I'm an American who had the unforeseen privilege of living in Sweden between 1999-2002. These were the best years of my life and my youth. Jansson's Frestelse is my absolute favorite Swedish comfort dish (I tried several versions while there during Jul -- various friends' and families versions as well as commercial varieties like those ready to heat from Konsum, for example). This is a remarkably simple but delicious, highly satisfying soul-warming food. It's been so long, but I just made notes about ingredients to make this soon. Tack!

Thanks, Viktor for this amazing recipe. It was simply yummy. I have one tip regarding cutting the potatoes into pieces. If the potato is big then it's good to slice it twice horizontally so pieces comes in the way you have shown in the video else you get a semi-circular piece which needs to be cut into smaller pieces. Hope I was clear :-) Looking forward to trying more of your recipes.

Det ser jättefint ut! I'm making it right now as we speak, so this is really helpful. Reminds me of my time spent in Stockholm and Småland... making this dish adds a bit of nostalgia to the Christmas table for me. Greetings from an American in love with all things Swedish!

Unfortunately everybody forgot to take a picture. That everybody loved it including the guest... In fact husband said it was less fishier. But two cans of anchovies for the anchovies I found in my area was from Spain.

Very nice! We have made it several times and love it. It just occurred to me that it resembles the Icelandic plokkfiskur a bit. Potatoes, onions, milk and fish, except they use cod, but it is delicious too, just like Jansson's :) Nice to know this is a common dish in Sweden for Christmas!

Victor, I'm excited about your Christmas food series because this year we want to create a historical Swedish holiday buffet for our family (my wife and I are both > 1/2 Swedish diaspora. My 85-year-old mother got so excited to hear about Jansson's Temptation; she remembers fondly eating it Christmas Eve at her great-grandparents who were the original immigrants from Sweden. The same with my wife's great-grandparents! I believe it is essential for any family to keep these deep traditions, even when we live away - it gives our children a sense of connectedness that is quite often missing in American society these days.

Should've watched this before I made my last batch :) Made it for our American Thanksgiving holiday since my girlfriend wanted to try out a traditional Swedish dish. I think I made my potato cuts too large and my heat wasn't high enough. I didn't get that nice crispy top like you have in the video. I'll have to give it another go for Jul! Tack så mycket!

I really, REALLY love this stuff, and I make it a version almost identical to yours, except that I used Baltic Sea sprats instead of anchovies because in my (very outdated) Swedish/English dictionary, ansjovis=sprats and vice versa. But I love anchovies so next time I make this, I'll use them instead. Also, I just sliced potatoes instead of french-fry style potatoes. Either way, my mouth is watering just thinking about this dish! 😋

Ansjovis are sprats, not anchovies. "Abba ansjovis" is the product to buy 👍

Here in the US we have a Swedish-American Christmas sausage called Korv. From what I've been told, it doesn't exist in Sweden but I could be wrong about that. It's very tasty and I always look forward to having it.

Hi Freeaboo! Intresting maybe need to do some research on this! "Korv" means sausage in Swedish :)

It does exist, but it's called julkorv. Here is a recipe if you want to make some: Christmas sausage, about 2 kg sausage 3.3 pounds boneless pork loin 0.6 pounds of potatoes 2 cups of milk 3% 1.5 tbsp salt 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 16 ft pig casting Seasoning: 2 tablespoons yellow mustard seeds 1 tablespoon coarsely crushed allspice 2 teaspoons ground ginger Boil the potatoes soft. Peel and let cool. Boil the milk and let it cool. Cut the meat into smaller pieces. Grind meat and potatoes in a meat grinder. Mix with the milk. Season with salt and pepper. Mix the minced meat with mustard seeds, allspice and ginger. Rinse through the castings with cold water. Fill the scales with the batter. Tie it to the right size(about 5-8 inches long and 2 inches wide). Freeze the sausage or cook it immediately. Prick the sausage and simmer in lightly salted water with bay leaves and allspice for about 15 minutes.

Hello Viktor, thanks for this amazing recipe! I made it a couple of times and my friends loved it. I am wondering if there's an alternative to the anchovies though, because some of my friends don't eat seafood/are vegetarians so I want to find a proper replacement

Try to use capers :) we found it in a vegan Janssons recipe, and it tastes pretty close to the original
@jodileonforte3810

It's actually not anchovies in English. It's a "false cognate" between Swedish and English. The fish used are called "sprats" and come in a tin. Abba brand "ansjovis" is the product to look for. It's the pink tin everyone uses. And a little goes a long way. I ruined a beautiful janssons by following a recipe that called for three tins' worth. One would've been plenty. So yeah, it's not anchovies, they're sprats 👍
