I remember when i live in S.E., Washington,D.C. he used to walk down the street come to the festival on M.L.K Ave. He shook people hands & always payed his respected to the poor / low class community. I remember hearing about him as a kid. Living on the west side of Chicago the only thing I knew of him was what I heard on the news; portrayed as a crack smoking mayor that the black people of D.C kept putting back in office. It wasn't until I became an adult and met someone who grew up in DC during his administration that I learned of ALL the beautiful things he did for black people and the community. How he created hundreds of jobs for young, black men and women keeping them off the streets and giving them a sense of purpose.

I met Marion Barry and Mayor Bowser in DC City Hall meetings. He was a beautiful brother you know and me and him used to talk and we really had a common ground cuz we both were from Mississippi and we talked about that and leadership he was a beautiful brother you know and then he passed away. He never sold out he never became all the time I respected him

After the drug bust and prison people still voted him back he is for the people of this town.

I don't hold what he did in that hotel room against him -but what I do take offense to (as a DC native) is how throughout his tenure as Mayor he drove the city into the ground, to the point that it took Congress to rescue it with an unelected Control Board. Thankfully he had the good sense to pick then-Chief Financial Officer Anthony Williams as his anointed successor. And I haven't even mentioned his race-baiting yet....
