Story of .40S&W in short is: It's a medium that no one cares for, it's considered a middle-ground between 9mm and 45acp but it barely outperforms 9mm. The FBI wanted a more powerful round than 9x19mm for the handguns their agents use (this after they switched to semi-autos and dropped revolvers as sidearms) but wouldn't go up to 45acp due to low magazine capacity. Their solution was the 10mm Auto, but their desired load was a little on the low end for the cartridge and so they wanted the same thing but shorter (to improve the cartridge and put it in a smaller gun than a large framed 1911). And so then Smith and Wesson made the 10mm auto shorter (about the same length as 9mm where as 10mm is as long as or is slightly longer than 45acp) and created .40S&W. While the .40S&W had more power than the 9mm with a minimal increase in recoil the gain was little. With the wider round came somewhat decreased magazine capacity and the power over the 9mm wasn't a whole lot. In the end the FBI circled back to 9mm because by then the 9mm could be loaded close to .40S&W power levels and nowadays hot .40S&W loads aren't much better than hot 9mm loads so it gets crapped on *A LOT*.

Fun Fact: 40S&W only exists because the feds wanted 10mm auto but pistol friendly. They just dropped revolvers as the standard and wanted a semiauto that packed more than 9mm (back then 9mm was lethargic compared to nowadays. One of few things NATO has actually benefitted). They were happy with 40SW for not even 3 years then the new beefier 9mm cartridge and firearms started coming out, rendering the few pros of 40SW to nothing more than being a 1mm wider hollowpoint and that that was it.
