Hi Robin - I really enjoyed this video. I guess I was doing Swedish death cleaning before I knew what to call it. My mother passed away in 2005 and it was so painful and such hard work to go through her many many many years of things. She never threw anything away. Not only was it hard work but it was heart wrenching to get rid of things that I know she treasured but that I did not want or have a place for. The worst part was her paperwork. I just loaded it all up and brought it to my house and it took me years to go through all of that and shred things up and dispose of them. I decided then that I would not do that to my girls. When I retired I started at the front door and I went to the right and I went through every closet in every drawer in my house. It took me about two months and then after that I did zone cleaning to make sure that stuff did not accumulate again. I have not been able to do any zone cleaning since last year because of my health but I’m ready to get back at it again. I’ve been feeling good I have started back to water aerobics and all my regular activities. I’m wearing a heart monitor right now for about a week then we’ll have some other heart test done. I will go to the doctor on Tuesday as we are still trying to work on getting my blood sugar down. So there’s still issues to address but all in all I’m feeling so much better and started back on some kind of regular life. Thank you so much for your prayers and your concern. I treasure you and your friendship. Love in Christ

Hi Donna! I am doing cartwheels over your good news! 🙌🙏🥳 I’m so glad that you are finally getting back to your activities and feeling better! My mom went through the same thing with both of my grandmothers and that definitely made me realize the importance of not accumulating so much and thinking about what I would leave behind for others to deal with. I am planning to do more on this topic because I think it’s so important. I’ll keep praying that you stay on this course of healing and getting back to all that you love doing! Praise God!!! 💛🤗💛

Donna - I have gone through the same experience with my parent's house. My parents lived in their home for 53 years, and "decluttering" wasn't in their vocabulary. My brother and I had to take time off work to go through the house, and even though we represent eight families/homes (we each have 3 married children), there was still so much left over! We held an estate sale and made over $13K with the "things no one wanted." I, too, do not want to do that to my children! I'm working through our home, asking my children now if they want things, and slowly getting to a more minimal home. I hope you are feeling better soon 🙏

@@FaithandFlour I'd like know if you have designated some of your sentimental things to your boys; I have four children; the girls have taken somethings that belonged to my mother because they asked for it when she passed; however I still have alot of furniture and dishes; What do you think you will do in the future?

I love the one in, one out rule. Before I retired, I managed a university laboratory, and the professor, Prof. S., was a major packrat. I gave him three rules: 1) If something new comes into the lab, something of equivalent size must leave. 2) If Prof. S. wanted to overrule this, the new item must stay in his office. 3) If Prof. S. visited the office of surplus properties (a warehouse on campus where unwanted or excess items were stored), where he loved to "shop," he must be accompanied by a responsible adult. One time he brought a hideous plastic fig tree into the lab to test me. I threw it in the garbage. He picked it out. Then I threw it into the dumpster outside. He climbed into the dumpster and retrieved it. Finally, I waited until he left town for a few days and buried it deep in the dumpster. Success! We had a lot of fun with the "rules", but I usually got my way in the end. I remember once the department head came into the lab and commented that it was the neatest lab on campus.

Sometimes I do the one in two out rule. So if I really want a new top am I willing to part with two I already have. That way I’m decreasing my wardrobe. Of course if you have a well curated wardrobe the one in one out works perfectly.🥰

You are my true motivation for decluttering clothing and shoes. I retired 3 1/2 years ago after working full time for 46 years. It is taking me a while to discover what I want and need to wear for my new lifestyle. Getting there! I have donated so many great clothes that I know I will never wear again. I am a big fan of the one in and one out method. I never buy more hangers ... if I run out then I know it's time to purge. I also told my daughter I will never leave her to empty out a whole house of stored items like I had to do for my parents and in-laws. Blessings Robin (your hair looks beautiful!)

I would love more on Swedish Death Cleaning. I take my clean clothes with the hangers hung backward. As I wear them, I turn the hangers around. This lets me know what I've worn, and at the end of a season, I can decide if I want to hold onto the items. I put on some weight since last fall/winter, so I'll need to take that into consideration. What are some of the labels you like best for everyday clothes.

I read this book some time ago, and it made good sense. Why leave 'stuff' for our children to go through after we've gone. It changed the way I bring things into my home. I am Swedish! We did have a lot to clean out from my parents. And my aunt who was single, no children, and she had many of my grandparents things. Thankfully there wasn't a lot of trash and junk. Most were sentimental things. Antiques from Sweden. But still alot of work. My daughter wants me to label all the Antiques, which side of the family they come from, age, the stories etc. She loves the family history. But I am not leaving a bunch of tubs of random things shoved in a storage room.

I certainly understand; I have things that belonged to both my great grandmother, grandmother and mother; my mom was very sentimental and did not use these items for fear of breaking them; my children on the other hand have said if they have never saw it used it invokes no memory thus it needs to go; I find this very stressful since these are items that may end up in Goodwill; most of this is things like copper pan used in the 1800s, very old glassware that is beautiful; I don't know I have probably a few more decades left maybe I will use them before they are trashed.

I still have a long way to go, so I'm thankful for your video to help me keep motivated! I have only so many hangers, and when they get used, I make myself declutter something to make room for the new piece for that hanger. I was so happy to see this video when I woke up this morning. I read this book about a year ago and of all the decluttering type books and articles, this one impressed me the most, because I am in my 70s now and have 2 daughters and a son who will be left with the task of working out what to do with all our belongings. I had never thought of our home and everything in it in that way before and reading this book was a lightbulb moment for me. However, I get overwhelmed with making all these decisions and haven’t really achieved much yet but as you’ve shown us this morning I can just start with my wardrobe and progress from there. Baby steps! I look forward to more of these videos Robin, and I like that you went through the items and explained why they no longer have a place in your wardrobe. Really enjoyed this one!🥰

A little add-on tip. During and even after the initial decluttering I adopted a 1 in and 3 out approach. Bare minimum, 1 in and 2 out. It really helped to move out pieces that I should have donated to start with and keep items under control. Even did this with other categories such as seasonal decor. With less choices life seems so much easier and so does cleaning!

Hi Robin, thanks for the motivation! I need to start my seasonal switch and clean out for fall/winter soon. I was saying "no!!!" when you pulled out that blue, white and gray cardigan. I always love when you wear it on camera in wintertime. It's very flattering on you! I have been Swedish death cleaning off and on for the last year or so. I'm down to a few boxes of sentimental items which are soooooo hard to tackle but I have a goal to complete it before the end of the year. 🤞My parents are 87 and their health is failing fast. My sister and I will be left with mountains of stuff to deal with. I don't want that to be the legacy I leave behind for our daughters. I've been gifting some items to grandchildren. I gave my granddaughter a birthday gift today and she was so excited about the little trinket box that I included. She's 5 and it's special to receive something breakable and "vintage" I guess! 🙂Thank you for another enjoyable video. Have a blessed week.

I read Swedish Death Cleaning a few years ago and afterwards asked my two adult sons what items in our home they would like to have when my husband and I are gone. The oldest said "nothing" and the other wanted a water colour painting that had sentimental value (so I gave it to him then and there). I was quite surprised as we have so many beautiful items that I was sure they'd want at least some of them. It's quite freeing to go through this process and come to the realization that you're often doing your kids a big favour by down-sizing and decluttering in a big way... before you get really old😊

My problem is I retired 8 years ago and I still have some of my work clothes. My lifestyle has changed dramatically so very rarely or never have the need to wear them but my problem is they are very good clothes that I loved at the time and have trouble getting rid of them. I know I should but I find it hard to pull the trigger.

Wonderful video. I just heard about Swedish Death Cleaning a few months ago. While deciding to downsize, as I have mentioned to you previously. This type of cleaning/decluttering will be vital for me to downsize! Thanks for the video and book recommendation!!!💯💯💯

Robin, that green top I love. The colour really suits you.😊 In the UK we can take our clean old clothes to the charity shop, even holey socks. I just put a note in saying only suitable for recycling, the charity then gets so much money per kilo. Great video, I love a good declutter 😊

I'm not a shopper and survive on donations from others (so hand me that donation bag).(It's interesting because I grew up poor and you'd think I'd hate hand me downs but they warm my heart) The problem is that I take everthing. I recently went through and decluttered and it's amazing.(There is one really nice store I do go into... mostly designer clothing, and purchase stuff on sale. I've actually sold some of that.

Great video. I need to see more of this for inspiration. Thank you for sharing. I wish I could maintain a constant weight. My weight is up and down. I got rid of all my 14-16 sizes 3 years ago. Got down to a 6-8 and now I’m back to a 14-16. Starting over and hoping I can find something sustainable at 77 years of age.

Thank you Gale! I think many women can relate. You did it before and so I’m confident you can do it again. It really helps me to have a partner to keep me accountable and to encourage me. Don’t be too hard on yourself. I also want to say that you deserve a wardrobe that fits you well the size you are now. So find a few pieces that you feel good wearing and maybe hold onto some of your favorites (6-8) that you can look forward to wearing again soon. I’m here to cheer you on! 💛😊💛

Love this video - just subscribed! I am looking forward to your 10 item fall wardrobe video - would love to hear your thought process of how you select your items and how long you keep items around if you know you aren't going to be using them for their season. Also, do you have loungewear that you wear on a day to day basis? Or do you wear these clothes every day? I have gotten where I don't dress up other than loungewear/workout wear/shorts and t-shirts and am considering packing those items away so that I take more care into my looks for my own mental health - but, I'm also very aware that the suggestion may not be the reality on a day-to-day basis. Thank you!

Since retiring my wardrobe has really changed. I was never a fashion oriented person so clothes do not have a strong appeal. My weakness are kitchen items and toys for our grandson. I try to by second hand toys. We were left so many items by my in - laws. Would like to pitch some more things. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for this video, great approach to decluttering! I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on why you would be donating each piece. I’m curious, is there a specific reason to donate the two Lands’ End dresses? I’ve been thinking of buying that style for several years and just haven’t done it yet.

I easily purge things that don't fit or aren't being used. I am minimalist in everything except books. I read many different kinds of genres and reference books are useful. I got Mary's Nest new cookbook recently. I also got a book about cakes that does something different that others. She mixes all the dry ingredients together and the wet ingredients separately. Then coats the dry mix with room temperature butter. Then adds the wet ingredients in three amounts. Says there is less chance of over mixing that way.

Books are honestly the easiest thing to rid your home of so it's interesting as a minimalist that is still something you struggle with!! Everything can be read literally on your phone even!! Especially recipes . Look up and done . Try it. Have a yard sale and get some more money if you even find someone who wants books . Even in schools books are extinct . Everything is done on chrome book no school books . Library is no longer books downloaded . Good news for our trees

@@Rollimggiant Not necessarily. I used to be able to find some things online but are no longer online. I found a bra measuring guide online once for those above a D cup and fortunately, I printed it out because it is no longer there. Another case is I found an article on the Fine Cooking website but it is no longer up fortunately, I memorized that part since I cook rice every day. I used to follow bloggers who were around my bust size. I cannot find their old articles because they no longer have active websites. New allergies to some synthetic fabrics I have to find mostly natural fiber ones myself. Fortunately found 3 brands that fit my larger-than-average size. Before I could only get bras from the UK and Poland since I'm a 34GG in the UK and 85F in Polish. The internet or power goes off sometimes so it's good to have things I can do that require neither.
