For those sentenced to jail time, doxxing is usually part of a larger scheme involving multiple criminal offenses. There have been no precedents over this case or underlying issues which are similar in nature. As a result, doxxing is not officially illegal. I had something similar happen to me in person. Instead of a SWAT team, it was a police ride home, and I almost ended up in a mental hospital because of some bogus nonsense from a jealous family member. Months later, as I was returning home, I got pulled over by the police. Apparently, someone who matched my description was involved in stabbing incidents, painting the victims' blood all over the walls of a flat. The officer looked at me skeptically as I explained, "I'm just now returning home..." and then, feeling embarrassed, the officer drove away. It's become a wild trend lately in the UK; if you don't like someone, just call the police and make up bogus reports in the hope that they are taken seriously enough to get that individual into some serious trouble.

The biggest thing about this is: the people who still do swatting are doing it because they are trying to get people hurt. They realize exactly what they are doing, and the potential result of it. And they are the kind of people who actively are trying to get that negative result because of some issue or another. Until they make it a serious crime, like Muta said equal to attempt on someone's life that carries a LONG long time in prison... They're gonna keep trying at it as they are the kind of people who value nothing and no one but themselves. Another danger of swatting, that not enough people are talking about, is that when law enforcement is aware of the possibility of swatting at a certain location, it could lead to them being underprepared for real emergencies at that location. Telling your local law enforcement of the possibility of swatting during your livestream can be a double-edged sword.
@gairisiuil Жыл бұрын
I'd imagine you need extensive proof of the fact that you are, in fact, a streamer, and are popular enough to make it worth your while to tell them. If you're saying that if you're a real streamer and law enforcement is calling ahead of time to let you know they're rapidly approaching, they'd most likely still go through your house and investigate a bit for risks just like this one. Oh, and also, if you mean that they won't come if there's a real hostage situation there i.e. the streamer themself is being held hostage, the streamer is 1) already in great danger and 2) can't just tell them to not come to his house, that's not how it works. If you mean he can't call the police normally, that's a different force.

Honestly, those calls should be mega tracked and super pinpointed and everything else because the idiot that thinks that's funny should just rot in jail forever. How is it hard to ask the caller to identify themselves and locate his information while the swat team is getting ready and heading over to the location. Anyone can call from an anonymous number that has no contact information and cannot be verified? It screams of a hoax. Ask the caller for their name and number, address and keep them on the line while you do a simple background check. If they are using a legitimate phone number with an address and real name then you can follow up after the event. A random person calls in a swatting call and no one does anything? Ned is one of the most cool persons to come out the GTA franchise, he is such a good guy, couldn't deserve this on his entire life
@HunterTN Жыл бұрын
There was a local story a couple years back where a guy's ex-MIL called 911 in the middle of the night and said he was holding someone hostage at gunpoint. Cops rolled up ready for action and pound on the door, the guy is woken up by the noise and grabs his pistol to see what's going on. They see him armed in the kitchen and shoot him dead. There of course was no hostage, the ex wife had told some batshit story to her mother and instead of using critical thinking she just called 911 and got a guy killed. Neither of them were ever charged with anything.

You forgot to have them pay the salary of those involved, pay for damages caused during the time resources were tied up on a false call and should not be allowed to use a phone unsupervised.
@PinkAgaricus Жыл бұрын
Actually make them pay even the taxpayers whose money pays these officers (state and city/county money comes out of our pockets, we aren't paying taxes to the state or city/county to pay for these kinds of rude pranks that waste time) that are wasting their time on what they think is not a waste of time. We all deserve to sue these scumbags that pull off this garbage.

4:52 Not trying to disprove your very valid point, but SWAT did not 'break into' the victim's (Andrew Finch) house and shoot him, nor was it SWAT. Wichita Police (that had no SWAT training) surrounded his house. His mother, who was also in the house, alerted Andrew to the police lights. Andrew stepped outside on the front porch, and was raising his hands (as instructed) when Wichita PD shot him.

Couple of thoughts/notes: 1. Really sad to think people go above and beyond stalking you and playing the system for something life-threatening like this. The moron behind this believes for sure has done something heroic by seeing all the talk in the GTA community. 2. Really worrying that law enforcement can't easily track this back and have this people accountable. It should not continue to happen. 3. Really saddened to think Ned Luke will never feel the same level of safety up to yesterday. This situations when you go through life, make you feel vulnerable and teaches you that regardless who you are, there are people who for no reason will attack you. This survival reaction makes for a permanent PTSD in the persons involved. Ned Luke will always, for the rest of his life, be annoyed that his family, his safe place, can be endangered beyond his capacity to protect them. 4. Very disappointed that it will be up to Ned's own efforts and resources to push an investigation. 5. Faith in humanity slightly affected negatively by this.

There's no work around for law enforcement when it comes to number spoofing. You'd have to completely redesign and change how phone calls work from the ground up to fix it, and that definitely isn't happening.

I'm don't believe that the punishment based justice system is at all functional, recidivism rates generally point to that. However, as long as that's the system we have, and given that we already have minimum sentences for other crimes, I'm on board for that kind of sentencing for swatting.
@scottthewaterwarrior Жыл бұрын
Same, though in the case of swatting I feel the problem is less how severe/lenient the punishment is and more just how difficult it is to catch the people to begin with.
@davidlazerz8564 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. What we need is a VASTLY demilitarized and deescalation based police force in the US with much greater federal oversight and licensing requirements. Police should not be breaking into citizens homes as if they are raiding the Abbottabad Compound like some kind of seal team 6 larpers.

@Plaprad Жыл бұрын
Lawmakers, of course not. They're usually idiots and have no clue what they're even looking at. Cops, and SWAT in particular is very aware. I've got friends from the military who are LE now and several in SWAT. They are terrified of this. One mentioned if they're playing a shooter and it gets crazy while SWAT is stacking by the door, things will go ugly fast. Now you're busting into a house with gunfire and a dude sitting there with a black object in their hands. I agree it should always be charged as "Attempted Murder".
@zenoblues7787 Жыл бұрын
SWAT can't take things lightly. They are not regular police officers. They are sent for extreme situations. The police departments are the only way to handle this. They're the ones who send SWAT in the first place.

I guess the solution would be in legislation, I’m assuming the groups are connected bc one orders the other. That stream may not go up
@CryinOverSpilledTea Жыл бұрын
Not that this would ever be implemented, but a potential solution is to register streamers addresses' with the police. When someone calls in about an address on the list, they can check the link to their stream to confirm whether they are live-streaming. This way, even though they still need to respond, they can go in with the awareness that this may be a false alarm.

Man, the fact that some random people are able to do this crap without any consequences is just stupid. And I think that there should be a punishment for stuff like swatting. So instead of breaking in to the house of the false victim, swat actually finds the person who called to them and give him a lesson of his lifetime by arresting that person and putting him through trial in a court, or even putting that person in to a prison for a week. Showing that person that this is not a joke. So when the next time that person decide to do crap like this, they think twice.

In my opinion, swatting is: 1. False reporting (law enforcement received an intentionally fabricated claim) 2. False accusation (victim did not commit the crime) 3. Harassment (premeditated hostile interference with victim's life) 4. Abuse of power (SWAT team mobilization for personal reasons) 5. Act of terror (abuse to intimidate victim, their family, and live broadcast audience)
