Scalpel blades work great. They can be bent slightly to provide an excellent surface finish.

here is a hint- FREEZE IT it machines great frozen. measure it when roughed. then thaw it completely to room temp. record how much expansion occurs. freeze then make final cuts taking into account the expansion factor.

Fridge freezing isn't nearly cold enough. I've tried overnight dry ice freezing and that wasn't cold enough. I've frozen rubber with immersion in liquid nitrogen and that works, but I still had to set up a drip line on keep misting the rubber with LN to maintain the necessary stiffness for machining and to overcome the heating of cutting. Cut machining with blades is a handy trick, but blades aren't good at a lot of other useful operations a lathe can do like internal boring work or grooving.
Nice! You can freeze the rubber in liquid nitrogen and use normal cutting tools, though 😉

Need to figure out how to keep the rubber cold while machining it. Think of what you could do on a milling machine if you could keep the rubber cold.
@patrickfle91722 жыл бұрын
@@A_Bit_of_Thought on a mill I'd try submerging and milling it in a bath. A friend turned N_2 frozen rubber, so that's not just a theory. You can re-freeze it before it gets too warm, and go on machining... but usually rubber parts are not too fancy 200 operations parts anyways 😉

@@A_Bit_of_Thought I think folks use some sort of coolant and a chiller for heat sensitive parts. Maybe some water soluble alcohol type mixtures...
@A_Bit_of_Thought2 жыл бұрын
@@krap101 Just did a quick search on automotive antifreeze/water mixes and those mixes can be made to stay liquid down to -84 degrees fahrenheit. I don't know if that would be cold enough to render rubber solid enough for precision machining.

@@A_Bit_of_Thought They rather grind rubber than use a lathe tool or mill. It gives a better finish and has no cutting deformation.

I've used mounted box cutter blades, heated up with a propane torch and bent 90 degrees. Straight box cutters work well to cut rubber tubing slid over aluminum bar.

Very interesting and effective! My first inclination would have been to freeze it and use more conventional tools, but the surface finish wouldn’t have been as good. (Not could I have made a thin-walled cylinder as you did.)
I like your logic on cutting rubber fella. What I am wondering is how much distortion did you get when the rubber was removed from between the lathe chuck and center ?? When I machined rubber I would just freeze the material. Liquid nitrogen works wonders.

Thank you for watching. If the diameter is smaller, the diameter will be narrower on the tailstock side.
Nice video. The dishwashing lather is good coolant and lubricant for rubber. Especially for parting off and grooving. I am using hacksaw blades as they are more stabile.
