I knew a gal that left the Amish that had five brothers that SA'd her from 12 -16. She told her parents and they said she had to stand up for herself. One day she overheard her brothers saying they were inviting their male friends over for a Hard Cider and FUN" night. It was the last straw. Somehow she managed to makeshift a weapon from large needles being bent plus other sharp items. So when her brother was just about to @#!*&%, she got it out of her pocket and used it on his nether region with several strokes. She got punished but she always kept saying "I stood up for myself!" She left the Order when she was 16.

First, your friend is f*'*×ing awesome👏! Second, her parents told her to "stand up for herself," (which is an awful response to the situation, but sadly not even close to the worse I've heard from survivors.), and she stood up for herself, but still got punished? Figures😡. I hope that scared them off, at least for a while. Any system that is breeding r**e gangs needs to be reevaluated, dismantled, and rebuilt. That goes for mainstream society as well, but these super conservative groups tout themselves as being superior to everyone else. They are the chosen/righteous, but if that's the case, there wouldn't be these problems, right? Then you can't question things. When there isn't any room for questioning, there isn't any room for change.

At my local farmers market there is a bunch of local Amish that attend it. A father was there with his wife and kids. She had a baby crawling age she was I think about 9 months old. She was being a typical baby. So adorable she kept trying to crawl away. All of a sudden the father hauled back and smacked the baby as hard as he could. The two men on the other side of him held him down until the police arrived me and a couple of other women took the baby and would not give her back until the police arrived. They had three other young children along with the baby. They were placed with a local foster family and eventually, the parents lost all parental rights to those children. I am friends with the woman who ended up adopting them. They are the cutest kids ever. I am so glad they were able to get out of that situation.

At a family dinner, a 11 year old boy asked about the earth being round and not flat; his grandfather backhanded him so hard that he sustained a head injury. They allowed my husband and I to take the boy to the hospital. Police arrived but allowed us to take him back to the family after treatment. Supposedly, the grandfather was questioned. Who knows?

I'm astonished action was taken. I'm happy for those kids being protected. I wish that Police department could teach the rest of the country. Thank you. I lived over 40 yrs near the oldest Amish settlement in NYS, the Troyer Amish. Uneducated people think these communities are quaint and so Christian. I know firsthand that they are not. Thank you for helping to shed light on what can, and does, take place. The Amish community is just a microcosm of our world. Stop glamorizing them and start seeing them as human communities where perpetrators are protected and support those courageous enough to come forward, speaking out about the hidden secrets.

I am thankful you mentioned the beatings among Amish children, Lizzie. I grew up Amish, and this does not happen only among Swartzentruber Amish. Amish toddlers have been beaten to the point where they have gone into shock and stopped crying completely from the beating. Many of the beatings do not cause physical scars, but scar spirituality, mentally, and emotionally. l pray and hope with all my heart that the Amish start becoming more exposed for this.

Thank you @Traci063! I find healing along with other former Amish by fighting to bring a voice to Amish women and children. I agree that some Amish are much harsher than others, however, I also believe that a big part of why non-Amish know so little about the Amish is because generations of beatings among the Amish has kept them in silence. It is very hard to speak against so much evil and go public with it, when expression, opinion, etc. hardly exists because of beatings. Thank you for your support!

Most of us, including me (that is the old me) have a romantic version of the Amish in our heads...they seem very idyllic and peaceful. Having the blinds come up is very disconcerting, and it makes me realize that the children and women of the Amish (I realize not all, but many) need to be protected and heard. @@lisalu910 Sadly true. I'm a former Independent Fundamental Baptist, and I remember a book sale, with several of us women, me included, buying the horrible, child abuse advocating book, "To Train Up a Child". I didn't know what it was about, and I was horrified to read it! I never followed their terrible advice, but I'm sure many did, along with "spare the rod, spoil the child". So sad and horrible that child abuse is not only accepted, but advocated in these sects!

My mother was in the hospital and an Amish woman was in the next bed. She was visited by her husband and an older woman. T hey pulled the curtains around the best and my mother heard the older woman instruct the younger woman in bed to move over and let the husband lie with her. Then squeaking of the bed commenced. This poor woman recovering from some sort of surgery had to submit to her husbands desires. My mother was horrified!. Later when he left she could hear the woman crying. So sad!! My mother called the nurse and informed them what had happened. She did so quietly. The next time the nurses came in and out taking temps, filling water cups etc. So at least this poor woman could have a break and recover from her surgery.

I spoke German to one of the ladies on day. She was shocked and came to me and said in a question if I really spoke German. I spoke back in German saying Ja (yes) She told he they had a Amish man in the burn unit because he fell into a big fire pit when he went to a man’s house to by a tractor 🚜. He had been in the unit 4 months already. It was really sad so I prayed for him.

Ok...... on your first date there was actually any touching or kissing, that boy took advantage of your innocence AGAIN....... BUNDLING is a traditional practice that today is only practiced by the ultra-orthodox. In conservative communities, dating is done in secret, therefore they will enter the girl's house in darkness and spend time alone. It involves a man and woman lying in bed together, fully clothed, without touching, and talking until the early hours of the morning. It has origins in the Bible, in the Book of Ruth, and was also once a common Jewish practice. It was practiced in Europe for centuries and then brought to America. Nowadays, many of the more modern Amish communities actually condemn this rule and view it as an outdated practice In the most progressive communities, young couples sometimes head off into town together for an evening meal. They are allowed to simply hang out and get to know each other. Today, dating in the Amish community happens more openly and frequently than once

I wanted to hold and protect teenage you from your abusers, your potential abusers and from all those who should have protected and defended you, but instead chose silence, rejection and outright solidarity with the rapist. I lived near a Amish and Mennonite Community and, I can’t say that they romanticized it, in Pleasant, IN! It was a very small Amish Community , I hadn’t lived there all that long but, I done knew some people living in the area through my religion, it was more less focused the odd things that they did. Someone pointed out to me that they were the outcast Amish, I don’t know how true that was! I was a young mother at the time and with my son having Autism, his Med Wavier was approved a year after we moved there and, so, we had people coming and going to help with therapies and such. Well, this young Amish girl came to our house to offer her services, she wanted to make money for her family, I said no, thank you, I have all the hep, I need! And, yet she came again a few wks later, I said, I done told you, no thank you, I done have the help, I need! Yet, she then, came again in another 3 wks, I was trying to be as polite as, I could but, I was getting frustrated at this point, she wouldn’t take no for a answer, I guess her family thought if she kept coming back, I’d give in and, would allow her to come in my home to help me, she came one more time, yes in 3 wks again, at that point, I just didn’t answer the door, she continued to knock for awhile, but, I wanted to put a end to it and,I thought that would be! Still she kept continuing to come and, I just wouldn’t answer when, she knocked but, I was not going to contend with it no more!

I would like to hear something about healthy sexual development and how people can learn about sexuality snd dominance and submission in a healthy way which does not scar them and limit their potential. This is not just a problem for Amish people. It is a pervasive problem in human societies. I am not sure I have met someone who talked about a good coming of age. Sex and development appears to be rife with shame and trickery. Does one succeed in life by mastering the trickery or is there indeed a better way?

My mother's Amish parents came to the States in the late 1800's early 1900's. My mother was born in September of 1916. I was born 1954, I was her last born. Unfortunately, I know very little about my mother's, or aunt's and uncle's childhoods. It wasn't ever spoken of in our home. I was born late in my mother's life, she was 39. In the family photo album as a child, I saw pictures of her mother and her grandmother, they were wearing head coverings. I also saw a picture of her mother and father, who was in a military uniform, whith the children all around. My mother and father were Baptist for many years, before my older brother and myself were born. As I got older, I realized that my mother was different than other kids mothers. Even in the 50s and 60s most women were not gardening, they were not canning all the families canned vegetables and fruits that were needed. ....They were not making their own jams and jellies, or baking their own breads, cookies and cakes, making candies. And they certainly weren't making dishes that no one else ever heard of... basically being called the best cook anybody ever knew. I remember asking about the pictures that I saw in the family album. Mom explained only that her family were German Amish. Over the years I would ask questions about what that meant. She would say she didn't remember too much, or that that was the past and it didn't matter. There was a time when she told me that when her father came back from war, he had a metal plate in his head, and he was very different than when he left. She said that as time went on the the girls had to be sent away because things got bad. Her brothers were much older then she, so they stayed with their mother (who wasn't in the best of health)...and their father. My mother was the youngest of the family and was sent up to Detroit to live with her mother's mom. I don't know how old she was when she came to Detroit. Her grandmother had an established maternity home here, I have a picture of her standing on the porch of that house, and a picture of the sign in front. I also have one of grandmother's business cards. Pregnant mothers would come and stay at the end of their pregnancy, birth the baby, and then leave after recovery. (I'm wondering just NOW if these mothers were Amish unwed mothers!!! Annie Pieffier had been a midwife in the Amish community, before she left. I know that Amish teenagers are often sent away before they begin to show, and only come back after the baby is born!!!) As I got older I would ask more questions about Mom's homelife when she was young. She usually changed the subject but I got little snitches of information here and there. She had lived in Minnesota, then they moved to Pennsylvania, where she was living when she was sent to Detroit. I was always fascinated by my Amish heritage, especially when she would come up with some German words and phrases every now and then. I remember one time asking her why she would never talk about her childhood, or tell me about her family. She said what's the use of speaking of it, there's nothing that can be done about it, and the past is the past. At that point I was old enough to realize that some horrific things must have happened to her and sisters, and the memories was just too painful for her to speak about. She often spoke of the love she had for my Uncle Johnny and Uncle Jim, whom I also thought the world of. She explain that she was the baby of the family (her nickname was Dolly), and they had always protected her. She did talk about her life with her grandmother and how much that she loved her, enjoyed helping her birth the babies and taking care of the mothers. My mother seemed to know a lot about medical things, I think she caught the bug from my great- grandmother...because she always was reading medical books! After my mother died, I was speaking with my mother's sister Pearl on the phone. I asked her why my mom would never speak about their childhood. Pearl was very surprised that she refused to tell me... She confirmed my worst fears... that all the girls were being sexually and physically abused, so they were sent away to live with relatives. She said that it was especially hard on my mom because she's so loved her brother Johnny and Jim. I thank you so much for this nterview. It explains a lot of things for me. I knew that certain Amish groups were more strict. And I'm aware that sexual abuse occurs among in Amish families, but that's a reality everywhere; sin and lust... are everywhere. Many families live dark lives in their silence and shame. I'll be 70 this year. The puzzle of my mother's life is clearer now. I lived in Kentucky for over 20 years. There were Amish families all around me. I found the young and young families to be very friendly and loving. The older people were guarded, but never impolite, and even pulled me out of a ditch one wintry day! Some of the Amish started reading the Englisher Bible, as a result moved away from the rules and regulations of the Amish life, and joined non-denominational, or Baptist Churches. I was blessed beyond measure to have them in my life. It was as though I was able to finally connect to a part of my family I never knew. You have done the same... and the TRUTH ALWAYS sets one free! 💖🙌🏼💖

Snitz is a descendant of an ancient practice often called Bundling - it dates back to pre-Celtic times in Europe. The big differences are that there was normally a sack or a board involved - the man would be tied in a sack from the waist down, or there would be a big wooden board in between them, and most importantly the couples was usually betrothed! The idea was to see if they could share a bed compatably because if they were getting married, they'd need to be able to do that. How it ended up as a -first date- practice with all the rolling around added in is certainly a mystery, especially with the other cultural attitudes towards physical touch that the Amish have.

Lizzie is absolutely amazing and strong and I'm so glad she found her way out and is able to help others. My mom was a woman's advocate and it is such vital work and I'm glad Lizzie is able to be that for Amish victims.

You could only make choices based on the options and information you had in front of you. That things "kept falling apart" was not something you had much, if any, control over. This is something I'm learning in my own recovery journey, and I hope is something you are able to process and internalize in your own recovery journey.

Lizzie.. you are a modern day Wonder Woman!!! Just as Shelise said, the energy in that courtroom when you made that statement.. I can only imagine! I hope that everyone gets the opportunity to have that kind of support coming forward. It is a process, but remember that you play a key role in the future for everyone you support, and even far beyond that. These groups will have end someday. Maybe far in the future, but you have aided in so many ways to the progress. THANK YOU!! Love and support as always!🖤

@@jamespattenden605 Responsibly breeding dogs is not the same as running a puppy mill. There are many animal breeders who treat their animals well. The horse industry is not perfect by any means, but there are several owners/breeders/trainers who provide their horses with very good care and don't abuse them.

Rest and reflection is doing something for yourself. That's self care. Trying different things like driving, spending time with the dogs, taking a walk are also you using skills to feed your soul. You filling yourself up instead of looking for someone else to make you feel good

This was an incredible interview!!! Wow!!! What an amazing woman!!! I grew up not far from Lancaster PA~ which has a huge Amish community. I now live in Texas ~ I never knew there was such a huge difference in communities. I have friends that grew up in Lancaster and one thing I know is that a lot of the young people would sneak out and party and drink with the local non Amish kids. And that some even had cars that their community had no idea about and they would hide them on friends properties etc. Thank You Lizzie ~ I'm sorry for your abuse. I pray for healing for you and all the victims!! Thank you for your powerful work!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️

Lizzy please know you're not alone. So many young Amish ladies that go through this. I live very close to the Amish community. We always would go there to buy fruit and vegetables. We no longer go there, after watching these horror stories. Thank You for being so strong to tell us about how it really is behind closed doors. I'm so sorry you had to endure this torture. xoxo Sending you Love and Prayers ❤❤

This raucous noise made by the Amish outside the newly wed couple's window reminds me of something that happens in the musical "Oklahoma." They called it a "Shivaree" and I thought it was an odd custom.

My parents bought me this box when I was 8 or something. Said it was for later. It was a kit for your first period. My "talk" was Mom making me read "the illustrated encyclopedia of sex". I knew what a period was, and I'd seen my mother use feminine stuff for yrs...but it was supposed to happen around 12, I got mine in before I was 10. Been climbing trees and thought I'd hurt myself.

I just recently realized that my home state has legislation in place allowing the Amish to remove children from public schooling after grade 8. While I understand each faith has different guidelines they follow for any number of reasons, I think it is imperative to give our children the best chance of success which includes as much education as possible.

I lived in a city surounded by Amish. My friend was around 18 years old and i was in my 30's. She came to my house one day and asked if she could stay with me. She explained to me that her dad was after her to have sex with him. I told her she could definitely stay with me. She did. Her parents found out that she was with me and came to my house. They demanded that she go back home with them. I told them absolutely not. She wasnt going anywhere with them. She stayed with me for a while and then left to go live with her relatives far away. She did not return home as she feared having to have sex with her dad. This is a true happening as I was a part of that firsthand. Some people think the Amish are some wholesome bunch of people. I can attest that some of them are diabolical. Some steal as one took my truck without me knowing. Drove to town to get coffee for him and his buddy. The guy ended up sliding off the road because it was icy and ended up in a farmer's field. He would have gotten away with it except he couldnt get my truck out of the snow in the field. Needless to say i was irate. I also know from my own experience that the women are strictly under the orders of the men. Women are lower in class and are not to voice their opinions in public or speak out for what they believe in against any man and never against their husband even though it is not right. As far as their "religion", that's another ideal in itself. Their "church" consists of one man speaking or reading a German Bible. The people attending cannot understand what is being said because it is in high German. My friend told me this. I told her there are Bibles that are in English and you can actually read and understand what is being said. I gave her one. She was so happy to learn the truth in what The Bible actually said. I believe and told her at that time that by reading and speaking in high German, that prevents the people from learning the real truth/s. The bishops are then able to make the rules of his people according to his own thoughts and beliefs because very few could dispute the truth. They all believ the bishop is speaking directly from the Bible. Its not true. They make up things that are not in God's Word. They twist it to keep the people contained in their group. Thats how they maintain their "society".
