There's currently an unmanned version of the latest version, JAS-Gripen E (named UCAV) under development and supposed testing. If this is a project in a late phase, which I would not be surprised if it were, considering SAAB, Ericsson and BAE are the developers/stakeholders, it is quite groundbreaking. It could well be the first real unmanned fighter/attack jet.

If I'm not wrong I think that the 39 can make use and control unmanned UAV's as support from the C/D models and onwards. Useful for launching weapons on a high value target that is heavily defended. That way the fighter jet can use it sensors and radar at a safe range, combined with the UAV's stealth and small size to deliver the weapon of choise. Makes perfect sense. Instead of risking both man and machine while also compromising the aircraft design by making it "stealth".

secularnevrosis You're probably right, that's not SF there, much of it has already been tested. What's great is Gripen E/F is the first plane to be armed with the new Meteor Air to Air-missile, with a range of just over 100km. That's awesome, an maybe especially useful in the Baltic region...

The turn-around time of this bird on highway strips is ridiculously short, availability is good, flight hour is "cheap". Gripen 39E is an air-to-air murderer wih Meteor BVRAAM with it's EW suite and manouvreability.

Damn... SAAB an American Based Company that ventures in Sweden got a sole contract to build fighter jets from JAS-V to Gripen. After all, thanks to the American taxpayers who shared their technology to Sweden by giving them a full access of its engine from Pratt & Witney as well as General Electric FW-404JT, then later on SAAB an American based conglomerate a subsidiary company of FORD MOTORS had just integrate the P&W to GE engines to a new level, then made its own engine from then on and so forth. Thanks to the late US President Eisenhower in the cold war era that approved the US laws and bills to shared its secret and advanced weapons and technology to Sweden in order to match the late USSR now currently remains as Russian Federation. SAAB though a maker of VOLVO and a sister company of FORD MOTORS USA have focus more on aviation aside from volvo trucks and cars, since they have been the only company in Sweden that manufactures fighter jets and armaments.

Price is NOT a factor when talking about power and effectivness. All planes are bilt to last, not like plastic toys. I can assure you that the Gripen is an extreme threat to current Russian planes. The Gripen has a more modern targeting system and is much more agile than most of the Russian jets since it being almost 40% smaller than the Gripen. As for speed it is known that the Gripen can reach over mach 2 but as far for the real numbers it's secret.

Jas 39C crushed its opponents as a foe in Red Flag… the American Air Force had to change its tactics just to get one kill against the Swedish fighter, but there wasn’t any F22 at Red Flag!… Swedish pilots are also known for being very well trained and flying in all weathers!
