Hello! Firstly, this is a big one. I didn't mean for it to be over 50 minutes long, but there were a lot of supplies to swatch and I wanted to put them through their paces! That being said, I still had to cut quite a lot of footage while I was editing - it seems that I really, REALLY like to swatch and talk about art supplies. 😂 In this video, I'll be swatching everything featured in the recent Big Art Haul except the Schmincke Horadam special edition palette (that's going to have a video of its own!) and the fountain pen, dip pen, and inks (they will also have a video of their own). I decided to swatch slightly differently this time so that I could also layer the dry media on top of the watercolour; I had a lot of fun playing and experimenting with these materials! Get a drink and a snack before you sit back to watch this one, or just put this video on in the background while you're working on your own projects and I'll keep you company. I hope you enjoy it!

Thought I'd comment as maybe it'll make you feel better but I bought the ocean grey a couple of weeks ago and I too have been holding onto the box because it's too nice! :D I know it's strange but it made me feel nice when I saw I wasn't the only one. Also Sennelier are one of my favourite brands for watercolour, the quality is wonderful and you can buy half pans from Jackson's which can be an easier and cheaper way to try out colours if you don't want to commit to a larger tube. I wanted to say thank you for doing swatching differently, this was a lot of fun to watch. Hope anyone reading this has a lovely day!

Just loved the loose swatching! You appeared to really enjoy yourself! And quite honestly I prefer this style of swatching - you get a chance to see what the paint can do and is far less time consuming and if I like a colour you swatch I jot it down and on to the next! Now having said all that I swatch in the traditional way in my swatch book but I play swatch in my sketchbook. So no I don't see it as a "mess" at all! And yes - if you said this paint is "crap" I might fall off my chair in surprise. Your enthusiasm is contagious - you sound very happy right now - glad you are feeling better. And thanks for sharing - much appreciated.

@sailorfan863 жыл бұрын
@@NatashaNewtonArt Hello hello ^^ Basically, I actually did bother getting to know the color and really have a look at it. As you noticed, one has to dilute the paint to see it's beauty. And I also left it on the side for a whole year until I decided & felt the need to actually look at it, again. Because it can not be that I hate a paint I bought because I thought it looked great on good girlfriend Jean haines video. And praised by so many. I really loved it and couldn't wait to try it. But when I finally did try it I... I just did not understand the world. I'm supposed to love it but I'm not even liking it in person. It looked good from afar. I was expecting for the gates of heaven to open and not the pits of hell. I was devastated. My money -.- Also I had ordered it with the Amazonite Genuine which I hated too and now like/love. Funny I know. The way I use it is as a n accent color. As in eyes, backgrounds/menacing backgrounds, clothes, accessories, flours etc If I want something to POP then I use colors like this. I really feel this is the way to use them ( for me ). And also depends on the subject. Still trying to figure out how to use it effectively other then an accent color. Obviously it will require a different color palette for it to make sense, I guess. Or maybe not. Experimenting is key ^.^ Still think it could/can work with your palette. You're a fantastic artist with it's own flair so you'll figure it out when time ( calling ) comes. If there's one thing I realized is that all colors can work with a little adjustment in palette & subject. I'm a sketchbook artist my " work " is not meant to be sold. It's more sketching than anything else but who knows. HOPE THIS HELPS

The Lapis Lazuli is so different than I was expecting. I have several pieces of jewelry made with it. The stone is a mid tone blue with a slight hint of green and veins of “gold” running through it. I think the “gold” is pyrite (fool’s gold). You were saying that the Lapis reminds you of an overcast sky, where I live in Central Pennsylvania, that is the color of winter. Most days in winter we have overcast, yet bright days. It reminds me of snow in the evening.

I love how you’ve done your swatching, it looks like so much fun! I’m glad you liked the Mineral Violet and Shadow Violet. They really are beautiful colours. Based on what you were saying about the sky for the Lapis Lazuli, I would recommend maybe giving Misty Morning a go (also Roman Szmal). It’s a lovely blue/purple/grey and in a light wash would be perfect for a subtly moody sky. Another I think you might like from Roman Szmal is Przybysz’s Grey (I have no idea how it is pronounced). It’s a gorgeous grey with violet undertones. You might be able to tell that I have fallen in love with the Roman Szmal paints 😅 I love them so much that I bought a load of primaries to use alongside my usual Windsor and Newton palette. I really want that Schmincke Ocean Grey, it’s absolutely stunning. I also really liked all the greens. I have the Sennelier Greenish Umber myself. Kind of also want the Cascade Green, but as you said in the video, I would know what to use it for. That liquid charcoal is an interesting one! I look forward to seeing how you use it in you future work. You mentioned that you like ochre colours. I recently tried Windsor and Newton Gold Ochre and it’s a really lovely brownish gold colour. Sorry for this essay 😅 your videos really inspire me. I’m now planning to just have a play like you have with the various media that I have that (pencils, alcohol markers, gouache, etc), so thank you for the incentive to just let loose and play 😊💚💚💚 thanks again for the wonderful content you produce

Oh, it's so nice to see the swatches! I opted out of trying the Schminke Ocean Grey and the Sennelier Greenish Umber because they seemed like such simple mixes, but I might have to change my mind about the Sennelier one! 🙈 And I recommend trying Sennelier Light Grey!! (Yep, double exclamation marks.) I'd say the Anthraquinone Blue goes much deeper. Try mixing it with Neutral Tint! It makes lovely hues, including one very similar to DS Indigo, but more alive! Also try mixing it with Perylene Maroon (I have the White Nights Venice Purple, which has the same Hue as W&N and is gorgeous)! I find the Quinacridone pinks and purples from White Nights to be among the more disappointing colours in their range, from the ones I have tried. But there are many that are amazing! I have a whole list. ☺️ If I got to recommend a few for you to try it would be their Perylene Violet, Indigo and Payne's Grey, since they are all very textured! Also the Perylene Maroon I mentioned above. I So want to love Shadow Violet and DS Moon Glow, and when I see others use them and swatch them they look stunning, but as soon as I try them myself I just Do Not Like them. Have no idea why. 🤷 And the Cascade Green, I think it shines the brightest in very pale, very watery washes! ☺️ I have a favourite paint I would like to recommend, speaking of yellow ochre colours, it's the DS Monte Amiata Natural Sienna. It has such an amazing hue and depth, and is absolutely transparent, and mixes beautifully. I have yet to try another colour with a similar hue that can beat it! ☺️
@NatashaNewtonArt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the suggestions and recommendations, Hannah! It's always so interesting to hear from others about the paints they love. The Albrecht Durer markers are also water-soluble, so fun to use like watercolors. The Cascade Green is actually a perfect color for painting the mountains here in the southern Appalachian region of the US. The hazy greenish-bluish separation mimics the layers of the rolling hills so nicely.

I am fascinated with the dried texture of the liquid charcoal! I wonder if there was a way to 'fix' it without ruining the quality of it as a base? I also love all the greens & blues, that ocean grey is gorgeous. Off to add more items to my Jackson's fav list :) Thanks for sharing your explorations!

Thanks Jannah! I'm not sure - I need to experiment with fixative. I have a can of fixative but haven't used it yet. I hope I can fix the charcoal if needed without issues!

Oh how I want that SCHMINCKE Ocean Grey but the price. For now I just make my own version of a dupe. 😄 In a slightly diluted version, Ocean Grey reminds me of the color the sky becomes before a tornado.

It's a very special colour, but I agree, it's quite expensive! I'm lucky to have Jackson's affiliate credit to help cover the cost of some of my materials. It's a great thing for this channel, ha ha!

We need super comfortable chairs for when we work as Ihate being distracted by the pain in my back when painting! I like to be able to sit all the way back for support and not have to reach too far forward to work, it’s been a real struggle for me! As far as paint explosions go I have now learned that when I pop open a new tube of anything I always have a little palette well or dish underneath so when it comes squishing out it has somewhere to go😘

I really love your long chatty videos. Not only are they really informative and open up a world of ideas to us all, but I find it incredibly calming listening to you! I have started listening to you whilst I'm at work and at bed time. I think I've worked back through your whole back catalogue of videos and I'm having to watch them again now as I've run out of options 😂🥰 The one thing I didnt enjoy so much was the jazz type music on some of them, which really stressed me out 😂 But that's just me and I'm sure many enjoyed it! Really looking forward to your next one and personally would love to see more reviews on the hand made paints which I would like to start buying but really don't know where to start as their are so many options out there! I also checked out the Ko-Fee art club but was a little confused.....maybe coz I watched an old video. Would love an update on how to support you so that you can keep supporting me and my mental health 🥰

How funny! Thank you again.

Thank you for your lovely videos only just found your channel in the last week and obsessed. :) loving the swatching and haul videos . Do mind a couple fo observations? If you hold your hand or something behind the pencils behindwe you hold them close to camera it makes them in focus also could you hold them still for a few seconds and its interesting to see them up close. You have inspired me to take up a brush again (not your standard) and try some night landscapes. Going to swatch everything I have now :). Thank you

Hello Natasha! I am really late with my comment but nontheless: I gathered a lot of watercolors from various different brands over the last few years and the ones from Roman Szmal are amongst my favourites. They are my main pallet at the moment. From what I know about your color preferences, I think you will enjoy Prezybysz's Grey (the unpronouncable grey, als Dr. Oto Kano says ;)) Misty Morning - a beautyful light bluish grey with light pink tones, Shadow Grey - similar to but Prezybysz's Grey but not that much granulating and Aquarius Grey - which is kind of a darker, warmgreyish Buff Titanium. - (Me: realizing how hard it is to describe colors, when it is not my native language ...) - Their Paynes Grey and the Indigo (Hue) is really beautiful too and for a good autumnal orange I love Quinacridone Burnt Sienna. - I also began to make my own watercolors a few months ago and I really enjoy it. I made my own binder with honey and did a lot of experiments. It is definitely a learning curve, but I love to be able to come up with new ideas and my own "convenience colors". Maybe you should try that too. It is time consuming and a bit messy but a lot of fun! - If you want me to send you some swatches of the colors I mentioned, please let me know. - Greetings from Germany! - Andrea

You were just what I needed on a dreary, sunless day. I enjoyed every delicious second of watching you swatching. Mystery: Did you swatch the 2 bottled inks ? I'm a pen + ink person and have been dying to try these new Rohrer+Klingner drawing inks and was very keen to get your opinion and see the actual dried colors. In another long swatching session I again didn't see the acrylic paint being swatched. I'm guessing they're in a follow-up video - if so would you kindly direct me to the appropriate one and solve the mystery? Your calm dedication and the serene results - stunning art I love -brightened my day and inspired me to paint again. Admiring your superb art with its perfection of line and mouth-watering colors, it's unbelievable that you've sufferred from anxiety. Especially when you and your art radiate tranquility. Thank you for so generously sharing so much - by teaching, calming walks in the countryside and funny comments. Nina, waving from Toronto.

I also have been saving things because I have been crafting TTRPG Terrain and am a DM/GM (and have been reusing packaging to craft tabletop terrain pieces.) Also I save a few of the prettiest just to keep. I also have a long spanning collection of one of every MTG booster cover I've ever gotten!
