Why would you put tile in without a gravel cart with a conveyer belt to put 3-4" of drainage rock on top of it?????????????

Sports field designers like to use a gravel back fill to help increase the intake of water after a rain. We have designed a boot for an older version of our plow for exactly that purpose. It used an adjustable gate to maintain gravel level from around the tile to within a set distance from the surface and had an opening where a conveyor or loader could dump gravel in that would allow it to flow around the tile before the dirt dropped back in. For agricultural purposes, such a practice would be prohibitively expensive and very time consuming. We are often installing 800-1000 feet of tile per acre in 5-100 acre fields which would require a lot of stone. Also worth mentioning is that in the spring and fall, field conditions in our area typically would not fair well for a dump truck and conveyor. Even with some of our heavy clay soils, CPDT installed in 1973 is still functioning today without the use of a gravel back fill. While gravel might increase the initial transfer rate, as long as the field dries off a few days after a hard rain, that is fine for Agriculture. Sports, not so much.

There seems to be a lot of difference in opinion between USA farm drainage companies and European ones. I am in the USA. I see the videos on youtube of the ones in Europe being installed and I don't think I've ever seen it being installed without stone backfill. Its like they would not ever even consider doing it any other way. Then the ones here in the USA are never stone backfilled. In fact, I have not been able to find a farm drainage company in the USA that even owns the equipment needed to do stone backfill...which might possibly factor in on this discussion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWqUi2mOgM2Kb9E
