Call it a flat bar GRAVEL bike. Everyone knows a GRAVEL bike is worth more than a "hybrid". Seriously.

Brings me to why I watch you channel: You make it work. And to me clearly its the "dad bike" builds that I enjoy watching the most. As they are decided, focused, distinct, and single minded. Not everything for everyone and hence nothing to most. I love that.

I hated frayed cables too, I have them so much that I once soldered the tips of the cable before installing the end caps

Frayed cables are the worst. Recently, I tried putting crazy glue to the ends of cables that were on the brink of unraveling past the point of no return. You kinda have to bend the cable downward so the glue doesn't run down the cable and get onto other things. 1-2 coats then let that sucker dry 200% before screwing with it. So far, the cables have survived 2 more swaps so I think it works pretty well.

Hit me up if you're willing to ship the Norco... I want it. It was the bike that got me.into bike tinkering.

Accordingly I have just sold 10 out of 14 cars and motorbikes, 27 out of plenty bicycles, and more sales pending. And every single time I feel relief. Just as I gain focus and obviously I distill to keep the very most precious bits.

I would like to get the Norco just bc it would be cool to have a little part of youtubery history. but I'm way down here in the south east US, so I don't think that's going to happen.

MicroNEW is another option. I've had great success with them. Second pair on my purple monster cross build because I went from 3x7 to 3x9. Have another set (2x8) on my cargo haulin' 1976 KHS Gran Sport mixte...which I just swapped cassettes to Microshift's Advent 8spd... H08. 12T-42T with a Wolftooth Roadlink

Depends on supply in your local FB marketplace. In my area (bakersfield, ca) all adult bikes are scarce so a bike like that would probably go for at least 50-70% of original retail.

Awesome to see the clear out. I just spent £50 on maintenance things like new cables, chain, and pads and it surprised me it cost that much for one bike. I shudder to think having to do that for 9 or more. No wonder you don't give a damn about your chains.

Shift and brake cables are a staple in the bike shop - always have them!!! I have cut the cable housing down a little here and there to get a little more cable length, but that is not very professional, and a hack thing to do.

New definition for dad bike. Knowing the frame is just a little short on stack height and bodging another spacer on anyway. Then hiding the transgression by getting a longer bolt to secure the top cap. Pretty solid but I'll always know I've been naughty!

I recently did a gran fondo of sorts on a flat bar bike. I chose this bike for the ride because I wasn't sure about the changes in elevation would be doable for my out-of-shape legs and the very non-climb-friendly gearing on my road bike. Never again. I have riser bars on my commuter e-bike and drop bars on my road bike and my wheel-on trainer bike. Flat bars ostensibly are the middle ground, but the reality, at least for me, is that they are bloody awful for anything more than a very short ride, offering none of the advantages of riser bars or drop bars. Those flat bars are being converted to drops.

Been selling parts build bikes all summer. I'd say you could get $600-700 in the high range for it, marketed as a gravel bike, and not a hybrid haha

Just did this yesterday. Switched my winter Norco Indie fixie from a flat/hydraulic set up to drop bar mechanical discs. After some fiddling works great. The hydraulic brakes went on a Giant hybrid for my sister as a parts swap. Both worked well. The Norco is the bike that won't die. I have ridden it through several winters. Going to switch from Schwalble non studded tires to Conti winters this year. My Bombtrack Arise fixie is far too nice to ride in the messy weather and leave outside. Subscribe or I will take all your 8 speed chains away.

Frayed cables.... pfffft. I've got frayed TYRES!! But I do know that whole "What's a parts bin bike worth?" problem. I have a Bitza that has an aluminium disc frame from a 700c hybrid, a carbon "suspension delete" fork to replace the hugely heavy SR Suntour 60mm travel thing, Hydraulic disc brakes with that Giant cable to hyd' handlebar mounted unit. Flat mount calipers on adaptors mounted to the post mount frame and fork... YES you can go that way too. and either 9x2 Sora or near new 8x2 Claris. What't it worth? Who knows... but it "might" sell for about 1/2 the sum of the value of the parts. I can see it getting the maximum size tyres that will fit and becoming a "don't really care about it" gravel grinder/commuter/pub bike. It's really not worth selling.

Same thing happens to me.....how much is my 1982 trek road bike? I don’t know......I know how much money I put on it....Ritchie fork, dura ace down tube shifter, wheelset, seat tube, Thompson stem, gator skin tires, 105 front and rear derailleurs, Shimano ultegra chain, etc..........nobody is going to pay what I put in. I will keep it forever!! Take care and good luck on the sale.

I bet people will tell you to replace the chains anyway. Always amazed me how uptight some people are about that stuff. Price is a tough one. I feel like in my area there is no market for this stuff at all. I had a gorgeous early 90's rockhopper build that I easily had $800 into, I was asking $400 for it and getting offers at half of that. It sadly was just sold for parts and whatever was left and that I couldn't use went to scrap.

First, loved the music playing during the parts swapover. Second, I wonder if you (and Russ, since he's selling a few) could actually do better selling these bikes directly to your subscribers, if you are willing to ship 'em. There's already one person below who wants the Norco. I have to believe people will want to buy a bike from the guy they like watching that was featured in some of the videos they enjoyed here.

Hey spindatt, do you have any special method for perfect zeroing of the handlebar & fork?
@bretmohler9719

take a straight edge like ruler or something you know is not bowed and rest it against the fork legs between the spokes. you should not have a nice reference point to look down over the bars and compared how parallel the bars are in the foreground to the straight item in the background. like this method kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXm1ZapjiaZ_Y9k

Clearly I am guilty of building at least 5 "dad" bikes. And yes after each ride I more or less rebuild it to something ever better. Now - everyone can go and buy a new vehicle. But bottom line, I seem to really much prefer the challenge to build something from what originally seems worthless. Can't really explain why. But I clearly love doing it.
