Alex strikes me as a "warrior in a garden" like he was probably an elite soldier whose bagged several world despots and and has a body count that'd make a Kardashian blush. But he's found mini painting as a way to keep the demons at bay. He might just be the world's deadliest mini painter.

I remember my first @52miniatures video ever... it was about using pigments on some dwarf cannon operators in order to get them to "blend" with the base... i started doing that on all my bases as i a started painting. Thank you Alex, you are an inspiration in my hobby travel!

Love Alex's channel. First time I watched a video there, I knew it was different. The quality was that of a professional, and the story telling made it seem like an episode, like we were invited into a moment in this life. He is easily tops when it comes to video quality in the miniature painting KZbin community. I love when he does different things, like when there was the community library, or the Idols of Torment diorama, or the Space Marine visiting The Shire.

I started watching Alex because Miniac did a video about his favorite channels and featured 52 Miniatures there. I think his unique style, both painting and making the actual videos, are the best part of his channel. Apart from awesome content (which a lot of people deliver), him and Miniac are in a different level qualitywise. There are no other channels that have all the aspects of the hobby so well represented (painting, storytelling, video production, variety...).

Great episode! Alex makes the impression of being a fantastic dude based on what I've seen of his own channel. Really interesting takes on making youtube content as well

Here’s why I think there are so many details in models now….the average painter likes to dry brush to make the model better on top of their base coat or slap chop. Lots of details are better for the dry brushing strokes so that the dry brushing adds more to the paint job by hitting more ridges and adding more paint and making it pop more with those edge highlights

On fixing lawn mowers, last year I bought a new lawn mower and the safeties were just making it terrible to use, so I pulled open the safeties and bypassed one, and it's worked like a charm ever since. I didn't exactly know what I was doing, but knew enough

I agree with liking "learning process videos". It's arguably more useful to know how a person arrived at their process as it is to know what their process is.

Smelling salts may still be used by doctors. Several years back I almost passed out after getting blood drawn for standard labs, me and needles have never played well together, and the nurse brought out the salts to perk me back up. It was a bit of a trip to use something I'd only ever read or heard about in various stories.

48:00 What I have discovered in the last year is that by choosing a color scheme for the most involved model first - preferably a 4 color scheme - I get to test the color scheme out, but then on every other unit, I only use 3 of the 4 colors, so everything ties in, but I can vary values on top of the partial color coordination so no single unit feels out of place while also providing the opportunity to play a little with the scheme.

In regards to the 'eavy metal style, when I was painting my Escher gang (which is only 10 models) I noticed the minis on the box art were most probably painted by 2 different people as 5 had NMM type elements whereas the other 5 had TMM elements, so if even 10 minis would take way to long for a single artist to do within a reasonable amount of time that is a definite indication that trying to paint to that standard in a reasonable amount ourselves is just setting the bar way too high. I still tried to make mine look as good as I could but I didn't sweat over shizzle that can only be seen under magnification cause well, who gives a funk about things no one will ever really see with the naked eye... and I wouldn't want to be so protective of the paint jobs that I never play with them.

As a normal hobbyist painting without a deadline I hate detail on detail on detail. Bonus hate points if the detail is muddy or unclear so I don't even know what the sculptor was trying to sculpt, bonus bonus hate points if it's obvious the sculptor *also* didn't know what they were trying to sculpt beyond "detail" Conquest minis, especially the Nords, are terrible for this. Lots of detail does well with washes and drybrushing, edge highlighting and contrast. People get scared and confused trying to place an edge highlight on a smoothly rounded surface.

“Biggest Mall in the World”? - Fellas… let me tell you about a little backwater country (by western ‘standards’) called Thailand that has malls that have been blowing America out of the water for DECADES… One has a full water park on top, another has a zoo… it’s just crazy. I mean, choose your pick of ANY mall in Southeast Asia…
