I got my buddy one of those 2009 STS-V "Heaton" M122's off the 'Bay. I got him a Super Sniper 1250 but we couldn't get past the need for a $2000 electric fuel pump and re-engineering the old car's entire electrical system in order to feed it. At one point I thought it would be good use of underhood room ('68-'72 GM A-body) to make the M122's inlet face forward and drive the gears with a jackshaft i.e. crank-belt->pulley#1-> shaft->pulley#2=>blower-belt. Went as far as to source a bunch of Harley CV45 clone carbs to feed the blower's front-facing inlet. THEN I saw YOUR setup and I realized that pretty much copying what you do except feeding the rear inlet with a pair of Weber 45DCOE clones ought to all fit under a stock hood, What do you think? I think we got it, finally thanks to you. PS - I want to use a '65 or '66 Tri Power milled down parallel to the crank and "level" with the front of the front carb-pad. It would cut through the "roof" of the runners feeding cyl's #5 and #6. Pretty sure that attaching (six carb bolts + bronze welding) a flat plate on top that had been "opened up" to match and "feed" the resulting holes shouldn't hurt performance very much at all. It would be heavenly if like a 1" aluminum spacer stood on that plate and supported a similar plate opened up to match the blower outlet. < That plate would have the bypass-feed port made on it, too.

And the merc blowers usually have an electromagnetic clutch so it negatites the need for a bypass. And it allows u to have the blower on a button like Mad Max!!!
@simoncryan78324 ай бұрын
They have to have a clutch because they are screw compressors not blowers so bypassing them does not work (screw compressors compress the air internally, Roots blowers are constant volume displacers and do no internal compression - that is why bypassing them stops the blower doing wok and consuming power). To stop a screw compressor consuming large amounts of power they must be stopped rotating, hence the clutch.

Ray! Firstly great job! Secondly since you are talking about the intercoolers and charge air temp - since that big tvs supports 575hp in order to keep the air cooler - why not install a bigger pulley? Run it slower- less heat, heck it might even fix the idle issue and you could skip the bypass. Realistically speaking the caddy makes 200hp stock and you are not replacing any parts on it so a 575hp blower is way overkill (you would need to run 40psi of boost to get it to that power (NA 200hp at sea level is 14.7psi of atmospheric pressure). Something to think about

I stumbled upon this video and all I have to say is wow. Absolutely fascinating Ray. Nothing interests me more than something unique that is done on a low budget. You really have my wheels spinning. I have three projects. Two Pontiacs with the 3800 N/A V6. One I want to supercharge and one I intend to turbo. The L67 3800 M90 has it's limits so I was thinking of twin-charging it with a small turbo. Now I'm curious about the Jag M112. Seems to me this would allow me to go further with the boost and boy would it look cool. The third project is a 4.8 LS Nova. I was going to turbo charge this too, but I wonder what the larger TVS supercharger would do instead. The built in intercoolers are trick. Have you considered 3D printing for the SC to intake adapters? If you had a 3D scan of both mounting surfaces you could merge the two in software and customize it as needed and then send the file to a 3d printing company that can print with high temp filament. Is there a source for details on the different superchargers used by jag/Rover over the years? a Wiki perhaps? Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing.

@raysoto19694 ай бұрын
@@davenava6886there have been many builds with people running carbs on those M90's. They always ran well. I've also learned that when the coating starts to fall off the rotors... it doesn't affect boost at any measurable amount. However, buying a used supercharger with the coating falling off is usually an indicator that the supercharger is worn out, and will usually run audibly louder.

I got the eyebrow ground off on the TVS blower I bought but I probably hit the gears a bunch of times. hopefully the damage isn't so bad that the gears are off balance or don't spin like they should. I couldn't figure out how to remove the gears. on my old 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, I sprayed water/methanol through the gen 3 eaton m90 and it cleaned all the coating off the rotors. I didn't notice any difference in boost pressure. you might be able to replace the rotor pack in that supercharger with the worn rotors.as far as the TVS blower being too small for the Cadillac 500 engine, I have a Eaton M90 gen 5 on my LQ4 and it makes in-between 4 and 5 lbs of boost. I broke the transmission, a th350 after I put the supercharger on. it was a stock rebuild th350 so adding the blower increased the hp/tq to a level the th350 couldn't handle, maybe like 450hp/450tq.
@raysoto19694 ай бұрын
@lifeishard1211 I think it is ok if you accidentally bumped the teeth on the outside of the supercharger gears... they don't actually make contact there... they contact each other deeper in. And I don't think there will be any issue with imbalance as the gear diameter is quite small, especially with such a minute amount of metal missing from the gears.... It is, however, very important to remove all metal shavings completely! Before adding any supercharger oil. Use very high pressure air and make sure ALL shavings are removed %100
@stevenbelue54964 ай бұрын
Thats interesting, Richard Holdener put an m90 on an LS and he said he believed it was a restriction as it made less power. As long as the blower can move more cfm than the engine your making boost, not sure if a little blower would put out enough for 500cid but the caddy engine would be low rpm so you could spin the blower at a much higher ratio rpm wise.

A physics question. The blower has an intake hole of a certain area, is their anything to be gained by fitting carbs/ throttle body's with more cross sectional area? Like when fitting big carbs to an engine with an inlet of 40cm2 and carb of 50cm2 - atmosphere blows air in at 14.7 psi, once zero psi is reached at the 40cm2 you can't flow anymore, (. you can't suck harder than zero psi- a suck is just a pressure drop, atmosphere being the blow) Air speed and flow is dictated by the smallest part of the inlet up wind of blower. Tell me the thinking behind the 4 barrel intake? The throttle body your using is definitely the best option.
@raysoto19694 ай бұрын
@peterjohn3180 I know what you are saying... The hole for the carburetor is much larger than the intake on the supercharger. But you need to consider the individual venturi sizes on the carburetor... All four equal less than the intake on the supercharger.

@teemann83794 ай бұрын
@@raysoto1969 that really doesn't apply to power adders the same as, the low end loss, comes from the vacuum signal from the cylinder being farther and weaker on the jets in the carb, but the blower is sucking on them, and once it hits boost in should be in the power band, so you can get away with much longer runners and plenum volume, because the power adders makes up for the loss a na motor would have.

I don’t know where you get your info from but you can still get all of the SC mentioned serviced no problem and it’s fairly cheap. And to say they were for diesels is not telling the full story because those SC have since been redesigned for car use for over a half century. You are comparing factory OEM chargers to aftermarket ones. Which one you think puts out the most power? I’ll give you a hint. It’s not the OEM ones. Why do you think a brand like whipper sells different size SC? It’s because the bigger it the more air it moves. I 100% agree that what you have is the cheaper option but your reasons as to why is way off. People that spend weiland and B&M prices do so because they know they’re getting a quality part that will make the power they want. If you’re building a budget build then the OEM ones will do just fine. Sometimes people don’t mind spending the money. And like I said there are companies out there that can service all of the screw type blowers with any part you need. They have to because there are a lot of sanctioning bodies that require a certain size blower and these companies are doing a service to those who run in these classes. Gassers to fuel altered you name it.

Anyways keep up the hard work and keep killing it!
@raysoto19694 ай бұрын
@burnz3132 It makes 8psi with the somewhat large V-belt pulley I fabricated for the supercharger. I haven't dyno'd it, so actual horsepower is speculative. But it did go from barely being able to chirp the tires to now able to smoke the tires. Hence, I say it's feels like a big block. Is it unreasonable to say this 260 engine went from the stock 110 horsepower to 220 boosted? 🤔
@burnz31324 ай бұрын
@@raysoto1969 Yes! You’d basically need to double the atmospheric pressure to double the power. Not to say perfect fueling and as much timing at that 8psi wouldn’t net ya a big chunk of that (without going into knock ect…). But doubling it is not gonna happen. Low end will always be a positive displacement SC’s golden area, and it’s definitely not making that 8psi out the gate. But look into some “basic” tuning and fluid/ gas dynamics as well. I think it could help ya with the wording and understanding what’s happening with timing, fueling, and boost. Especially when working with the curve. I do think you should try throwing in a decent cam (in the 260, or try some other OE cams from other GM motors that will interchange), and toss the bigger TVS on it. You’ll still get that low end pull. But you’ll be able to take it up higher in the revs and carry it to where that 260 wants to be NA. The motor doesn’t know what boost is it’s just doing what it was made to do, so it will have the same characteristics under boost. Just more of it!, lol. Just food for thought. I love the carb setup if for no other reason than air cooling and nostalgia, lol. Hopefully you’ve taken what I’m saying as helpful not trying to come across as dick. Love seeing others do fabrication and doing well! Keep it up and keep pushing forward!

Hi Ray, I’m from Australia I’ve got a roadster with a Cleveland 351 with two supercharges m90s and I have that problem when it idles. Can you explain where you’ve got that valve and how it works please I love your set ups i’ll try sending you a picture I’m not real good with these phones

@@charlietabone6162 The bypass valve is from a supercharged Mini Cooper. It is arranged so that excess pressure from the lower intake is recirculated to the inlet of the supercharger. This valve is open at idle and closed at full throttle
