Sweden's backlash: Why the tide is turning for refugees? | Talk to Al Jazeera

Sweden has received more refugees per capita than any other country last year, but many Swedes have started to question the country's immigration policies as crime rates and extremism are on the rise.
Traditionally, Sweden has been viewed as welcoming to refugees.
In 1970, most immigrants came from other European nations like Finland, Yugoslavia, Denmark and Greece. The 1980s saw people come from Iran, Chile, Lebanon and Turkey.
In the last 10 years, the numbers have taken off and in 2015, nearly 163,000 individuals applied for asylum in Sweden, a nation of 9.8 million people.
Syrians accounted for 51,000 of these asylum seekers, 41,000 came from Afghanistan, 20,000 from Iraq, along with thousands from Eritrea, Somalia and Iran. A combined 4,000 came from Albania and Kosovo.
Today, around 1.6 million people living in Sweden were born in another country - that is 16 percent of the population.
Many new arrivals are languishing in temporary housing, beggars and homeless live in the streets, and some neighbourhoods have seen an uptick in violence and extremism.
Concerns over security are growing and recent information about members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) living in Sweden and going to fight in Syria has received lots of media attention. According to Swedish police, around 300 people, many of them from the city of Gothenburg, are believed to have gone to Syria.
Then there's violent crime - in the past several months murders and assaults have taken place in asylum centres and in neighbourhoods with large numbers of immigrants.
The Sweden Democrats, the only party that has been advocating a more restrictive immigration policy, is now the third largest party in opinion polls, despite efforts by established political parties to isolate it.
So, what is behind the recent backlash against immigration in Sweden? Why is the tide turning for refugees in Sweden?
Al Jazeera went to the Swedish community of Ostra Goinge, an area that has received a number of new immigrants, to speak to citizens and politicians about the country's immigration policies.
Mayor Patric Aberg is a member of the Moderate Party, traditionally seen as a business-friendly party opposed to the ruling Social Democrats. He is calling for a "pause" to accepting applications for asylum. While he speaks of economic benefits he says there's a need to foster better "social integration".
"In Sweden right now I think we need a pause. In a very short period of time, since June last year, we have received more than 100,000 refugees. As you may have seen here in our community, we have very few apartments, we don't see a growth of jobs enough to employ all those coming.... We cannot in such a short period of time take care of so many people, our system cannot handle this," Aberg says.
"You look around the world and you hear reports about whats going on in Stockholm, Sweden, Europe and ask: will the people arriving here bring these problems with them? And I think this spread of fear is growing and we really need to work hard to ease their fear. It's not as unsafe as people think. But it's a feeling people have and we should take it seriously," he says.
Locals in Ostra Goinge have mixed feelings about refugees and migrants settling in Sweden.
"I guess they are doing what they can, but I think perhaps there are too many immigrants. It's been hard on the schools and our welfare system... We have received so many, and it takes time for them to integrate.... We have had problems with break-ins, we are not used to that... it happened to me, but they say it's being investigated," says citizen Maria Alm.
We also speak to the Swedish Interior Minister, Anders Ygeman, who is responsible for police and border controls; Marja Lemme, a political scientist at Stockholm University; and Ivar Arpi, a columnist for the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

I have worked in Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Northern Nigeria which is 95% muslim. I can assure readers here that sharia law is practiced 100% in Saudi Arabia and slightly less in the other three countries. You can have a beer in Egypt and Nigeria but not too openly. I was chased by religious police in Saudi for wearing shorts when out running at 5:00 in 30c heat ! These police carry long batons , specifically for beating up anyone who breaks Sharia law if they dont decide to jail you. If you are a Westerner in any of these countries you must respect and follow their rules, very carefully. Do we live in a fair and just world? NO!

I moved to Sweden from the UK in1992. Then, as now, I noticed just how hard it was to penetrate Swedish society. Swedes are quite guarded people. Even for me as a white middle class Englishman, it was very difficult to make Swedish friends or find a way to contribute to society. Swedes just don't want to let you in, and they are aware of this. Most Swedes make their friends in the very early years of life. They will tell you "Every friend I have, I met before I was fifteen years old. Everyone I met after turning fifteen is just an acquaintance." Such is Swedish culture. Swedish employers are also very unlikely to let you in. They don't employ foreigners. You can go to Sweden with professional degrees and a shed load of experience, but you'll never get a job there that actually lets you use your skills or education unless you happen to be called Svenson or Gustavsson. Swedes see anyone with a slightly darker complexion as a cleaner, a taxi driver or maybe someone to work in a Pizzeria. But you'll nearly never see those people get hired to work in an office or actually get a job with responsibility or prospects. Shortly before I decided to leave Sweden for good in 2015, I went to live in California for a couple of years. I'm ashamed to admit just how surprising it was for me to see people of colour present themselves as confident successful citizens. It shocked me to see busyness managers and executives that were of Asian decent, or to witness black Police officers or Hispanic doctors and nurses. I had become so used to only meeting white Swedes in those positions. Already after two years in the US I had made more friends and become more integrated into a community than I had in Sweden in almost 20 years. I don't mis Sweden at all, and watching this report brings back all those frustrating feeling of how it was to be a 'foreigner' there. With the new influx of people arriving in Sweden as refugees, it would be nice to think that many of them could create a reasonable quality of life for themselves. But instead, unless they aspire to drive a taxi or clean office buildings Sweden will have a few extra Pizza restaurants in every town.

Immigrant and refugee is not the same. If you were forced to live in a weird alien country for a period of your life, while you waited for your own country to sort itself out, you probably wouldn't adopt your temporary home's customs.

We did that. When we immigrated to the United States, my father served in the United States Air Force. When we grew up, my brother and I also served in the United States Air Force. We worked hard to make ourselves useful to our new country.

They've got to integrate immediately, and learn the language, if they're to live a full life and contribute to society. Otherwise, they're "scroungers" and the locals will eventually hate them.

Now the news is in February 2021 and the demonstrations in front of the Swedish Parliament building and on February 13, 2021 in the square Gothenburg . A question arises: Who bears the consequences of the children's exit from the social services when they reach 18-year-old because they become criminals addicted to drugs? Is this the education and ethics that the Sweden government wants? Why does Sweden not bear responsibility for the loss of children after their abduction? What is the benefit after the return of the children finished everything? Where are the rights of the child who claim?

I'm an immigrant myself. What I have learned is this. We immigrants are moving to a new country. We are NOT meant to import everything about our country into the new country. There is a reason we all left our country. And if we bring those problems and toxic traditions in the new country, you are just tainting your new home. We are proud of our cultures, but we have to admit there is something in our culture back in the original country that made that country a failure. Do not bring the bad things and terrible practices into the new country. A lot of immigrants think they can just transplant their entire lives into the new country without having to change. This is wrong. There are things you need to leave behind. Those are the things that made your country fail. Leave them behind. Whether it's maltreating women, child marriage, old religious rules that make no sense... All of that needs to be left behind. There is no place in the new country for old, damaging ways of thinking.
