Naa it's the temperature differentials that do like going from sub 0 to 25°c when you enter the buildings.😂 Heck last time i went to my local council offices i came out with heatstroke, no windows open heaters on and it was 24°c out but there was a beautiful breeze outside, but must have been 30 plus inside that building.

​@paulammon2281nope. Germs get you sick. Not temperature. Some people are prone to sinus issues, asthma, allergies that can be aggravated by certain seasons, but those are not "germ" type sickness. One reason people do get sick more in the cold weather is because they are crammed indoors with no fresh air and germs just brew in that environment. But no, the temperature in and of itself does not even come close to getting you sick!

This is definitely a more southern issue. My county was so rural and poor that this actual did happen a few times where we got some obscurely low temps with nasty wind chills (for SW TN standards) and the issue was too many kids that couldn't afford heavy enough coats to wait for the bus

Minnesota native here, we had school even when it was colder than the surface of Mars. It was -30 with wind chill and the schools still said "ah yall better get in here" I rode my bike in this type of shit it won't kill you if your smart but it will make you stupidly confident when the cold times hit. If you live in a cold area take the time to teach your kid how layers work and how to use them effectively.

My school tried to have classes on the day after the Halloween blizzard in 1991. First, it was 2 hours late start. Then, no AM kindergarten. Then, 3 hours late with no after-school activities. It was after 10 AM when they finally called off for the day. We'd gotten more than 2 feet of snow. One of the doors to the school was below street level and almost completely buried. I remember sledding down the middle of a hilly street. (Because they hadn't been plowed yet and you wouldn't hit any trees.)

It depends on where you live. I'm in TN and sometimes it drops to be very cold. But they cancel school because kids have to wait for the bus, wait outside for school to open. Then if it rains and there's too much ice the buses can get messed up. It's rare, but we close for cold. Closing for snow is more frequent. But I'd imagine in areas where they aren't prepared for sudden cold and freezes they'd close.

Thank you for saying this! The only reason we think the cold makes you sick is because it makes your nose run. Then people wipe their noses on their sleeves and hands then don’t wash them. Just need to practice better handwashing while you are in runny nose season.

​@charityrocks Colder temperatures lower the immune system a bit, and a lot of viruses can survive at lower temperatures (that's why there's a flu season for example). So it has something to do with it.. that being said, children who go to school is like getting them back home with a lot of new germs. They get a little sick, I got sick way more in the beginning😅. But it's expected eventually, and how else should their immune system develop? After age 8 it definitely had a lower impact on me, but when they were little I was🤧 after they had an event or something. Also at higher temperatures. Staying home because it's cold, I don't now where she pulled that one out 🐰🎩

Depends on where you live. In my part of NC they close schools when it gets too cold because they insist on turning the heaters off over night. And won't turn them on again in time to heat the buildings before students arrive. And yes, the pipes have burst, and they still don't change things.

I'm from Wisconsin. I remember one winter, school was first delayed, then canceled for a day because a bunch of our busses wouldn't start because it was too cold. One that did start broke down at like its first stop or something. Another time, snow caved in the roof over one room. Another winter, there was something wrong with the furnace by the time we got to the school and the busses had to take us home. I remember busses getting stuck in the snow until a plow could get there. I don't miss winters in Wisconsin. Terrible for my arthritis.

Michigan here, and yeah, I think the last time they canceled school for cold was in 2013/2014 when it was -25 for like a week straight (not even counting the wind chill). They definitely got soft these days with snow days though. Back in he 90's I was lucky to get one per year even if it snowed 12"+ overnight. These days they cancel it with 4".

Schools have gone soft man.. I remember the first time I heard of school being cancelled due to "the cold" and I was so confused. I live in northern New England, when I was growing up we never had school cancelled for the temperature, hot or cold, and we get temperatures ranging anywhere from -35° (plus wind chill) up to 109° with 98% humidity and poor air quality due to the mountains of pollen that get dumped on us. We were lucky if we got 2 snow days out of the whole school year. Everything changed though around 10 years ago and now kids get so many days off for the most ridiculous reasons. They'll call school the night before for a rumor of snow showers and the next day comes, it's nothing but sunshine all day or it switched to just rain. And this cancelling for "cold" madness started maybe 6-7 years ago, where they'll call off school for anything under 0° or a wind chill under 0. But 13°... That's WILD! We basically wouldn't have school all winter if that was the standard, especially since the older kids go to school before the sun comes up when it's still pitch black out.

So when I was a kid I remember getting on the bus in the middle of blizzards. You could barely see the bus from the front door. My dad would just put us in bed and keep an eye on us when we got sick. Never once had to run to the doctor, now everyone runs to the doctor for a sniffle. Our society gets softer and softer with every generation.

I lived in the south for a while doing service projects. One winter it routinely got down to -10 degrees Fahrenheit with max humidity, and we were still out doing our thing from 9-7. All it took was a couple extra layers under my coat, my shemagh, under armor, some wool socks, and a lot of hot hand packs. Sure, my shemagh was frozen solid when we got home, and it wasn’t exactly what I’d call “pleasant”, but we never got to the point where we thought it was a hindrance to our work. In fact, when we were shoveling snow, I’d routinely shed a layer or two so I wouldn’t overheat and start sweating. As long as you stay dry, it’s incredibly easy to stay warm in even the harshest cold. You don’t even need fancy clothes, I did that in a hoody, a wool coat I got from goodwill, a long sleeve shirt, some Walmart brand under armor, and a pair of pajama pants under my jeans.

Unless it was colder than that, and the pipes and heaters froze overnight, we still went to school and work. Buy your kids a damn winter coat, and get educated kiddos.

Only time it closes is when it snows, then rains, then snows again, all of it during the same night. Or, you’re looking at flooding that is tall enough to make driving a whole new thing with actually flooded engines. The second one happened to me as a kid. The buses could not pick up kids since the routes were flooded over. The first one happened to my kids when it snowed, then rained, and then snowed again all in same night. Big branches were breaking everywhere.

I remember one time it was -40 below and they cancelled because the diesel buses wouldn't start. So, Dad took us out ice fishing. Didn't catch anything, had 2-3 wind tilts the whole time and had to keep breaking the holes open every 30 minutes. We picked a sheltered cove and built a bonfire on the ice. Ice was 30 inches thick and we only had a hand auger. I think we put up only 5 or 6 tilts of the allowed dozen. Early 2000s. New England.

Grew up in Minnesota. I think we had one, just ONE actual snow day when I was growing up, and that was the Halloween snow storm. Shortest trick-or-treating ever. Parent insisted I stay home on a couple other occasions due to the weather, largely how cold it was and the fact that buses and black ice don’t mix. The only other “snow day” we got was when the governor shit down the state because the wind chill hit 70 below and other close, yet ridiculous numbers in the state. Moved to New Mexico as an adult and they shut down for most any snow where we were. I was flabbergasted. I currently live in North Carolina and they shut down for even the slightest thought that anything would land on the ground. In all fairness, we have a lot of high schoolers who drive a long way on country roads to get to school, many bringing their siblings to school first. And since we really don’t get snow, those students really wouldn’t have any experience driving in it otherwise. Pair that with no real snow removal equipment…yep…I get it. Still am flabbergasted.

I think it really only matters where that is. In TX the power grid would throw a fit and break down. We don't have the infrastructure to deal with it getting that cold. However anywhere that it gets that cold regularly it wouldn't make sense to close, it would be like closing school here because it's 100° outside.

At -15f (-26c) school was closed for us a couple times growing up. But it actually wasn’t the temperature itself that closed the school, it was pipes bursting overnight or the diesel engines not being warm enough to start the busses. All in all I would say it happened like 4 times over 10 years I can remember. Otherwise I definitely remember having frozen hair waiting for the bus.

Locally they had an imminent snow and ice storm heading our way. We live in Georgia. My wife and son had to drive 2 hours to go 20 miles because they waited too long to release them. Some kids had to stay the night at the school. Parents where riding atvs to pick up their kids that lived close. My wife is a teacher. I agree cold is no reason though. I grew up in northern michigan. I remember waiting for the bus with six feet of snow on each side of the road. We just aren't prepared for a large snow storm here.

The only reason we didn’t get snow all the time is because it’s a desert. lol The ONLY time schools were closed is the one year we got like 18 inches of snow overnight! Believe it or not, in South Carolina they do delay/cancel school for bitterly cold days. The reason is due to the enormous amount of rural kids who have 45-120 minute bus rides. Southern kids aren’t used to that kind of bitter cold. It really only happens once or twice over a 4 or 5 year span.

That's cold but definitely manageable. In CO the only time my school closed was when the pipes froze then burst and took out a floor.

The only time my school ever closed vecause it was cold, the boiler that fed the forced air heating system blew a regulator over the weekend, and half the water lines in the building froze. We were back in classes by Wednesday, and the classrooms without working heat were moved to the gym and segregated by subject. The building was back to normal in 2 weeks.

I lived in PA in the late 70's (yes, i'm that old) and I distinctly remember one morning waiting for the bus and thinking "oh, it's a lot warmer today". When I got home I found out it was 0 outside that morning and with the windchill it was -10 on that hill. 13 degrees? get warmer clothes, looser.

They do this here in VA. Bus passes, hear the chains rattling hanging under the bus. Never been on the tires. Because mums like her have a fit if their baby gets cold hot or uncomfortable..

I live on the Ohio, Michigan border. 13 degrees is warm in the winter and they've NEVER closed due to temperatures. I will say though our last few winters here has not been that cold at all.

13° is warm in many places. Snowy icy road is another story, late start though is becoming more popular than snow days even then. When it's -13° they might do indoor recess.

I a female really did walk almost a mile to the bus stop in the 80’s and stood in the cold while it was snowing to go to school. I never got sick from that. What got me sick was my home environment. Smoke, dust and other things.🤦🏼‍♀️

I remember as a kid waiting for the bus bundled up wearing face masks because it was -40 without windchill. Fun fact, at those temps, those old yellow school buses don't get warm enough to not see your breath.

Because 13 degrees is not a cause to stop learning. Dress him warm, make sure he gets into the building fast, and come get him. Kids in Alaska, Russia, and other freezing regions are going to school. Kids in Germany are walking through snow to train stations by themselves. He will be fine if you dress him properly.

I live in Minnesota, and school does get canceled from cold, but only if you could suffer frostbite in the 5 minutes you’re required to stand at the bus stop.

As a Canadian schools don't stop running ever. They are open even in -50 wind chill. The buses may not be running due to the cold. But even then the kids still play outside for anything warmer then -25. Or as my grade 3 teacher put it - you know it's too cold to play outside when your nose sticks together when you breathe in - 😅

I remember going to school when they said we'd have a blizzard that day. All they did was let us out early when the snow started blanketing the windows, and that was about 20 mins before school actually ended. My cousins and i chain linked ourselves and walked home like shin deep snow and 4 elementary aged kids trying not to get blown away. Boy, I miss them snow days.

I live in the UP of Michigan and if we canceled school when it got below 20 F, kids wouldn't go to school all winter. We set a record a couple years ago for over 60 days in a row with below zero weather...

My school was closed one single time in my entire time there, and that was because there was so much snow that it was difficult for anyone to leave their house. We had to jump out of a window to go outside at my place, lol.

When i was in school, the weather was only an issue If it was so windy, that stuff could fly at you and cause injury. So parents would be advised to walk with their children to school. That is what it was like in Iceland

Ours did but it's because the bus couldn't run bc diesel becomes gel at a certain temp. Some had working heaters but it's an all or nothing situation. That's what we were told because I wondered too.

Here in the uk, it has to either be -10°c and the roads covered in black ice and knee high with of snows. Especially in my town. Many schools are in rural areas, so it's impossible to get to safely when it snows. Had school get cancelled mid day because the snowstorm got worse. 😂
