Swapping a Starter Motor for a 2015 Ford F-150 V8

Took me 2.5 hrs to get starter out. Still not sure how I ever loosened that top bolt. Tried every combination of extensions available. Nothing wanted to work. No room up there. Almost gave up. Ground down a small socket to make it 1/8-1/4" shorter with a 6"-3/8 extension and that seemed to do the trick to loosen the bolt. Then took it out with 6'' 1/4 drive. Install was a little over and hour. When installing put a piece of tape over top hole, drill a hole in it and insert bolt. This will hold in place till you tighten it. Good luck to all that try this. On the hardness level I would rate this a 8 or 9, but still saved me around $350+ doing it myself.

My truck ignition sometimes makes a buzzing sound when I try to start it , then I back off and it starts. Sound like yours was doing the same?

That was useless you didn't show getting the bolts out for the right socket and extension combination

Like your truck, did you customize it yourself? Changing starter on 2016 F-150, top bolt is crazy.

Sorry! Just saw your comment.. thanks! Lifted, and customized it all myself. Yeah, that top bolt is a PITA! especially under a lifted truck with me laying just on the pavement

Oh my... got me doing that at least half of the total time of the install! Sheesh.. it was hard to reach, especially on an on-ground 6in lifted.

Same! Ford engineers should be left in the desert with a broken starter and a 3/8 ratchet with a 13 on an extension. Best of luck to them.

No kidding! Show us what you used to get that top bolt. I'm trying to figure out what wrench can find a bolt around a corner and loosen it up without stripping it!

That same starter is $196 on Rockauto lol you got ripped off.

Yeah, thought about ordering it through them, but shipping and import charges ruins it. Plus i have to ship my old part to get back the core deposit. Nah. I'd rather have one available locally.

Everyone go watch nzdiagonatics video his is way more in depth and shows how to get the top bolt off, this video is only good for the part number… which is useless since any ford dealership can get you the right thing
