Swapping from Calor Gas Butane to Flo Gas Gaslight bottles

Hello and welcome to our latest Vlog
In this Vlog we swap from the Calor Gas Butane bottles to the FloGas Gaslight Bottles.
The main reason for doing this is the fact that it is almost impossible to tell how much gas you have in your standard Calor Bottles, we do carry 2 so not a great issue when you run out. However, we are back off to France in a few weeks and apparently Calor Gas is almost impossible to get in France. We will be doing all our cooking on the BBQ as well as running the fridge on gas, because of the hotter temperatures and we just didn’t want to end up running out. I made the decision to go this way following a comment from the Caravan Vlogger on my last vlog and how he has done the same and not regretted it.
If you don’t have a bottle its £99 for a full one and then every time after that its £54.

I always turn it the wrong way haha. Not seen those pipes before. Those bottle straps are a nightmare, if I undo them takes me ages to get it on right! They fit in ok I think and you won't run out of gas. I always run one down and replace it, so I've always got a full one. The problem I have with safefill is where you fill them up, few and far between where I live...

Lol at least I am not the only one twisting it the wrong way, I am quite pleased with how it has all worked out, Plenty of gas, we know how much we have, fits in the front locker with very little impact. To be fare I haven't even considered the availability of Safefil locations, I will see how we get on with the Gaslight, I don't think we are going to run out in France. :-)

Hi pal....the two red calor gas bottles do in fact contain propane not butane....& you could weigh them to determine how much gas is remaining within using a set of bathroom scales....hope this helps All the best in your caravan vacations....😎😎

You could always sell your Propane bottles to reduce your outlay. I believe they make good prices because of the shortage of Calor bottles at the moment

Great video 👏can i ask what is the weight of two 6kg of calor full ? Plus what is the total weight of two flogas light bottles full .i am going to do the same .

Thank you. The 6kg Calor bottles that I used to have were 7 to 10kg's empty and 15 to 17kgs full. So that was for a 6kg bottle, I swapped to a 10kg gas light, and the weight of that is 5kg's empty and 15.4kgs full. So worse case, I am about the same weight but another 4kgs of gas. How come you never went Safefill? It’s what I did. Same pigtail as the calor bottles and to refill a 10kg bottle is less than £10 at a autogas filling station. Autogas filling stations are also widely available in Europe. Yes the sag I’ll bottles are more expensive but what you save on refills and pigtails, they work out more cost effective in the longterm

Hi P, In all honesty, I am not 100 % sure., My outlay has just been £198.00 for the 2 off 10kg bottles, with the safe fill for the same it would have been about £450. So bigger initial outlay I agree with you though that over time it would have worked out cheaper, the 7.5kg are not much less than the 10lgs. I do like to have 2 bottles when we are out an about so that we can have that uninterrupted use use of the gas. I may take a look after France and swap out one of the Gaslight for a safefill. Hi, I actually put them on the FACEBOOK marketplace they sold within a matter of hours. It helped towards the cost of the new bottles. Hope that helps and happy camping. James

Hi I bought it from our local Caravan Dealers Lowdham Leisure in their accessories shop. I think you can buy the 27mm connector online along with a braded hose.

biggest problen i had was getting the plastic style refills ,locally calor gas easy ,had to travel a round journey of 3 hours to middle of Edinburgh at weekend as neartest place I could get a refill ,are there a lot less places that sell these

Hi, from Experiance Home Base and Costco do them. So, I have always used HomeBase. I have now, however, swapped to SafeFill, and we are lucky there is a place to top them up close to us.

Should have gone Safefill. The flowgas are even more expensive than calor to refill. 4-5 refills will pay for a Safefill bottle now.

@@CaravanEscapades101 saying that, 2 local filling stations near us have stopped selling LPG. We are lucky because we have a bottle seller that sells LPG too, so unlikely to stop.

Hi Peter Thanks for commenting , I will still look into Safefill as an option, The problem I have with safefill is where you fill them up, few and far between where I live. I also didn't have long before going to France to get it sorted and didn't know how much Propane I had left. So went for the Gaslight from Homebase. Hello, thanks for watching, my previous caravan we had the stupid carrier under the caravan, In fact I had a spare wheel stolen from that carrier. With this caravan the spare wheel is actually supposed to be in the front locker, it has a retaining point for it. I do a bit of Jiggling around with loading and the nose weight comes out at about 95kg. I find that works really well for us. Happy Camping, James

SAFEFILL SAFEFILL every time, I use mine to heat the house CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP... £12 to refill your size, .65p. a litre...your paying an absolute fortune you can fill these on the continent.or on garage forecourts in UK. Sorry to say you've dropped one huge clanger, Much easier to swop over with swivel connections. Cost me £25 monthly to heat my house... Ditch yours buy SAFEFILL ..

Hi Thanks for commenting, I have saved nose weight and increased the amount of gas I carry. The 6kg metal bottles are 17kg in weight full and the 10kg Gaslight bottles are 15.4kgs full. Thanks for watching James

Saving on nose weight ..if you new what your nose weight was you would have been savy enough to have actually measured it...On the basis you haven't Measured it and only needed one 10 Kg bottle not two of the things because you can't top them up abroad then as you can see you've dropped an expensive clanger...

@@muddymarvellous Hi thanks again for commenting, There was no need for measuring the nose weight in this Vlog as it was about the Gas Bottles, I do measure the nose weight with a calibrated gauge before every trip and load accordingly. The reason I went for the Gas Light over the safe fill, is 2 fold, 1) The high initial outlay for 2 Safe fill Bottles 2) The lack of places to fill them in our local area. How could you posssibly know he's doubled his nose weight? Nose weight is not just your gas bottles and the 2 bottles he has now put in are less weight than the 2 he replaced. When you go back to school for supplemental maths, grab some English lessons, too, and they'll teach you the difference between "your" and "you're".
