some cool information that may set you at ease. Steve Irwin was killed by a short tail stingray and these are southern stingray. There have been only 4 recorded deaths by short tail stingrays in Australia since 1949. Many people are stung a year. An world wide estimate of over 4,000 a year but only one or two stings become fatal. As you can see it’s extremely rare for a sting ray to actually kill a human.

Atina B. Stingray City is a popular tourist attraction in Grand Cayman. Stingrays have associated this location with easy meals since they’re fed in order to attract them. It’s pretty incredible seeing how gentle these animals really are with humans, especially considering that they are wild animals in their natural habitat. Just make sure you do the shuffle and keep your feet on the floor as much as possible so you don’t risk stepping on them... and also if you hold one, don’t pull it up out of the water too much.

I went to Stingray City, the water was rough when we went in December of 2018. They didn’t take us out to the Sandbar because the water was rough. I was about 4’7 then and the water was above my head, cause it wasn’t out at the Sandbar. The water was being throw into my mouth and it was hard to see them from the waves. It was fun, but I had to go back and get lifejacket and snorkel gear from the boat, cause I was being thrown around, I’m not a strong swimmer. We also only got to stay about 20 mins but it was fun. I want to go back when we can go to the Sandbar.

This looked so fun! If I ever go here I’m totally doing that. I actually swam with dolphins and sting rays when I was 7. I remember the sting rays jumping all around me for food. They felt slick and a little rough. Not sand paper rough, but rough like the surface of a human tongue as weird as it sounds. I think the ones I swam with had their stingers removed though.
