Just a tiny correction. SAAB wasn't a car manufacturer first. The clue is in the name. "Svenska AEROPLAN AB". That's "aeroplane" in english. Edit: The full name of the company in english is "Swedish Aeroplane stock company (AktieBolag - directly translated to english is stock company - the Swedish term for "limited company" or "corporation")

And even then it was funded by Bofors and split off. And Bofors have been in the weapon manufacturing business (gunpowder, explosives, cannons) since the 1880s and even had a guy named Alfred Nobel as its owner for a while. True, they only switched to making cars because after WW2 ended they had a large factory with tools and employees they wanted to keep busy so they designed one of the first popular front engine, front wheel drive automobiles. I have owned 3 Saabs and they were well designed cars that in many ways were ahead of competition. My 1972 Saab 99 had heated seats with adjustable height/angle/lumbar support. Roll bar and side crash bar protection for passenger safety, 5 mph bumpers protection, carried 5 passengers comfortably and the 1.8 L engine accelerated the light weight car easily and got 27 mpg.

I think this is great but its kinda weird when you make it sound like the airplane already exist. They haven't even made the digital prototype yet. So even tho comparing all these features to current planes are interesting, it's doesn't mean this plane will be the most advanced an best one out there when it's actually ready. America have so many black projects they surely already have a lot of advanced technologies no one knows about yet. But I really like this i hope Sweden continue the tradition to develop it's own wepons and not becom reliant on American built wepons. That is one thing I'm worried about after we joined NATO. Being able to develop and build your own military equipment is something very powerful and something I'm really proud of that Sweden managed to do.

sweden has done quite well so far when it comes to developing combat aircraft already now Gripen's EW capability is far better than most F16, F18 and F15 they need long runways and landing strips and that these are clean otherwise these planes suck FOD into the engines The only western fighter aircraft that is manufactured from the drawing board to be able to operate from bases in the forest is the Swedish Gripen in wartime, Sweden must operate from bases in the forest to have any chance of operating our warplanes for any length of time The Gripen is made to take off and land from normal car roads Gripen can be refueling and rearming, including reloading the gun and attaching air-to-air missiles, can be completed in less than 10 minutes with only one technician officer and five conscript mechanics and costs much less in maintenance and in flight compared to the F16 The Gripen can handle both American and European weapons such as the IRIS-T, Meteor and the RBS15 anti-ship missile, Taurus cruise missile, etc. Gipen's RCS is of 0.5 to 0.1 sq.m depending on the model F15 of 25 sq.m F16 5 sq.m F18 0.5-2 sq.m depending on the model F35 0.05 sq.m F22 0.001 sq.m china's J-20 0.1-5 sq.m probably something in between Russia's SU57 0.1-1sq.m according to Suchoj, probably higher The F 22 Raptor RCS shows how far ahead the US is source Sandboxx thedtechind.wordpress.com/2020/06/10/rcs-of-4th-generation-fighter-jets/ The Gripen A and C have performed well when participating in the Read Flag exercise, better than the F16, F18 and F15 A Swedish Air Force pilot flying Gripen C at Red Flag in the US has never lost an engagement ever against a US designed fighter He has not flown against F-22 and F-35, but F-15, F-16 and F/A-18s have only been his prey, not his nemesis. the F-22 and F35 are the only operational American fighter that can give Gripen any substantial trouble in Red Flag exercise but Gripen C can also be dangerous for F22 In America Gripen C in an exercise against the F-22 Raptor the F-22 did not detect the Gripen until it was in a position to kill the F22 Raptor source of the above see links below www.quora.com/How-does-the-Saab-JAS-39-Gripen-compare-to-the-F-16-Fighting-Falcon www.f-16.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=11311&start=2880 www.globaldefensecorp.com/2021/01/07/gripen/ the new SAAB 39 Gripen E model performs in a completely different class it is not fair to compare the SAAB 39 gripen E model with the F16 F15, F16, F18 F already have big problems with gripen A and C model The SAAB 39 Gripen E is more on par with the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II in terms of sensors, radar, Supercruise, etc. now the F35 does not have Supercruise Gripen first participated in Red Flag 2006 with the Gripen A It was assigned to the red team. Reduced AWACS, reduced ground support. The Gripens connected their link systems and acted themselves as AWACs, got the battlefield awareness necessary and avoided all ground defense, scored 10 kills the first day including a Typhoon No losses were recorded on day one they remained undetected. One Gripen pilot knocked down five F-16 Block 50+ during close air combat in Red Flag Alaska. And the Gripen never lost any aerial encounter or failed their mission objectives. It was the only fighter that performed all planned starts, while others were sitting on the ground waiting for the weather to clear up. during a combat exercise with the Royal Norwegian Air Force, 3 Swedish Gripens went up against 5 RNAF F-16's. The result was 5-0, 5-0, 5-1 after having flown 3 rounds And no disrespect to any other fighters, including Norwegian pilots because they're just as well trained 'During Loyal Arrow in Sweden, 3 F-15C's from the USAF were intercepted by a Gripen acting as an aggressor. The result was 2 F-15's shot down and one managed to escape due to better thrust/weight source for the above see link below www.globaldefensecorp.com/2021/01/07/gripen/ www.czdefence.com/article/the-gripen-e-is-comparable-to-the-f-35a-in-many-ways Or look at Professor Justin Bronk at RUSI, his particular areas of expertise is the modern combat air environment kzbin.info/www/bejne/p17PlKhooKeLh6s eurasiantimes.com/jas-39-fighters-precisely-designed-to-fight-russia-british/?amp The SAAB E model has further improved the technology so that the Russian S400 has a very difficult time seeing the Gripen E before it is too late now some of this technology is based on technology from the USA that SAAB has integrated with its technology SAAB has developed a completely unique software that means that in the middle of a flight mission, the Gripen can change its combat task, for example from hunting to ground attack Sweden has applied for nato membership and the video below covers Sweden's arms manufacturing which nato is happy to include in the deal if you just want to see what the Gripen has to offer then go to 9.06 kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5erhH2cgKh5iZY

@@hammertimetor5913 It's not so crazy at all, the first time it takes a lot of research and patent applications to protect the technology, as well as production methods. Once the product is presented, licences deals can be done to shorten development time, and once new tech is presented, it can be copied by those who doesn't care to deal with licences. Sweden is luckily one of the license agreement kind of countries, during WW2 we copied a (in neutral Sweden) crasched PW Twin Wasp engine and admitted that to Pratt & Whitney, they asked us to send a sample for testing, it produced a little bit more power than the original due to tighter tolerances, so the licence cost us less than $ 1. I regard this as an approval...😊 It was also a good start of the agreement to licence the PW JT8D engine for the SAAB 37 Viggen, we changed a few things to improve bird strike resistance due to a single engine configuration. For Gripen, we licenced the GE F-404, and for Gripen E, the GE-414 and then developed them to fit our purposes even more.

We must remember one thing. The plane does not exist and is far from finished, which is why everything that has been said and narrated here is a “wish list” of what one would like to achieve. No doubt that the Swedes are skilled, so are the British. However, let's see if the schedule is met - if so, it is close, if not the only time this has happened. The same with the costs. And as for the comparison with the F-35, one must remember that the F-35 exists - it flies today, this wonder plane does not. And the day it does, there is already a new one on the way that has even better data - the eternal race and technology development.
@tommyandersson41232 ай бұрын
@@badfaceday7509 Well, if you're asked to develop a new aircraft that is supposed to live for 40 yrs, and will be launched in 10 yrs, a good start would be to look at development rates, draw that trend out 35 yrs in the diagram, and then take aim to upgrade it every 10 yrs. That's how most new fighters are developed. So, the numbers and characteristics are not dimensioned for today, it's chosen for the supposed "tomorrow" some 35 yrs ahead. The F-35 is a fantastic machine that first flew 2006, went into service 2015. The Gripen first flew 1988, went into service 1996, so it is about to be replaced in, say 2035-2040. So, what we can see and read facts about in wikipedia will be obsolete then. Most specifications are secret until launch for a reason.

@tommyandersson412319 күн бұрын
@KittyCat-qg4vd Get cash out of India!? What do you mean? Sweden is for sure not sucking money from India, don't be rediculous! As far as I have understood the situation is, that SAAB may have answered that the first Gripen E can be delivered 36 months from any (eventual) agreement, if India wants to buy Gripens, in that case it will be that 4,5 gen aircraft you obviously dont think is good enough. Any new 6th gen Swedish sucessor definately cant be delivered in 36 months. However, since India flies Rafales, i'm far from sure that any deal is near, Rafale is a capable fighter on it's own, although more expensive to run due to dual engines configuration, so if India is looking for Gripens, it's for economic reasons. Swedish aircraft have not previously needed Stealth, which basically was missing to reach gen 5. We send aircraft up to identify and show presence to intruders of Swedish air and territorial water, stealth is not needed for that, we basically want to be seen on our missions, just not before we get there. Since entry into NATO, specifications may have changed to future defence strategies, i don't know exactly how. I'm sure it can be done, but having few inhabitants (10 mn) it may be a bit expensive. India is part of BRICS, but apparently NATO allowed for selling Gripens to BRICS country Brasil, that surprized me a bit, since Gripen has American engine. .

@@qkktech Planes don't go mach 7+ at combat speeds. Even fighters that are capable of mach 2 don't go those speeds during combat. Those are intercept speeds. They slow down for actual combat. For one thing, at mach 2 the amount of time you have to make decisions is decreased considerably. At mach 7, good luck. At mach 2, a plane is going 686 meters per second. At mach 7 it's 2401 meters per second. Additionally, you have no maneuverability at those speeds. The SR-71 was a mach 3+ spy plane. It needed a little over 100 miles to perform a 180 degree turn. Granted, it was limited by a 1.5g load. But at mach 7 you're going to rip the wings off and disintegrate the air frame if you try acrobatic maneuvers. Then there's fuel consumption. An F-15 can go 2200 kilometers at mach 1 on internal fuel. That drops considerably when going mach 2 or more. This is why they don't typically cruise even at mach 1.

Sweden pulled out of Project Tempest
@Martin-Squirrel2 ай бұрын
Tempest is United Kingdom, Japan and Italy - Global Combat Air Programme. In December 2023, a Swedish official during the International Fighter Conference announced that Sweden would not make a decision on a future fighter to replace the Gripen until 2031 following several national studies and related planning efforts. On Wikipedia, not sure its gonna be Sweden's next main fighter jet.. There is clearly cooperation efforts from Sweden into this project.. On 19 July 2019, Sweden signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UK to work together in developing the wider FCAS needed for the future of aerial operations.[10] on 11 September during DSEI 2019, Italy formally joined the Tempest programme.[11][12] In 2020, Sweden and the UK 'firmed up' their MoU for FCAS and saw Sweden's SAAB establish a centre-of-excellence in the UK as part of a £50 million investment, However it was stressed that this was not an indication that Sweden or SAAB had signed onto the main Tempest effort.[13] On the 21 December 2021, The UK, Italy, and Sweden signed a trilateral MoU for cooperation on the FCAS. that is: The Future Combat Air System (FCAS), (French: Système de combat aérien du futur; SCAF; German: Zukünftiges Luftkampfsystem; Spanish: Futuro Sistema Aéreo de Combate; FSAC) is a European combat system of systems under development by Dassault Aviation, Airbus and Indra Sistemas. The FCAS will consist of a Next-Generation Weapon System (NGWS) as well as other air assets in the future operational battlespace.[1][2] The NGWS's components will be remote carrier vehicles (swarming drones) as well as a New Generation Fighter (NGF)-a planned sixth-generation jet fighter[3][better source needed]-that will possibly supersede France's Rafale and Germany and Spain's Typhoons.[2][4] So it's a little bullshit but it's still not too far off :) I say its okej video. It more like clickbait :D I'm from Sweden so its interesting if its gonna be our next jet. Still we don't know?

@@Jonsson474 Yeah, you said it exactly correctly, but still managed to come up with a fault conclusion. The F -35 is the most effective plane available because not only of its stealth shape, but its' active EW suite, its many features to reduce IR signature, its Low Probality of intercept radar, etc. Dumbing it down: EW suite, good. EW suite + IR reduction design + internally carried weapons + LPI radar AND stealth shapes and coatings= better. There is a place for the Gripen, but was designed for intercepts and defensive roles. Countries that need to attack and suppression enemy air defenses would not ( and don't) choose the Gripen over the F-35. The extra capabilities come at a cost.

Major aerospace programs dependent on technology not in current commercial use are notorious for program time delays and budget growth. Regardless of the miraculous claims made to sell the program, Saab is smart to focus on E/W, sensor fusion, and avionics development. That allows them to build on the outstanding systems already created for the Grippen and are highly adaptable to other projects, leveraging the previous investments.

Yet, in spite of all the seemingly missed opportunities, there still seems to be progress that has been and continues to be made. For example: One of the most recent "shames" - in my book - happens to be the decision to go with the YF-22 instead of the YF-23 fighter. Thankfully, the Japanese seem to be picking up on that trail with their new fighter aircraft design. BUT there's so much happening - particularly here in the US - it's rather difficult to tell where the actual trail will lead. Sweden cannot afford to keep up incremental updates as USA (10 mn inhabitants compared to 320 mn), so we need to keep up with development between 'our' generations, to keep development costs down. It seems to work for us. Every 10 years or so, there is a major update, 39 Gripen E/F is the 2nd big update since it went into service 1996, almost 30 yrs ago. There may well be a 3rd upgrade before replacement.

@tommyandersson4123Ай бұрын
@@brianv1988Agreed, but most fighters are going in that direction today, rather than following a "generations list", we need to learn how to keep fighters relatively simple, cheap and easy to maintain, otherwise the future will be ridiculously expensive and sensitive to electric malfunctions. BVR is already a reality from a technical perspektive, but as we are not at war, it can only be tested in exercises. Often aircraft are valued after their results in the last war, Sweden being in peace for 215 yrs consecutive has nothing to offer then? Luckily it doesn't work that way, we participate in exercises like Red Flag even before entering Nato, and strategies, material, pilot education and ground crews may be compared. So, i'm not particularly worried about that. What worries me more is that we might overdo things , making our fighters overadvanced, instead of cheap and reliable to operate i a practical way. Todays fighters are already peace machines, far to sencitive for warfare, but to patrol our borders doesn't normally mean being shot at.

Priority given to maneuverability and low maintenance costs over stealth, but not ignoring the stealth totally and instead just keep down the reflections when it was feasible. Stealth is not always easy and coatings that have to be replenished often to maintain stealth can be a great headache and increase maintenance costs and maintenance time between flights. A fighter that's not in the air don't score any hits. But I'm not sure if everything that's presented in the video actually is real or will become real. In any case I suspect that the fighter jets we see today are the last of their line. In the future we'll see more drones of various types. Remote controlled with AI assistance. The war in Ukraine shows us this to some extent where drones have had a considerable impact.
