This is actually a bad example. Call me crazy but I want a nuclear power plant located near my residence to be well regulated maybe even a little over-regulated. I would much rather even pay a little bit more for nuclear power if it really reduced the chance of the meltdown. This isn't a fox minding the hen house. This is a hen run anti Fox missile system. The problem in these cases is where you have someone with a conflict of interest. Not when you ask someone with a great interest in regulating a Industry regulating that industry. The idea of too much nuclear power plant safety is a little ridiculous given what can happen at places like Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Even including chernobyl and Fukushima and all other major nuclear disasters, nuclear energy has caused several times less harm to human life and the environment than any other form of energy generation. And modern plants are around 1000x safer than those two reactors. The chance of a nuclear disaster on a similar scale in modern plants is around 1 in 100 000 000 because of the massive strides in both active and passive failsafes leading from those disasters. It is a far bigger issue for the nuclear energy industry to be overregulated. As over regulated industry is less economically viable, meaning it doesn't become as wide spread. Nuclear energy is currently the only environmentally friendly energy source capable of competing with the oil/coal industry, and it also happens to be the most environmentally friendly energy source today with the exception of wind power and maybe geothermal. Over regulating nuclear energy is an irresponsible decision when keeping climate change in mind. Putting someone who doesn't understand how critical nuclear energy is to our future in charge of regulating nuclear energy is an incredibly bad idea. Putting someone in charge who actively denies it's importance and completely ignores its statistical advantages is even worse. It's like hiring an oil tycoon to regulate wind power. Except the tycoon would probably be more competent.
