Hello lovelies! I'm so excited to finally be taking a look at the entire line of Daniel Smith watercolors between this video and the next. I did my best to calibrate the video to accurately show the correct colors while I'm painting each swatch and make it as pleasant as possible to watch, but the scans are also available as high resolution downloads on my Patreon. I really hope you enjoy it, but if the swatch and chat/stream of consciousness style video isn't your jam, I have lots of other more polished videos here on the channel for you as well. Rhodonite genuine oxidizes so when exposed to air it turns to a brown shade (and yes this information was in otokano's video) I have the paint myself and I love the color especially when combined with jadeite genuine it's makes this nice soft beautiful grey in my opinion!

According to one of the employees I spoke to, they discontinued the cadmiums in part because their factory is right on the Duwamish River in Seattle, which is an environmentally sensitive waterway that they’re trying to clean up after more than a century of terrible pollution. From what I understand, it’s much easier to reclaim the cobalts and keep them out of the runoff than it is the cadmiums, so for the sake of the local environmental health, they ditched the cads.

Regarding rewetting, I think some dots may have more gum arabic from being at the top of the tube and makes it harder to rewet. My DS Potter's Pink is easier to rewet as I get further into the tube. I always tried to mix the excess gum arabic back into the tube before, but when I was on the DS factory tour recently, John Cogley said to just pour off the excess that occurs in heavier pigments. Another thing I got from the tour was that they don't use jewelry grade stones to make primatek pigments, it's what's leftover that the jewelry/mining industries can't use because the pieces are too small. I think if you're okay with minerals and gemstones being mined and made into jewelry and used for electronics and industrial uses, you should be okay with paint If you look around you, everything made of metal or stone is mined/quarried. Plastics are made with oil from deep inside the earth, clay is dug up to make ceramics, silica to make glass, electronics require heavy metals--so we're all culpable for what we consume from the earth that takes millennia to replace. We need to care about all of it, and be aware of scale of use :) And the rambling is why I love swatch with me videos :)

Wow! Tour notes from the DS factory? Awesome! Feel free to post some more. That tip about pouring off the excess gum arabic is gold, I always stress so much stirring stirring with tiny toothpicks, worrying it’s not getting in deep enough and the crazy expensive tube is ruined. Any more on this, that you can recall? Thanks for what you posted so far. The DS factory is on the opposite side of the world to me. 😜

That's good to know that it's the scraps for the jewelry industry! I actually have a purse (it was a gift) that was made from the leather that was a by product of the furniture industry. I don't think I would have bought it on my own but nice to know all the pieces are being used.

​@@Roslyngal Just that John said that the extra gum arabic is sometimes from making the heavier pigments malleable enough to get into the tube, so the extra from settling wasn't needed. I usually use a drop of glycerin if I need a little softer paint for the mineral pigments like viridian. I made some more comments about the tour in Oto Kano's Lapis Lazuli video comments if that's of interest. It was an amazing opportunity to see their operation (all paint is basically mixed and packaged in one room) and get to see it all--and we got to play with lots of paint, I have tons of good sized samples and a free watercolor stick! They only shut down their operation a few days a year so very limited access. Thom talked about their new half pans (they had to use one of their demo spaces and we couldn't enter because they need to keep it very clean and dust-free) and how they are hand pouring them in 3-4 layers depending on the pigment qualities. And the watercolor sticks use a lot more pigment than the 15ml tubes, start out about the size of hot dogs and are dehydrated for 30 days to make the concentrated little sticks, so I'm going to start buying the sticks when I need new paints. I got a Quin Red stick and it works just like a pan in my travel palette.

@@InLiquidColor It's the exact same think with kolinsky hair! We use the useless parts of the tail that would be thrown away while the rest goes to the clothing industry. A short of upcycling? I would still not use kolinsky if I didn't know that in Russia these animals must be hunt down. They are a human pest there, increasing in number because of human activity and hunting them down is practised both for protecting the property of the people (they kill chicken etc) but also because the overpopulation of the aggressively reproducing kolinsky can be threatening to the natural fauna and local biodiversity.

I bought the DS dot cards a while ago and wasn't very motivated to take the time to make swatches but I completed all four sheets today while playing your video and it was a much more enjoyable experience than doing it alone. Thanks for all the great videos!

Oh, I had no idea DS had removed all their cadmiums. That's great news for me! My cat has developed quite an appreciation for the luxurious taste of paint water, so even though I do my best to never leave it unattended, I'm also trying to only use non toxic paints as well. ^^

Daniel Smith says that quinapthalone yellow is “limited edition” so maybe they don’t include it on the dot card because they contemplate stopping production.

From what I know, the weird letters/numbers in the PR170 are a special designation of Naphtol Red, for a specific shade or formula.

Hi Denise! I would like to say something about the lapis lazuli genuine :) I own this colour and I love it. I can totally understand why many people don't like it, but to me is so very special. I find the hue so beautiful, I'm in love. I generally love all the light and delicate colours anyway, even if this is not so light in the end. I have no problems making it work (like rewetting and actually paint with it), and I also put it into a pan and let it dry and it really works fine for me. It's perfect for skies and landscape in general. I've seen Oto's video about it, which was fantastic and precise as always, and also all your videos about watercolor swatching, I guess? but I'm kinda sad about your opinion on lapis lazuli. I would be a bit disappointed if Daniel Smith will decide to exclude it from they're range. When I will run out of it, I don't know if I will buy it again, since it's so expensive, but I'm glad I've purchased it at least one time. You say it can be substituted with other colours for sure, so I'd really appreciate if you could tell me some colours I could substitute it with. Sorry for the repetitions, English is not my mother tongue. Thanks anyway for your videos, they are amazing and very useful!

Ooh, the Manganese Blue Hue also has a granulation medium added. It doesn’t granulate like the original does, but it does granulate noticeably.

You really need to play around with DS's Rich Green Gold and Phthalo Green (BS) to get a closer Sap Green to the original and it's only two pigments instead of three. One of the brands uses those two pigments for their sap green, I remember seeing it at my local art supply store, but I can't remember which brand it was now.

It's because their swatch cards gradate diagonally from top left to bottom right.

Winsor and Newton use PY175 as "Lemon Yellow Hue" in their Cotman range, it's super cheap here and easy to get. I think in their main range its called Winsor Lemon.

They use jewelry remnants for making the primatek pigments. They are basically scrap fragments that are otherwise unusable.

gia There was enough on my dot cards to use several times in my sketchbook. It wouldn’t work for a big piece, but definitely enough to play around with! Just be careful because eventually you’ll start to get soggy paper bits in your painting when getting to the last bit of the paint dot.

Both the raw sienna and the burnt sienna have a richness and depth and subtlety to them that is … easier to appreciate with experience? But I do love them both. They have brighter versions of each - the Monte amiata natural sienna and the Italian burnt sienna - and I initially gravitated much more strongly to those, but over about the past year I’ve been pulled back to the originals.

Agree with Denise & Kathryn on the beauty of DS Burnt Sienna, love the subtlety I can get with it and it works so well for urban sketching, landscapes and skintones. I also have come back to it after trying other BS and transparent red oxides. I prefer it's depth to other burnt siennas, however I haven't tried the warmer WN version which a lot of people prefer, but adding a bit of Quin Burnt Orange warms it up enough for me. It's one of my most used colors since I make a version of Jane's Grey with it.

Must be me then (LOL) I love strong bold colours, however combining to greens and blues and yellows is my preferred way of using them. To each it's own preferences as well as the subjects you paint.

@@christinerenaud2869 Not just you, most artists do! I've tried that too, but come back to my earth tones as my secret sauce. Those earthy granulating colors work for me, but I do a lot of landscapes, so depends on technique, genre and style.

I received Cobalt Green Pale in a lot of Daniel Smith tubes I purchased on eBay. I was interested in seeing you swatch this color because it is the most useless and difficult to work with paint I have ever purchased! It separates and granulates blue particles. I didn't know if it was just my tube or not.

Thank you for this video! I'm watching this half a year later to enjoy while making swatch sheets (I don't think I made it through the whole thing last time), and I just wanted to mention that I don't think that Manganese Blue Hue has any white in it. I could be wrong, as this is just from experience, but It seems to just be less finely ground, and has a lot of binder. It granulates heavily when a lot of water is used, and is really quite beautiful, though certainly not as punchy as a standard phthalo blue. I have never had the original Manganese Blue, so I don't know how well it works as a replacement, but I still recommend this color. Plus I find it interesting that a phthalo color can granulate :)

The yellowish/brownish color you see in the Cobalt Green Pale is actually the binder. I was so excited to try the color but it IS the most difficult paint I've owned. They use way too much binder which discolors the single pigment and makes an ugly weird sticky clumps over-granulation effect. BUT if you leech out the binder which can be done very quickly since its a heavy cobalt it completely fixes it! Takes out the yellowy brownish undertone and smooths the color and application out. It looks very slightly bluer and handles sooooo much better now so if anyone loves cobalt greens like I do, it is relatively easy to fix it

Daniel Smith Lapis Lazuli Genuine only costs between about $18.96 - $21.12 depending on the seller; jumps up to $35.45 on eBay. Indanthrone Blue is a very rich and vibrant blue from the tube - use it frequently sometimes with another dark. Have been told I make very nice darks (by my instructors.} Haven't been satisfied with dot cards but I don't use them as you and other KZbin tutorial artists do. Yet I enjoy seeing and learning from the swatches videos.

Do you have a series on what quin., cobalt, cadmium, perinone, etc. colors means? I always wonder why some people love a series of colors with the same descriptor. Is my question clear as mud?

Hi Lisa, not specifically, but I do have a Color Spotlight series. It covers individual colors in depth. I generally don't use cadmiums, but I do have episodes on quins, cobalts, and perylenes within the series.

From what I found the Perm. Red (PR 170 F3RK 70) is apparently coded that way by the manufacturer. PR 170 F3RK 70 has a a high tinting strength and brilliance and is a blue shade, brilliant and very opaque Naphthol. Also, the Perm. Red Deep (PR 170 F5RK) has a high tinting strength and brilliance and is a very strong, blue shade and semi transparent Naphthol. Apparently they are both more lightfast and stable than regular PR 170. Basic difference the F3RK 70 is opaque and the F5FK is semi transparent and slightly darker.

Ok I know who uses the super bright greens! The answer is illustrators, cartoonists, watercolor designers for commercial products like greeting cards and stationery, and abstract artists - people who aren’t trying to hit the true colors of nature.

Conclusively, on what I have found on this is that "permanent" refers to a more permanent or less fugitive paint than previously manufactured by the respective company. Even though the staining could also make sense, I didn't find anything on that. Schmincke's "permanent" paints are all non- or semi-staining whereas Daniel Smith's "permanent" paints seem to vary from 1 to 3 - so that would not make sense imho.

Have you ever tried the Zecchi watercolors? I recently went on a trip to Europe and picked them up in Florence. I searched your channel and didn't see anything but wasn't sure if you did before making KZbin videos. There is a lot of original Heirloom Old Fashioned English lavender that grows at the Olympic Peninsula and they really are mostly a light blue violet color. Wisteria flowers can be white, warm pink to very blue or anywhere in between from bright to pastel . They vary in color so much thats its interesting that they use the name for a paint color.

The Quinacridone Lilac PR122 looks sooooooooooo dark and red on my screen. I was so confused I had to click off and make sure I was looking at PR122. The swatch on Jane Blundell looks accurate. It must just be this video or the lighting or something

I sent Daniel Smith an email request for a copy of their color brochure and was (almost rudely) informed that they do not and will not consider any requests for said color brochure. I would have to get a copy from an art store. Since all my watercolors (and vast majority of art supplies) are purchased online, I guess I am SOL. Did you get your color brochure from an actual brick and mortar storefront?

Watching this video again...haven't watched it in years haha. I have fibro, cfs, chronic migraines, endometriosis, PCOS, scoliosis in my neck, bulging and slipped discs in my back, arthritis, the list goes on and on...I definitely understand the flare-ups and whatnot. Okay, back to the video haha Thank you for not lecturing us on the different colors, where they come from, how ethical/unethical they are, being responsible, etc... People who do that drive me nuts. I am an adult, I don't need a lecture on what paint I should and should not use. I do love the environment (went to school for biology/marine biology), but again...I will decide what I use 🤷‍♀️

According to the site "handprint" and their tests; Indanthrone blue also had that weird property of fading and then coming back as your Prussian blue did!

If there is a next time, just scan the dot cards and edit the paint out. Then you could either print them as labels or print onto a hotpressed paper.

Unfortunately, no, that's not really a rating that they use. In general, heavy earth colors, cobalt pigments, etc. will be less flowy, but not always. QoR has a ton of flow in general, as do other brands that use oxgall.

I had high hopes for Lapis Lazuli because wasn't it used for making ultramarine? I was like oooh pure ultramarine pigment and then it was like.. womp womp womp.. but I still would like to own it cause as someone who uses crystals in grids and practices witchcraft, the more stones I can get in paint i'm just all hell yes Also Malachite is pronounced mala-kite :)

For a really frustrating paper - lol, try Strathmore Vision. Dirt cheap, but yikes. Even wetting first and painting an area with dilute paint, I end up with an uneven streaky look, like I had scribbled the area in with markers or coloured pencils. :-)

They don’t grind up stones to make the primatek paints. They only use the particles they cannot use when they make jewelry from the stones. Daniel Smiths ceo John Cogley has live Facebook sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays. He explains a lot about these paints and paints them out for us. He explains the primateks. Another pigment bites the dust, RIP :) I have a tube of the original that I'd forgotten about, it's lovely but not an essential color. A lot of DS "convenience" colors are multi-pigment replacements of discontinued pigments.

I have been a subscriber for quite a while but just recently really started to consider watercolours... and ever since i have been binge watching your channel 😂🙈. Your videos are fantastic and so helpful! Im trying to decide on my first 'real ' watercolour set purchase and its been incredible to learn from you- thank you. Still not sure which set i would like (money plays a huge factor unfortunately PLUS im in Australia which limits things a LOT more ). Im interested in very transparent and non granulating watercolours i *think* but that doesn't exactly narrow it down too much more since brands have several of each😂 (hope that makes sense). Mission Gold Pure Pigment sounds nice? or maybe white nights!?! Would need to save up for quite a while though unfortunately. An even cheaper set im interested in is the Tube set of Sakura Koi watercolours (Ive seen in a few reviews that there is a difference between the tube and pans). Have you tried them? Also, i really hope this doesn't sound silly but ive come to really like you too... your morals, ethics and you are just such a lovely person (really wonderful getting to know a little more about you in your 25K video too... i also suffer from chronic illness and while art definitely helps my mental health, i sometimes just cant do it...). Thank you for your informative videos! After watching this I ordered the dot cards & am almost through the first page of swatching them out. It's therapeutic ;) Do you know of any other brands who offer dot cards? I'd love to be able to compare Winsor & Newton or M. Graham colors without buying tubes. It seems odd that they don't offer dot cards.

MGraham does not because their paints are too sticky. W&N doesn't either, but they also say not to use their tube paints from a dry state (which is another conversation lol). But Schmincke offers one, and Mission Gold JUST announced that they would have one soon.

That makes sense! I had no idea W&N were meant to be used wet. That seems like a lot of wasted paint. I would love to try Schmincke & Mission Gold. Thanks for the info, I learn SO much from your videos!

@@nitnat1984 W&N also has pans but they're really specific with their literature which is one of the reasons you won't hear me singing their praises. No other watercolor claims that rewetting their pains is detrimental to the quality of the paint so either W&N is doing something weird or they're lying, or everyone else is haha. Idk I use their tube paint from dry just fine, except phthalo green blue shade which grows a film.

That is odd. I have 2 of their colors that seem to rewet fine, but maybe get a littler dryer than DS. I was planning on trying more W&N since floral artists seem to be obsessed with them (I paint mostly florals, landscapes & animals), but I'm seeing a lot of beautiful colors by other brands after watching your videos and getting the DS dot card. Your color spotlight videos have helped me choose a few new tubes that I'm really loving.

Daniel smith has a page where they talk about the Cadmium hues being essentially single pigment, even when more than one pigment is listed. They call it 'co-precipitation'. Perhaps it is marketing (from DS ?!? - lol), or perhaps there is some meaning to it.

John Cogley talked about co-precipitation a bit during his lecture, and if I recall correctly about how making the particles similar makes the pigments act as one. And that the more opaque a color is the fewer layers and mixes you can use successfully. Chemistry and science seems to be as important at DS as art and artists, there was a lot of discussion of chemistry, wish I remembered more :) I tried mixing some samples I had of the Cad hues when I got home and I did have a hard time making mud, but I'm going to play with some triads to see how they work. I have good sized samples of cad yellow deep and cad scarlet hue so will experiment.

I’m pretty sure that when semi precious stones like amethyst are mined, trimmed and carved for the jewelry industry there are plenty of pieces which are not gem quality. Why shouldn’t artists be able to benefit from paints created with these pieces which would have otherwise been harvested for naught?

That's normal. Aside from color change due to camera and monitor settings, there's also the very small variation range of yellow, before it drifts into greens and oranges, or even ochre, sienna and lighter umber tones. The difference is mostly in the thin layers, not the mass tones, as well as results in mixing and glazing.

One thing that I think should be said is that the paper these paint dots come on is *TERRIBLE*! If I had to guess, it's a low gsm, cellulose/pulp paper, which did not do many of the colors and pigments justice at all. This is especially true of all of the granulating colors. Most all of the dots offer a healthy amount of paint (way more than Schminke and W&N), so I strongly recommend swatching these instead on one's regular watercolor paper or something higher quality than what Daniel Smith provides here.
