‘auto’ charger. Boosts when first connected then drops to trickle. Been on 24/7 since November 👍🏻

Hi Matt. I guess you have the optimate 4 CANBUS edition? If so connect the crocodile clips ends to the charger in place of the DIN plug and connect them together (yes you heard that right!!). Now plug the charger in the mains and that will switch it to ‘normal’ mode. Do it again if you wish to return to Canbus mode. 👍🏻

Hello! Could you recommend a tool set for the bmw (or bikes in general) from amazon, for example, that we could use to do basic stuff? One that is good and unexpensive enough. 😬 And the tool needed to screw the bolts knowing at which torque are we leaving them. Thanks and very nice videos !
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dani. That’s tough although I may do a video on that soon. There’s only so much you can carry and some things have to be sacrificed as not important enough and too big. When I fit accessories or do stuff to my bike I separate the tools I use and decide if it’s likely I would use them roadside. It’s important you can remove your wheels, all the fairings and things to get to stuff, but stuff to work on the engine and drive are not ‘roadside’ so not worth carrying. Most BMW bolts are torx, which is why it bugs me that accessories are often hex fasterners. Quality wise take what you can afford but don’t buy cheap kits. In torx and hex key sets, look for S2 steel and get ball-end on the hex keys. In spanner’s (wrenches) use chrome vanadium steel. An adjustable will cover many wrenches but make sure there is little or no jaw play as otherwise a tool which at best gives a light grip, gives none at all. Bahco make good adjustables. Good luck

Sure. It’s the chip for the pro-riding modes. It’s standard BMW fitment if you paid for it so not sure what dealer is talking a out. You gain Dynamic Pro and Enduro Pro selectable on the TFT (rather than just Rain, Road, Dynamic and Enduro). It then further allows you to customise Dynamic and Enduro (That’s effectively the ‘pro’). You’ll know when it’s plugged in straight away as you’ll have the chip icon at top of TFT and can then customise settings for ‘wheelie control’ , suspension, etc.

Hi Nick Not commented on your videos before but a subscriber and been 'lurking' a while! Great video, though the cost of the twin USB had me wincing a bit! I still have the original DIN plug and the optimate usb plug you showed at the beginning of the video which I find OK. Like you, I wanted a non canbus socket for accessories (mainly an air compressor) so I fitted an Optimate socket which resides under the pillion seat. Yours is a much neater solution though on the bracket. I assume you can't buy the little bracket separately? I could fabricate something but purchasing would be easier! Keep the videos coming!

Thanks for commenting. The bracket comes with wires and uses the original DIN socket. Maybe an email to Nippy Norman’s May be in order. More likely to have cables damaged faulty than a bit of metal or maybe one with a scratch. Worth a punt anyhow. Welcome along 😂

Hi Jorge. Your the 2nd to ask the same thing 🤣 here’s the reply I gave... “I have the optimate dual USB adapter but three main reasons. I mainly use it for USB and a fixed one isn’t stealable. The fixed one required no wire alteration and finally I could inexpensively and again without wiring alteration move the existing DIN to a more useful (for air bed, battery charging and heated jacket) position below the seat and in fact still use the USB adapter as a ‘charging station’ for helmets and such during rest stops in tours for my and fellow riders helmets where they can rest on seat/panniers.
